(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  POSTDOC ON QUANTIFYING NATIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS USING ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS

The European research project AVENGERS develops techniques for improving the greenhouse gas emission reports that countries submit annually to the UNFCCC. Currently most country reports are based solely on emission accounting methods based on statistics on economic activities. This project investigates how results of atmospheric inverse modelling can be used to improve national emission inventories, such that they are consistent with observed changes in greenhouse gas abundances in the atmosphere. The international and multi-disciplinary research team includes scientists as well as inventory experts from national environmental agencies in Europe.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION ON KNOWLEDGE REPRESENTATION AND REASONING FOR SMART DIAGNOSTICS

System-level diagnosis rarely makes use of explicitly modelled knowledge, such as  knowledge graphs, about the various parts of the systems and processes that might be responsible for the downtime of complex cyber-physical systems. This is partially due to the fact that this knowledge is not explicitly available in formal models, but is hidden in the brains of the experts or written documentation, often vaguely specified. Jointly with a PhD student who will be employed on the same project, you will work on extracting knowledge from documents and experts, how to represent this knowledge in the most suitable modelling language(s) and investigate how to apply reasoning (abductive, diagnostic, etc) to various diagnostic methods investigated in the Zorro project.

Deadline :16/07/2023.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC LAND USE AND CLIMATE CHANGE

The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the VU offers one fully funded postdoc position of 24 months in the field of climate change mitigation and adaptation through land use. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a land use model to study mitigation and adaptation in the agriculture, forestry and other land use sectors in two case studies in Germany and Spain. In particular, the postdoc will study how these two regions can contribute to mitigating climate change and adapting to more frequent droughts, heat stress and flooding by modifying their cropland and forest systems. The postdoc will work in the international KNOWING project (https://knowing-climate.eu/), funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe framework with 16 other institutes. The KNOWING project aims to develop a modelling framework to help understand and quantify the interactions between impacts and risks of climate change, mitigation pathways and adaptation strategies across different sectors (agriculture, forestry, urban, energy, transport). The framework will focus on three main climate impact: 1) Heat waves & health, (2) Soil, forest and agriculture (which this postdoc will focus on) and (3) Flooding & infrastructure (including river and coastal flooding).

Deadline : 09/07/2023.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC HEALTHCARE GOVERNANCE, INNOVATION AND TRANSDISCIPLINARITY: BRINGING HEALTHCARE AND GREEN SPACES TOGETHER

This position is part of a European research project in which you will lead a transdisciplinairy study that explores the needs and expectations of key stakeholders within and beyond healthcare systems in Portugal, Germany, Greece, Peru and the Netherlands to engage with so-called nature-based therapies (NBTs). Nature-based therapies (NBT) are seen as treatments that promote well-being and support health prevention and rehabilitation through dedicated programmes in green spaces. Successful uptake of such therapies in present-day healthcare systems in Europe requires transformations in health care governance.

Deadline : 05/07/2023.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC POSITION: BRIDGING SOCIAL AND COMPUTER SCIENCES TO MODEL LIVING SYSTEMATIC REVIEWS

A key part of the scientific process is research synthesis – aggregating research findings on a specific topic and generating a summary of that literature (e.g., meta-analysis). This part of the scientific process presents several challenges to scientists. For example, scientists can be overwhelmed by the vast amount of studies and meta-analyses can take years to produce. Furthermore, meta-analyses can be technically difficult to implement and are often done by experts who have extensive training in these methods. An additional challenge is that once a meta-analysis is completed, they are often published in PDF documents and quickly become outdated with new literature. This project will involve a collaboration between social and computer scientists to develop a model for A.I. to assist scientists in writing and updating living meta-analytic reviews that are continually updated with new evidence.

Deadline : 04/07/2023

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
