(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Understanding the role of alloying additions in the development of high-performance strain-induced precipitation hardenable AA6xxx series aluminium alloys

This project is sponsored by Constellium, a global leading manufacturer of high-quality technically advanced aluminium products and systems. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work alongside our industrial partners and contribute to Constellium’s strategic R&D aims. This includes a 3-month work placement within Constellium’s international business.

The project aim is to establish a greater understanding of the impact of alloying additions (e.g. Cu, Sn, In etc.) on the natural ageing retardation and precipitation kinetics of AA6xxx Al-alloys and, also, to understand, step-by-step the entire thermomechanical processing through advanced high – resolution TEM investigations.

The student will receive training in the use of the facilities available in the new developed Microstructural Characterisation Centre (MCC) at BCAST. The new centre includes state-of-the-art TEMs, SEMs and a metallurgy laboratory for TEM/SEM samples preparation.

Deadline : 11/04/2025

PhD position summary/title: 1Nanoscale chemical characterisation of high strength Al-6XXX produced with recycled aluminium

The use of recycled aluminium is important for reducing CO2 emissions and moving towards a circular economy. It also presents challenges and opportunities arising from the distribution of elements contained in the recycled aluminium which are not usual found in primary aluminium, such as Pb, Fe and Zn.

The successful applicant will receive expert training and utilise the newly installed state-of-the-art characterisation facilities at BCAST, including Atom Probe Tomography (APT) and Transmission Electron microscopy (TEM).

With these techniques, the project aims to reveal the 3D nano-scale chemical distribution of elements included in the alloy due to the recycling process. This will include characterising the secondary phases particles in the alloy and in particular, interfaces between these phases and the matrix, to observe the segregation behaviour and impact of trace elements.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Technologies for decarbonisation of industrial cooking of food while maintaining quality characteristics – BBSRC CASE STUDENTSHIP

Food processing relies heavily on the combustion of natural gas to provide process and space heating. To meet decarbonisation targets over the next 10 to 15 years, the use of gas has to be replaced by alternative zero-emission energy vectors.

This exciting and innovative project will make contributions to this by exploring a range of emerging electrified technologies, energy recovery technology and alternative gas-burning fuels such as green hydrogen.

The main impacts of the project will be:

  1. Improvement of the processing efficiency and control of the characteristics of products cooked in electrified, recovered heat and hydrogen cooking equipment.
  2. Decarbonisation of cooking processes.
  3. Contribution to the development of new food manufacturing technologies which should lead to increased employment opportunities in the manufacturing sector.

PhD position summary/title: EPSRC DLA Studentship in the Interaction between AI Technology Innovation and AI Regulation in the Healthcare Sector

AI as a Medical Device regulation must keep up with technical innovation. There are already many questions that need to be answered about existing AI approaches including:

  • How updating models impacts regulatory approval
  • What are the requirements for trustworthy explanation in medical decision-making by AI
  • How can confidence in decisions be reliably reported

This project aims to tackle these issues through a combination of empirical computational analyses, along with human / AI interaction methods.

It was founded in 1966 and named after Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the Victorian engineer and pioneer of the Industrial Revolution. In June 1966, Brunel College of Advanced Technology was awarded a royal charter and became Brunel University; in 2014 the university formally adopted the name Brunel University London (BUL). The university is considered a British plate glass university.

Brunel is organised into three colleges, a structure adopted in August 2014. Brunel’s three constituent Academic Colleges include the College of Business, Arts and Social Sciences; the College of Engineering, Design and Physical Sciences; and the College of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences.

Brunel has over 16,150 students and 2,500 staff, and an annual income of £271.3 million (2021–22), of which £22.4 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of £311.9 million.
