(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student in Sociology

This PhD project will be carried out as part of the WASP-HS Research Cluster AI, Power and Politics (https://www.umu.se/en/research/projects/ai-power-and-politics/). The candidate will analyse how AI-driven technologies reshape opinion dynamics and the public’s trust in media ecosystems. Central to this PhD project is a critical inquiry into how algorithmic systems influence the circulation of information and disinformation across digital platforms, and how such processes affect perceptions of credibility, truth, and democratic legitimacy.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position for Development of Organic Light-Emission Devices in the EU Training Network FADOS

You will be performing your PhD research at LunaLEC and at The Organic Electronics and Photonics Group (OPEG) at Umeå University, Sweden (see: opeg-umu.com). The research will be focused on the development of a novel light-emission technology termed the light-emitting electrochemical cell (LEC). The LEC is currently attracting increasing interest from both academia and industry since it can: (i) deliver bright and easily patterned light emission at low voltage; (ii) be thin, lightweight and flexible; (iii) be fabricated in its entirety by cost- and energy-efficient ambient-air printing; (iv) be highly sustainable (free from toxic and rare compounds and potentially recyclable). The focus of LunaLEC is to leverage these attractive properties to produce commercially competitive LEC devices fit for a variety of applications.

The attractive properties of the LEC technology originate in that the organic semiconductor (OSC) in the active material can be electrochemically p- and n-type doped at the two electrodes, and that a light-emitting p-n junction, as a consequence, can form in the bulk under electrical bias. It has recently been demonstrated that the structure of this in situ formed p-n junction has a strong influence on the LEC performance. The first part of the project is thus aimed at the investigation of how the OSC selection and the printing processing of the active material influences the doping capacity and balance and thereby the p-n junction doping structure. The second part of the project comprises the utilization of this new knowledge for a rational design and a scalable printing fabrication

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computing Science with focus on Visual Language Grounding

The advertised position is part of a project funded by the Marcus and Amalia Wallenberg Foundation (MAW). The project explores the possibilities and implications of AI-enabled conversational guides for enhancing visitors’ learning and experiences in public educational environments.

The PhD student will focus on addressing the challenge of visual blindness in large language models (LLMs)—that is, the inability of a model to effectively process or understand visual information. This work involves integrating visual encoders with language models to create multimodal systems. The emphasis is on agentic approaches, where an LLM interacts with visual tools, which may themselves be neural networks. Central challenges include enabling LLMs to reason about visual structures, designing appropriate benchmarks for the target domain, and determining which fusion architectures best balance performance, interpretability, and computational efficiency.

The student will collaborate closely with visualization researchers, AI specialists, research engineers, educational scientists, and pedagogues across Linköping University, Visualization Center C in Norrköping, and Umeå University to investigate the impact of emerging AI-driven educational technologies on learning in public educational spaces. The PhD student is expected to produce research outputs relevant to the fields of visualization and multimodal machine learning.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD-student in Computing Science with focus on Computer Security

Our societies rely on computer systems and on software stacks. Unfortunately, software systems contain bugs and vulnerabilities which can be exploited by malicious actors. This project will be conducted in the Software Engineering and Security (SES) group. The PhD student will conduct an in-depth investigation of a class of vulnerabilities and devise static and/or dynamic approaches to detect them in the code or prevent their execution at runtime.

Keywords for this project: code analysis, static analysis, reverse engineering, defense mechanisms, vulnerability detection, exploit mitigation techniques, scalability, software systems, software quality, malware, computer security, fuzzing, software testing.
