(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Postdoc on Security Cooperation and Crisis Governance in International and Transatlantic Relations
The CDB project is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). It addresses the ongoing acceleration of overlapping systemic crises and security threats in international governance and security cooperation through a set of interdisciplinary case studies that explore how international crises interact with local, national, and regional processes.
The current sense of polycrisis is exacerbated by intense criticisms of the actors, institutions, and practices of governance and cooperation. Divisive politics and discourses call for an interrogation of societal, sectoral, and epistemological approaches to security cooperation and crisis governance. Our project consortium thus brings into dialogue multiple interdisciplinary research agendas with the aim to advance a critical and deeper understanding of such crucial contemporary developments and their historical roots.
The assumption is that the combined effects of rapidly developing polycrises substantially weaken any baseline consensus on the nature and causes of common threats and further fragment demands for security. Our challenge is therefore to better identify these causes and demands through cross-disciplinary collaboration to match this complexity and interconnectedness with relevant insights from varied disciplines and research programmes.
Deadline : 15 February 2025

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc van der Waals heterostructures
Are you a highly motivated, ambitious Postdoc candidate interested in pursuing cutting-edge experimental research in the area of quantum transport in van der Waals heterostructures? Are you interested in asking challenging fundamental questions in the area of emerging quantum states driven by proximity effect?
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher at Dr. Semonti Bhattacharyya’s vibrant research group (QWaals) (https://www.semonti-bhattacharyya.com/) in Leiden Institute of Physics (LION).
Van der Waals stacking is a unique route to create a defect-free, smooth interface between two materials with completely different properties. Hence, these types of assemblies are ideal fertile ground to study mechanisms of proximity effect and interaction of different quantum phases without the presence of significant amount of disorder. However, understanding and harnessing of such proximity effects and interaction are at a nascent stage. The PhD research topic involves (i) experimental detection and (ii) manipulation of new emergent quantum phases in such hybrid heterostructures as a function of twist angle and pressure. Experimental techniques will involve van der Waals stacking, nanofabrication, and low-temperature magnetotransport measurements.
Deadline : 5 February 2025
About Leiden University, Netherlands –Official Website
Leiden University (abbreviated as LEI; Dutch: Universiteit Leiden) is a public research university in Leiden, Netherlands. It was founded as a Protestant university in 1575 by William, Prince of Orange as the first university in the Netherlands.
During the Dutch Golden Age scholars from around Europe were attracted to the Dutch Republic for its climate of intellectual tolerance. Individuals such as René Descartes, Rembrandt, Christiaan Huygens, Hugo Grotius, Benedictus Spinoza, and later Baron d’Holbach were active in Leiden and environs.
The university has seven academic faculties and over fifty subject departments, housing more than forty national and international research institutes. Its historical primary campus consists of several buildings spread over Leiden, while a second campus located in The Hague houses a liberal arts college (Leiden University College The Hague) and several of its faculties. It is a member of the Coimbra Group, the Europaeum, and a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
The university has produced twenty-six Spinoza Prize Laureates and sixteen Nobel Laureates. Members of the Dutch royal family such as Queen Juliana, Queen Beatrix, and King Willem-Alexander are alumni, and ten prime ministers of the Netherlands including Mark Rutte.
