(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Spider Silk Protein Biochemistry

Come join our spider silk team! In this project we will elucidate the secrets behind how different proteins affect the properties of different spider silks (one individual spider can spin up to seven different silk types!). As a research group we are interested in how spiders have solved problems related to protein production, storage and polymerization, and strive to develop methods for producing the material by recombinant protein production and biomimetic fiber spinning. Recently, we have discovered that spider silk, in addition to the well-known spidroins, is made up from many proteins that lack a known function. Now we are looking for an ambitious student that has a great passion for research. The PhD project is centered around recombinant expression, purification and biophysical and biochemical characterization of these enigmatic proteins. You will also spin fibers in our biomimetic spinning device and characterize the fibers by tensile tests.

Deadline : 2024-08-26.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in artificial intelligence in agriculture

The agriculture sector is increasingly focusing on advanced digital technologies to adapt to environmental and operational challenges. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems are transforming agricultural practices to smarter and more efficient farming systems. In this context, machine vision is crucial for field and crop health monitoring, allowing for the detection and response to crop issues in real-time. These technologies are creating new opportunities in agriculture, especially when integrated with autonomous machines that optimize resource use, enhance productivity, and ensure sustainable practices by enabling accurate and individual monitoring.

We are seeking a motivated PhD candidate to focus on developing robust and adaptive AI models based on agricultural imaging data (e.g., digital, multispectral and/or hyperspectral) from dynamic and complex environments across different scenarios tailored for Swedish farming systems. A particular focus would be developing machine vision models with generative machine learning techniques and/or multimodal learning to enhance the monitoring and scoring ability of AI models in agriculture.

Deadline : 2024-09-02.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student

The goal of the doctoral project in forest pathology is to create knowledge about trees’ defense responses and develop methods that help forest tree breeders and forest nurseries to identify trees with a better ability to handle biotic and abiotic stress.

You are expected to conduct research, in collaboration with researchers at the dept. of  forest mycology and plant pathology, and the Umeå Plant Science Center (UPSC), which leads to a doctoral thesis. The doctoral studies includes courses corresponding to at least 30 higher education credits You are also expected to complete an industrial internship at your employer Södra.

In your research, you will use a combination of different methods such as population genetics, transcriptomics and testing resistance to root rot and Diplodia tip blight in pine under normal conditions and under abiotic stress.

Deadline : 2024-08-19.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in agrarian history

The PhD student we are looking for will be part of the ERC-funded project TransRein. TransRein is about the sweeping change that took place in northern Eurasia, from the Atlantic coast to the Bering Strait, during the early modern era when an economy based on hunting and fishing and small reindeer herds transitioned to large-scale reindeer husbandry. It was a change that fundamentally affected people and societies. In the doctoral project, one aspect of this change will be studied, the social consequences, and it will be done in a Sami context. The thesis work will therefore touch on issues such as: heritage, gender, social justice, division of labor, households, networks and social relations, all about indigenous peoples. The doctoral project’s design and exact questions are drawn up in collaboration between the supervisors and the person receiving the position.

During the four-year doctoral period, the doctoral student must devote themselves to their own doctoral education, which includes participation in research projects, writing a doctoral thesis and taking doctoral education courses corresponding to 90 credits (an application to change to 75 credits is under preparation, but not yet decided). Up to one semester will be spent at the Ostrom Workshop at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA. Department service, such as organizing workshops and seminars, of a maximum of 20% may be relevant in addition to the four-year doctoral period. The doctoral student will work together with colleagues within TransRein and carry out an independent doctoral project. The doctoral project is a development of the department’s successful work in studying early modern natural resource use and jointly owned resources. Research leader for TransRein is associate professor Jesper Larsson.

Deadline : 2024-08-31.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student (Sustainable Food Systems)

FOODCoST aims to support the transition towards sustainable food systems by proposing a harmonising methodology in the frame of True Cost Accounting to calculate externalities in climate, biodiversity, environmental, social and health along the food value chain.

The PhD student will focus mainly on understanding value chain stakeholders who generate or benefit from the negative, hidden costs of production and to explore ways to communicate these costs to consumers (through labelling and information).

The research will involve interviews with stakeholders and possibilities for designing, implementing and analyzing experiments in retail environments.

Deadline : 2024-08-09.
