(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoc on Ethnography of Robots at work

Despite robots increasingly entering our work lives, we know surprisingly little about their impact on jobs. Engineers are excited to build intelligent robotic applications with the aim to alleviate difficult, risky, or boring jobs, such as cleaning, bomb diffusion, transportation of goods or surveillance. Labor economists and public commentators, in turn, put forward gloomy scenarios of jobs becoming obsolete, degraded or void of meaning. Currently, however, we lack a rigorous insight into how robots are really used in situated work practice. Without such insight, engineers are in the dark about what impact robots have on work and have few methods of including work context into account when building robotic applications. This NWO-funded Vidi project aims to generate such insight by conducting several ethnographic studies of professional service robots at work.

In this context, we are looking for a candidate to fill one Postdoc position for a duration of two years. Starting date is flexible throughout 2024 and will be agreed on with the suitable candidate.

The postdoc will conduct ethnographic research under the supervision of dr. Anastasia V. Sergeeva and will be based at the KIN Center for Digital Innovation at the Vrije Universiteit. KIN research focuses on the development, use and business value of innovative organizational processes and technologies. This research center is a home to a multi-disciplinary group of researchers, with academic backgrounds in business administration, sociology, communication science, anthropology, philosophy, engineering, and computer science. The research contributes to an international field that is relatively new and multi-disciplinary. We work closely together with faculty and researchers from other universities and cooperate with an extensive network of business partners.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Post-doc on Meditation and the Predictive Brain

The project aims to determine the plasticity of the predictive mind using meditation. It starts from the notion that our brain is fundamentally an organ of prediction, continuously predicting or constructing a view of the world based on past experiences and statistical regularities in the environment in service of (future) action. It builds on the proposal (Laukkonen & Slagter, 2021) that certain meditation practices can reduce predictive processing through physical and mental in-action: by bringing the practitioner in the present moment, unaffected by what just happened or may happen in the future. Adopting this perspective of meditation not only inspires a new understanding of the effects of meditation on brain, mind (e.g., attention, the sense of self, awareness), and well-being, but also opens many interesting research questions about the plasticity and automaticity of predictive processing. The postdoc would uniquely contribute and drive research on this topic.

In the Cognition and Plasticity lab, we take an integrative focus, aiming to bring together research on perception, consciousness, and attention with that on action and active inference. We use multiple methodologies, with a current focus on EEG, eye-tracking, and virtual reality, but also some fMRI. More details are available on request from Prof Heleen Slagter, [email protected].

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: POSTDOC USING ADVANCED CRYSTALLOGRAPHIC APPROACHES TO STUDY PHOTOREACTIONS

Serial Crystallography (SX) is an emerging method that allows visualizing the macromolecule interaction with light. SX is a so-called “pump–probe” experiment, where a short UV-Visible light laser pulse excites the chromophores in the molecule while an X-ray pulse is used to probe the newly formed state at a  certain delay after light excitation. As a result, the light-induced X-ray crystallographic electron densities are assigned to reactions and excited-state processes. Postdoctoral research position in SX and dynamic structural biology is available to study light inducible proteins essential for photosynthesis and photobiology. The SX results would be complemented by time-resolved spectroscopy. The position is available now for a minimum of one year, with the possibility of extension.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher in behavioural and energy economics

The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) is the leading knowledge partner of the NWA-ORC funded project ALIGN4energy (A4E) project. A4E is focused on accelerating the energy transition in the residential sector, by combining knowledge and theory from social sciences (psychology, economy, transaction cost theory, political sciences), humanities, and technological science (computer science, energy systems modelling), and stakeholders (e.g., municipalities, housing cooperations). The main outcome of the project will be personalised digital modules to engage citizens in the energy transition.

For this project, IVM is looking for a Postdoc (0.4-0.8 FTE), who will develop and test behavioural interventions that can engage larger groups of citizens with the energy transition. More specifically, we are interested in researching interventions that can attract people to visit – and stay engaged on – online energy platforms. You are also expected to assist the project leader, Dr Sanchayan Banerjee, with teaching (0.2 FTE) and project management duties (0.1 FTE).

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position on the neurotoxicity of pesticide mixtures

We are being exposed to increasingly complex mixtures of pesticides from our environment. There is great concern that these exposures contribute to the increase in neurodevelopmental diseases in humans, such as Parkinson’s Disease. Novel approaches are urgently needed to predict the effect of pesticides on the developing brain, and to explore their impact on neurodegeneration.

In this 2-year postdoctoral project, you will use the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans to explore the impact of environmentally relevant pesticides on neurodevelopment and the progression of Parkinson’s Disease. To achieve this goal, we combine microscopy, developmental assays and molecular biology techniques, such as RNAseq. You will also work with chemists to relate the adverse effects to external and internal pesticide concentrations, thus contributing to the development of (quantitative) Adverse Outcome Pathways. You will develop a longitudinal imaging platform to assess the development of α-synuclein aggregation, a key hallmark of Parkinson’s Disease, throughout the lifespan of the worm. As C. elegans has a relatively simple nervous system, we foresee the use of the nematode to gain additional information as to how pesticides impact neurobehavior, motor function and cognition.

For this project, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to work on location at the VU in Amsterdam. You will be part of the Environmental Health and Toxicology group of A-LIFE within the VU, under the supervision of Dr. Samantha Hughes. Together with the team, you will present your results at national and international conferences, and in relevant scientific journals.

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
