PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Microwave Engineering for Next-Generation Cellular Wireless

Cellular industry has been devoting significant efforts to enhance the fifth-generation (5G) cellular, aiming at 5G-advanced and sixth-generation (6G). One of the most distinguishing features of these next generation radios is improved service coverage AND higher data rates. However, coverage and data rate are actually trade-off metrics since the radio systems that try to offer abundant bandwidth for increasing data rates are also more prone to losses in signal power transmission over-the-air; this is the first technical challenge that we address during the doctoral study. The trade-off is pronounced for indoor users, particularly for those in low- and zero-energy buildings because the highly insulated air-tight building structures typically also block radio waves very effectively. Another distinguishing feature of the next generation cellular is the ability of privacy-respected sensing of surrounding environments and localization of targets by “re-using” the ambient radio communications signals. Environmental sensing and target localization of indoor users, aiming at efficient use of the energy and space and improved safety and security in the building, is typically realized by various types of cameras, but relying on optical cameras is associated with the risk of privacy violation; this is the second technical challenge to be tackled in the present doctoral thesis opportunity. The mentioned two challenges are addressed by developing indoor building elements that allow improved radio coverage for indoor users, as well as environmental sensing and target localization of indoor users. By installing many low-power indoor radio heads, connected to a base station, the proximity of the user to at least one of them ensures good signal coverage. Radio waves reach users with a smaller number of interactions with building structures, leading to smaller losses compared to the case of communicating with outdoor base stations. Furthermore, radio-based sensing and localization is inherently incapable of sensing privacy-related information of people, e.g., their physical appearance. Antenna-embedded building elements such as walls, windows, window or door frames, are therefore an attractive solution to achieve BOTH indoor radio coverage AND privacy-respecting sensing of environment and localization of targets.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher positions in Business, Economics and Finance

Aalto University Doctoral Program in Business, Economics and Finance invites applications for Doctoral Researcher positions for students who started their doctoral studies in the School of Business program in 2022 and 2023. In cases of officially protected leaves of absence, such as parental leave, Finnish military service or long-term sick leave, students who have started earlier can be eligible, too.

This year, Aalto University School of Business will offer up to eighteen 50% employment contracts to students who demonstrate outstanding progress and excellence in their studies.

The expectation is that the successful candidates will work full-time on their doctoral dissertations and will independently apply for additional funding from external sources. During the employment contract, however, the successful candidate may raise no more than 15.000€/year in external grant funding (in addition, candidate may apply for different travel grants) or have no higher than 50 % employment contract elsewhere. Please note, that the employment contract should support the doctoral dissertation work.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Hygrothermal Building Physics for Resilient Renovations

Climate change is introducing unprecedented challenges to the built environment. In the Nordics, warmer summers and frequent heatwaves present new risks of overheating in buildings that were not designed for these conditions. Additionally, extreme rainfall and changing humidity levels may accelerate the degradation of facades in existing structures. To ensure a sustainable future, our buildings must be resilient, healthy, comfortable, sustainable, and energy-efficient. Addressing these complex challenges requires an interdisciplinary approach and systemic solutions.

This PhD research project at the Department of Civil Engineering will examine how hygrothermal building physics can inform material-based renovation strategies to address these demands. This work might involve a collaboration with TalTech in Estonia, and other foreign institutions. Research activities may include experimental testing on building materials, on-site measurements in existing buildings, and numerical simulations. The role may also involve supporting Master’s thesis students in their research and contributing to funding proposals.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher in Multi-level optimization of industrial processes

Are you interested in modeling large and complex systems and want to understand how, for instance, processing plant and supply chain levels can interact and be coordinated in an optimal way? Have you already made your first experiences with machine learning? If you are a creative and analytical person and like mathematical modeling and programming this might be something for you!

We are looking for a doctoral researcher (“PhD student”) to work on the interesting field of integrating different decision levels of processes. Decision levels are here mainly focused on planning and scheduling of production and associated supply chains. Supply chains can relate to raw-materials, waste, product delivery, energy supply and also include elements of sustainability and circularity. In this work, the concepts of chemical engineering, operations research and computer science will meet as you may also need to deploy machine learning to support data analytics and complex decision making processes.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral researcher in nonlinear systems and control

The Nonlinear Systems and Control group (https://www.aalto.fi/en/department-of-electrical-engineering-and-automation/nonlinear-systems-and-control) at Aalto University explores synergies between nonlinear control theory and physics informed machine learning to provide formal guarantees on performance, safety, and robustness of robotic and learning-enabled systems. The research group is seeking a talented PhD student with strong interest in nonlinear stability theory, modeling & identification, optimal control, certifiably safe & robust control, and learning for dynamics & control.

The main task of the PhD student will be to develop sound data-driven methodologies for learning control policies with provable guarantees on performance and safety, for example, through the efficient computation of Lyapunov and barrier functions, forward and backward reachable sets, optimal value functions etc. The broad goal is to build upon recent developments in learning Operator Theoretic representations of dynamical systems that focus on model interpretability, scalability to high dimensions, and data efficiency. The exact direction of the research is chosen depending on your experience and interests. Please relate clearly to some of the research topics in your Letter of Motivation.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website

Aalto University  is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.

The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.

Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.

The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
