Crisis makes democratic societies particularly vulnerable. In the face of a global disaster like COVID-19 and the looming climate crises, for example, the focus tends to shift from political questions, to prioritising scientific rationality. Scientific knowledge and expertise often get the upper hand in decision making and in political and public debate, while such knowledge is often highly complex and uncertain and it might take equally urgent political and societal questions out of view. While for many, these tendencies seem self-evident, there is strong reason to belief that repercussions for democracy can be serious.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Modelling the energetics of muscle contraction

You will work in the department of human movement sciences and will collaborate with several PhD students, postdocs and staff members within the department, from both the biomechanics group and the physiology group. You will be working on a combination of modelling and experimentation, and your project will inform and strengthen other projects, and vice versa. During your PhD you will combine an experimental approach – measuring both biomechanical and physiological measures obtained by a wide array of methodologies – with a modelling approach in which you will do forward dynamics simulations and/or optimal control to model human muscles and movements. Your studies should result in scientific publications, and will be presented at international conferences. In addition, there will be the opportunity to gain educational experience (optional) and take courses for professional and personal development. At the end of this four-year program you will write your research findings in a PhD thesis and defend it. The project will be supervised by Dr. Koen Lemaire, Dr. Ritchie Goulding and Prof. dr.  Jaap van Dieen. Other collaborators include Dr. Dinant Kistemaker and Dr. Maarten Afschrift.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate for the project ‘Navigating strategic paradoxes’

The Management & Organization department at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam invites applications for a PhD position with a research interest in strategic management and organization theory. we are looking for phd candidates to join our project on navigating strategic paradoxes.

Firms and their leaders increasingly face competing demands in their work. They need to exploit an existing business model, while exploring innovations; perform according to their shareholders financial goals, while meeting the social expectations of stakeholders; maintain a stable leadership, while being flexible in responding to sudden changes. Past research has suggested that leaders and organizations need to pursue one of these two sides. Increasingly, there is a new view in strategy that successful organizations need to pursue both demands simultaneously, seeking to leverage their synergistic potential. This view has been established as paradox theory – where two competing objectives can be understood as fundamentally interdependet. Business and academic stakeholders draw on paradox increasingly. However, until today, we lack the tools to implement, track, and evaluate the management of paradoxes.

PhD position summary/title: PhD – Metal-Free Perovskites for Energy-efficient Multifunctional Devices

The global energy demand is rising, requiring an urgent acceleration of the energy transition. Ongoing efforts focus on enhancing solar cell efficiency and developing energy-efficient technologies. Piezo-phototronics, an emerging physics concept, combines semiconductor, piezoelectric, and photoactivated properties.[1] In a piezo-phototronic device, the electrical and optical properties can be manipulated through mechanical strain,[2–4] with the potential of improving energy-related device performance. Conventional piezoelectric semiconductors often require high-temperature processes and incorporate environmentally harmful components, encouraging exploration of environmentally friendly alternatives. Metal-free perovskites, an underexplored class of materials, show promise in piezo-phototronic applications.

In this project, metal-free perovskite semiconductors will be designed and developed through compositional engineering using solution processing methods and mechanochemistry. The primary objective of this research project is to advance the fundamental understanding of how to design and fabricate metal-free perovskites with desired optical, electrical, and mechanical properties. This research has the potential to transform the landscape of semiconductors and energy transition technologies, and furthermore explores innovative applications such as single-material multi-sensors and energy harvesters. Moreover, the candidate will have the opportunity to deepen the understanding of the relationship between structure and properties in these materials, employing a combination of experimental techniques, including those reliant on synchrotron radiation such as high pressure and low temperature X-ray diffraction

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
