PhD position summary/title: PhD Doing diversity: street-level decisions in superdiverse neighbourhoods
New levels of migration and mobility have changed the face of European cities, such as Bilbao. This had led to changing ‘superdiverse’ social realities, especially in ‘majority-minority’ neighbourhoods. The novelty of this emerging situation creates challenging circumstances particularly for ‘street-level workers’ such as teachers, police officers and healthcare professionals. This demands renewed understanding of the decision-making process of street-level workers.
This PhD project ‘ICONIC’ (‘International Comparative research Of street-level decisions in superdiverse Neighbourhoods In Context’) funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO Vidi grant) and led by dr. Mark van Ostaijen, will comparatively study street-level decisions in superdiverse neighbourhoods and investigate whether and why these decisions differ between Bilbao, Marseille, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Malmö, and Aarhus.
For this 4-year PhD project you will be based in Rotterdam, but for the fieldwork phase strong collaboration is ensured with the University of Deusto to conduct qualitative fieldwork in Bilbao and Marseille. As such, this PhD project does not require additional funding, nor extra means to conduct fieldwork, which is all covered by project funding.

PhD position summary/title: Fully-funded PhD position in AI, Law and Public Power (4.5 years)
Are you curious about how artificial intelligence is changing state actor powers? Do you want to conduct critical and in-depth legal research at the intersection of technology, law and power? And would you like to combine that with academic teaching?
Then this PhD position at Erasmus School of Law is for you. Within the Law & Markets team, you will spend 4.5 years researching the legal regulation of AI in the public sector. How do we protect fundamental rights when algorithms help decide on who receives public benefits, how to perform enforcement or how to enact environmental policy? What is the role of the state, and where is the limit of government power in a data-driven society?
You will have plenty of space to choose your own research angle and work in a multidisciplinary team with a focus on social impact. At the same time, you will teach (20%) academically. Your teaching activities will take place within the programmes and courses of the Law & Markets Department. The particular teaching tasks will be decided on the basis of the expertise of the candidate as well as the needs of the Department, but will focus on courses of public law both in the bachelor and master’s programs and possibly the Master Law & Technology.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position Cultural work and activism
The Erasmus School of History, Culture, and Communication (ESHCC) at Erasmus University Rotterdam is excited to offer a challenging and innovative PhD position in the Culture and Creative Industries, with a specific focus on Cultural work and activism at a time of political and ecological crises.
The PhD project will be part of a wider research agenda on activism and creative work that seeks to explore how artists and cultural workers intervene into current political debates and social struggles to address inequalities in and beyond the cultural industries. In view of sharpening social, economic and ecological crises and authoritarian politics around the world, the project will empirically investigate the role of arts and cultural production for local and/or transnational social movement building to examine the nature, organisation and effectiveness of activism in the creative industries.
The project will develop both methodological and theoretical contributions to current sociological scholarship on the role of the cultural industries, and of creative work specifically, for broader processes of social and political transformations. We especially appreciate applications from candidates with prior research experience in sociology – including a robust command of social science methods (e.g. ethnography, interviewing, policy/discourse analysis) and thorough theoretical expertise in cultural sociology, the sociology of work and/or social movements – and those with a clear interest in de- and postcolonial frameworks.

PhD position summary/title: PhD project: Resilient Network Concepts for Supply Logistics
This project addresses the effective design of a military supply logistics network, composed of transportation and communication links such as roads and rail, aerial drone routes, and nodes, such as temporary storage and transfer locations, aerial waypoints in an adversarial environment or warfighting situation. Kinetic threats can disrupt the supply by interrupting, damaging or destroying parts of this network (for instance by jamming aerial routes, or damaging transportation links), which are critical to the fighting forces. The visibility of the battlefield is increasing through satellite and drone imagery collection. A negative consequence to blue (belonging to “friendly” forces) supply networks is that the adversary can see and attack logistics networks.
The blue military supply logistics networks need to deal with this increased visibility by reducing their footprint. Reducing the footprint means that supply networks need to be heterogeneous in their transport means, consider alternative energy sources, and that the operations must be less predictable in their chosen transport means and locations. Thus, the goal is to explore reduced predictability while sustaining the units to be supplied.
