(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position (m/f/d): Biomolecular Condensates in Synthetic Cells
Synthetic cells hold great promise in the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. However, molecular payloads synthesised inside synthetic cells must be secreted and new molecular building blocks or drugs must be delivered to synthetic cells in a smart and programmable way. Condensates have recently been shown to interact with membranes in a rich and dynamic way, including the possibility of entering giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs) via endocytosis. In this project, you will develop synthetic cells and condensates that exhibit a tunable affinity for the GUV inner membrane. The membrane affinity will be controlled via biochemical pathways that regulate ATP levels and that regulate the self-organisation of protein filaments. Enzyme-controlled condensates will be directed to the membrane, where condensate property modulation and membrane remodelling are used to directly uptake or secrete condensates through membrane wrapping to deliver biomolecular payloads concentrated inside the condensates. This may enable future use of synthetic cells for the development of RNA and protein-based therapeutics.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Multimodal Signalling and Processing in Face-to-face Communication at the Donders Centre for Cognition
You will work on a collaborative project using corpus analyses to investigate how participants in conversational interaction make their intentions clear through visual signals (using the face, head, gaze and/or hands) in conjunction with linguistic structures and prosody. The project also investigates how the contribution of visual signals, words and prosody are processed during comprehension (using experimental behavioural and EEG paradigms, including interactive settings). You will be involved in both the corpus and the experimental work.
You will be based in Nijmegen, where you will join the Communication in Social Interaction group headed by Dr Judith Holler (www.cosilab.nl), but you will form part of a larger team involving members with different expertise, partly located at different universities (Dr Kendrick, York University (UK); Prof. Grice, Cologne University (Germany); Prof. Swerts/Dr Peeters, Tilburg University (NL); Dr Linda Drijvers, Radboud University). You will be expected to travel to these locations for workshops, research visits and training.
In addition to writing your thesis, you will disseminate the project findings through scientific journal articles, presentations at conferences, group and project meetings, as well as through public engagement events and writing for non-academic audiences. You will spend about 10% of your time (0.1 FTE) assisting with teaching at our department.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: AI-assisted Physical Attacks on PQC Implementations
This project investigates how to efficiently evaluate the resistance of post-quantum cryptographic implementations to physical attacks. The increased key sizes and more complex mathematical principles of PQC, in combination with countermeasures to side-channel analysis (SCA) attacks, significantly increase the data and computational complexity to analyse an implementation and evaluate side-channel leakage and fault tolerance. The project will exploit similarities and connections between side-channel analysis and genomics to develop novel methods and computational approaches for future-proof SCA techniques. It will create an advanced security testing suite that incorporates cutting-edge bio-inspired and deep learning-based SCA techniques, as well as several hardware acceleration IP blocks, optimised for high-performance SCA.
The concrete focus of your PhD research will be determined based on your interests and background. Possible topics and tasks include, but are not limited to: (i) considering existing deep learning SCA methodologies and revisiting them in the light of new complexity issues brought by implementations of PQC; (ii) exploring connections between bio-based and deep learning methods and their role in security evaluation, (iii) developing novel SCA methods inspired by genomics principles and algorithms, (iv) performing leakage assessment as a combination of techniques derived in the project and showcasing them on lightweight and PQC crypto implementations; (v) exploring language models for SCA.
You will be supervised by Lejla Batina and Stjepan Picek to conduct research and publish the results in top-ranked international academic conferences and journals. Within the project, you are expected to collaborate with researchers from the University of Twente and a number of companies in the project’s user committee.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Putting Explainable AI to Work to Support Cultural Heritage
Metadata is data about data. It plays a key role in allowing people to access and use the information in libraries and archive catalogues. Despite recent technical advances of AI for interpreting text and images, the generation of metadata for large collections of historical books, images, and texts remains an unsolved problem. In this project, we work together with the KB National Library of the Netherlands in order to put explainable AI to use in libraries. For example, the KB National Library is seeking ways to enrich metadata for illustrations contained in important portions of its historical book collection and the library is also in need of technology that can establish new links between books in their million-scale collection that explain how the books are related.
In this multidisciplinary PhD project supervised by Dr Iris Hendrickx and Prof. Martha Larson, you will combine insights from explainable AI, data science, information retrieval, natural language processing and library science to address the practical challenges faced by large libraries. The project is part of the larger HAICu project, a Netherlands-wide initiative on AI and cultural heritage. You will carry out your research in collaboration with the KB National Library of the Netherlands, and you will have the opportunity to work with experts on the library premises in The Hague. There are many directions in which your research can contribute to the library and the direction of research will be determined in collaboration with experts from the library. The library will also provide rich data sets for use in the research and criteria for evaluating the success of the approaches you develop. You will be expected to conduct high-quality research, proposing creative solutions, working diligently, interacting with peers throughout the Netherlands, and publishing papers at top venues. Your teaching load will be up to 10% of your working time.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Computational Cognitive Neuroscience – Multisensory Perceptual Inference, Learning and Attention
Join our multidisciplinary team to study the computations and neural mechanisms underlying some of the brain’s most fundamental challenges: perceptual inference and decision making, learning, attention and probabilistic/statistical computation.
Your research will combine computational modelling (Bayesian, neural network), psychophysics, and/or neuroimaging (fMRI, including ultra-high-field (7T) fMRI, MEG/EEG) to explore these processes.
As a PhD candidate, you will also have the opportunity to develop valuable skills by mentoring students, participating in international conferences, and collaborating with leading researchers. We offer access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a 7T fMRI scanner, and a supportive environment for your academic and professional development. Your teaching load may be up to 5% of your working time.
