(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Post Doctoral researcher in algorithmic game theory for uncertain systems

Many real-life problems can be described by a collection of interacting agents making decisions in an uncertain environment, formally, by an uncertain multi-agent system. As an example, consider the energy grid, where companies and prosumers (who produce and consume energy at the same time) try to handle the uncertainty coming from renewable sources and demand imbalances. How can the agents take into account this unpredictability to optimize their decision-making process? What happens if very few information on the uncertainty is available? How can optimization and game theory help?

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: PostDoc: Reading the mind’s eye

Despite extensive research, we still do not have a comprehensive computational understanding of the mechanisms of the mind’s eye: How do we create mental images? And why are some people better at it than others? How do the various brain regions involved in mental imagery contribute to the unified percept in our mind’s eye? Why do we experience imagery so differently ranging from no to extremely vivid mental images?

In the Advanced ERC project “Reading the mind’s eye – AI-inspired personalised brain models of mental imagery” of Prof. Rainer Goebel, a novel perspective on mental imagery is proposed, viewing it as a personalised computational process that takes into account individual brain characteristics. The task of this computational process is to progressively transform abstract object descriptions (semantic input) into visual representations (sensory-like output) through feedback connections in the brain’s processing hierarchy.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc EMBRACE

Atrial arrhythmias are the most prevalent cardiac arrhythmia and are expected to become even more common in the future. Unfortunately, atrial arrhythmias are often not recognized in a timely manner, resulting in severely diseased atria. This makes effective treatment increasingly difficult, both for atrial arrhythmiasitself and for underlying risk factors and heart diseases. The future challenge is to detect atrial arrhythmias at an early stage to prevent progression towards diseased atria. To achieve this, novel mechanistic insights are crucial.
The postdoctoral researcher will take the lead in a research project that is part of a Dutch national consortium called EMBRACE, funded by the Dutch Heart Foundation. The EMBRACE network aims to elucidate the diversity of mechanisms underlying arrhythmogenic atrial diseases, to develop simple diagnostic tools to identify them, and to develop a therapeutic approach to prevent the pathological progression of atrial diseases and thus the occurrence of arrhythmias. The research project will involve using stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes and engineered tissue to establish a genotype-phenotype relationship between newly discovered genes associated with atrial arrhythmias and the progression of atrial disease.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-doc candidate in Group Modeling and Explainable Group Recommender Systems

The candidate will be involved in the Explainable AI research group, within the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences (DACS) at Maastricht University, working together with students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and other senior researchers. The candidate will conduct research on group modeling and group recommender systems. More specifically, the activity will involve a series of user studies, focused on identifying factors playing a role in the group decision-making process. Investigating the impact of individual personality, type of relationships, and similar characteristics, the candidate will derive models of interactions to be used in decision-support systems targeted to groups of people. On parallel, the candidate will conduct research on explainability for group recommender systems. The final goal is to provide basis for the design of transparent AI tools that support groups in taking shared decisions.
