PhD position summary/title: PhD Student position in the field of thin-film solar cells

We are looking for a student motivated to contribute to the development of thin-film CIGS photovoltaic devices. The researcher in this position is responsible for the fabrication and characterization of solar cells and layers based on the CIGS material system. The researcher goals are to understand and overcome limitations of devices based on new alloyed CIGS absorbers with high bandgap, explore the absorber processing limits and develop electrical contacts, in view of new applications such as bifacial and semi-transparent solar cells for tandem applications.

We are looking fora highly motivated candidate with a strong experimental background in solid state physics, surface science, optics, or quantum nanoscience who wants to pursue cutting-edge research at a world-class level. In this project, you will study atomic quantum emitters in 2D materials with a new type of scanning probe microscope (SPM) that allows for simultaneous atomic spatial and sub-picosecond time resolution – a new research frontier in quantum nanoscience.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in the field of cementitious construction materials

The topic of the two 4 years PhD projects is the study of hydration mechanisms and properties of low-CO2 cements based on magnesium hydroxycarbonates (further details at https://www.empa.ch/web/s604/zementforschung-grant). The main objectives of PhD A include exploring the hydration mechanism by experiments and thermodynamic modelling, studying mechanical properties, volume changes and durability for a range of mortar and concrete mixtures based on these binders. PhD B will focus on the effect of the use of different industrial by-products on the hydration mechanism and mechanical properties.
 
We are looking for two creative and innovative persons, with a Master degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Earth Sciences, Civil Engineering or related fields. You have experiences with X-ray diffraction analysis, thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy, vibrational spectroscopy, analysis of aqueous solutions and the knowledge of cement hydration as well as a strong background in materials science and good skills in design and operation of experimental setups are an advantage. In addition, you have very good verbal and written knowledge of the English language.
