(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate
The Department of Mathematics is advertising a 24-month post-doctoral position (PDRA) to work within the auspices of the Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship “Uncertainty quantification, data-driven simulations and learning of multiscale complex systems governed by PDEs” under the guidance of Professor Lorenzo Pareschi. The successful candidate will join the Department of Mathematics in the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences and the Maxwell Institute Applied and Computational Mathematics theme. The nature and level of the research will require the appointment of a PDRA, who should have a good mathematical background in the analysis and modelling of stochastic particle systems, and in the construction of numerical methods for kinetic and mean-field PDEs. In addition, good programming skills in languages such as Python and Matlab are required.
Deadline : 01/04/2024
(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc summary/title: Research Associate in Carbon Dioxide Removal
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic person to work with us to develop/adapt reactive transport models for geochemical carbon dioxide removal. Carbon dioxide removal using rocks and minerals is recognised as an important part of meeting climate targets, but the merits and drawbacks of many approaches remain poorly understood. Upon completion of this ambitious project, the research team (working with partners at the University of Alberta, Monash University, and the Australian Synchrotron) will have completed ground-breaking research on demonstrating a new method of mineralisation of alkaline mine waste.
We are looking for a candidate with a range of skills in geochemical modelling. The successful applicant must hold a degree in a physical sciences, engineering, or maths. There are also opportunities to participate in our other projects in CO2 capture, utilisation and storage, and carbon dioxide removal (https://rccs.hw.ac.uk).
Deadline : 12/18/2023

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate
We seek a skilled data scientist to create a precise ML predictive model for two key outputs. Your work will optimise production processes and lead to an interactive nutritional platform powered by innovative ML algorithms trained on unique data.
We’re looking for a well organised and highly efficient do-er, interested in optimising the processes for a novel ingredient company, working closely with Prof. Sandhya Patidar as the academic partner and team members of the industry partner at Aquanzo.
Deadline : 01/03/2024
(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Optical Metasurfaces for Manipulating Optical Vortex Beams
The successful candidate will work on the creation and manipulation of complex structured beams with flat optics for the Leverhulme Trust project. Optical vortex beams (OVBs) have found many applications ranging from particle manipulation to quantum entanglement. However, there is a fundamental challenge in the design since only one topological charge is included in an OVB, which is unsuitable for applications where nonuniform OAM distributions are needed. Although there is a solution to solve this challenge, the optical system currently in use to generate and manipulate these beams is very bulky and complex. Driven by device miniaturization and system integration, there is huge interest in developing ultrathin and lightweight planar optical devices with novel functionalities that cannot be obtained with conventional optical elements.
Deadline :01/05/2024
(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in the Theory of Bio-inspired Collective Light Matter Interactions
Super- and subradiance are quintessential quantum effects of relevance across natural photosynthesis and quantum technologies. In this project we will create the first fully coherent, scalable, and controllable artificial platform for exploring, analysing and tailoring such effects in the condensed matter.
Working alongside two PhD students and an experimentally focused PDRA, this theoretical post aims to develop and explore experimentally accessible signatures of collective light-matter coupling effects for small ensembles of condensed-matter emitters, both via analytical approaches as well as numerical code.

About Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Official Website
Heriot-Watt University (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world’s first mechanics’ institute, and subsequently granted university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the eighth oldest higher education institute in UK. The name Heriot-Watt was taken from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.
Known for its focus on science and engineering, it is one of the 39 old universities in the UK comprising the second cluster of elite universities after Oxbridge.
Heriot-Watt was established as the School of Arts of Edinburgh by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner on 16 October 1821. Having been inspired by Anderson’s College in Glasgow, Horner established the School to provide practical knowledge of science and technology to Edinburgh’s working men. The institution was initially of modest size, giving lectures two nights a week in rented rooms and boasting a small library of around 500 technical works. It was also oversubscribed, with admissions soon closing despite the cost of 15 shillings for a year’s access to lectures and the library.
The School was managed by a board of eighteen directors and primarily funded by sponsors from the middle and upper classes including Robert Stevenson and Walter Scott. It first became associated with the inventor and engineer James Watt in 1824, as a means of raising funds to secure permanent accommodation. Justifying the association, School Director Lord Cockburn said:
