05 Postdoctoral Fellowship at Tampere University, Finland

The Industrial Engineering and Management Unit (IEM) is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for a fixed 4-year term. IEM is part of the Faculty of Management and Business (MAB) at Tampere University and offers education in the fields of engineering at the BSc, MSc and doctoral levels. Researchers at IEM are known for their broad and multidisciplinary collaboration that addresses the latest societal challenges. We take part in multidisciplinary projects with the different faculties and research groups at Tampere University and actively collaborate with other Finnish and international universities and research institutes.

The open positions focus on the research of damage tolerant amorphous oxide coatings, such as amorphous Al₂O₃ and Ga₂O₃, tailored for industries that contribute to future products and sustainable development, such as solid oxide fuels cells, Li-ion batteries, damage tolerant future electronics, damage tolerant tooth laminates, and replacement of PFAS-chemicals in cooking utensils. The emphasis is on advanced vacuum-based thin film deposition and characterization of the deposited materials. The mechanical resilience of the deposited materials is studied using application-relevant standardized methods such as bending, scratching and nanoindentation. The ENS faculty has state-of-the art facilities for materials synthesis, characterization and mechanical testing and the university’s whole research infra can be utilized on demand.

We are looking for one (1) Postdoctoral Research Fellows for each group. 

Autonomous Mobile Machines group: 
The work will be related to robot learning and optimization for a) planning and control for autonomous navigation, and manipulation in non-road applications; b) robust perception and situational awareness in challenging outdoor environments. Both senior researchers and fresh doctors with strong background in optimal control, reinforcement learning, machine leaning in mechanical and robotics systems are encouraged to apply. The research is related to the following projects: 

1. Sillicon to Action: “System-on-Chip and Wireless Technology for Intelligent Machines” funded by Academy of Finland.   

2. SustAInLivWork: Centre of Excellence of AI for Sustainable Living and Working (Horizon Europe) 

3. XSCAVE: Explainable, Safe, Contact-Aware Planning and Control for Heavy Machinery Manipulation and Navigation (Horizon Europe)  

Depending on the experience and interests of the successful candidate the work will be focused on the following tasks: 

• modeling of electro-hydraulic system
• analyzing efficiency, controllability and feasibility for realization

The research topics as a Master thesis require either 

1. Excellent modeling and simulation skills of hydraulic systems 
2. Expertise in hydraulic components and systems design
3. Modeling & Simulation skills in Matlab/Simulink or Amesim seen as advantage
4. Basic skills in CAD software

The project investigates how evolutionary divergence between two closely related hare species (Lepus timidus and Lepus europaeus) leads to differences in cell cycle dynamics and regulation at both physiological and molecular levels. The work integrates core molecular and cell biology methods with advanced live-cell confocal imaging, single-cell ATAC-seq, and nascent RNA transcriptomics. You will lead this development with the support of the team and co-inventor Mikael Marttinen. A doctoral researcher will assist you experimentally, and additional support for both data analysis and wet-lab validation will be provided by our Joensuu collaborators. 

The project seeks to uncover mechanisms linking life history strategies and cell cycle regulation. While relevant to species conservation, the findings are also expected to contribute to cancer biology and the understanding of cellular senescence.
