PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Information Systems in data-driven decision-making
In the MARTINA project, we intend to build on the conditions for green and digital transformation locally in the Arctic to support the development of human-centered AI innovations. This project will contribute to Industry 5.0 and society’s green and digital transformation. This will be particularly important in the green transition based on Industry 5.0, where humans work side-by-side with AI systems, thereby enhancing human capabilities by, for example, predicting events, automating routine tasks, adapting to individual needs, streamlining tasks, and supporting decision-making. AI design is different from traditional design processes as the systems are adaptive, predictive and able to learn. One consequence of AI is that humans have difficulty understanding its results, meaning over time, and the basis for decisions (so-called black box). This requires new approaches that do not exist today. The project is conducted in collaboration with other researchers at LTU and actors in the region and nationally.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Entrepreneurship and Innovation
We are recruiting a PhD candidate who will conduct research related to our research track focusing on business model innovation, circular economy, and sustainable industry. This project aims to understand how to design and develop circular business models with an industrial ecosystem of partnerships to drive the green transition. Therefore, this project takes an innovation ecosystem perspective to analyze business models and their economic, social, and environmental value. A significant part of the research is focused on addressing business needs by mapping out challenges, proposing methods for improvement, and facilitating the implementation of the proposed methods. Examples of potential research questions are: a) How can cooperation between ecosystem actors facilitate the development of circular business models? b) How to analyze and evaluate the effects of the implementation of circular business models? c) How can digital technologies be used to drive the implementation of circular business models? Thus, the project will have a close collaboration with various organizations (such as ABB, Boliden, Stena Recycling) and drive their growth and development.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student in Machine Elements
LTU, ABB, Boliden, SCA, and Stena Recycling are part of the project consortium. The project is also part of LTU’s strategic investment in the circular economy – Creaternity, www.ltu.se/Creaternity. The PhD student will participate in Creaternity’s research school and thus gain access to its courses and network.
The project is about the circular economy of industrial electric motors. As much as 45% of the world’s energy use comes from the industry’s 300 million electric motors. Continued electrification means that the number will double by 2040. 80% of today’s electric motors have a low energy class, and a shift to a higher class would reduce energy use by 10%. With legislation and increasing energy costs, engines will therefore be replaced, in parallel with electrification, which means that new production can more than double. Recycling the electric motor’s material for new manufacturing is complicated and expensive. Therefore, real circularity is required via optimized materials adapted for recycling, new engine design, and utilization of existing machines as spare parts. We will investigate how material selection for electric machines can be optimized, how engine design should be done for optimized operation, how service and recycling can be optimized, how spare engine stocks can be coordinated to reduce material consumption and investigate how such a business becomes economically as well as climate- and environmentally sustainable.
