(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  POSTDOC POSITION IN THE FIELD OF SINGLE-MOLECULE BIOPHYSICS

The Dulin lab at VU has to offer one fully funded postdoc position (1+2 years) in the field of biophysics to study protein-nucleic acids interactions to start as soon as possible. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to investigate protein-RNA interactions, with a particular focus on RNA virus’s replication-transcription complex, e.g.  SARS-CoV-2, dengue, chikungunya, using state-of-the-art single molecule techniques, e.g., magnetic tweezers (MT), total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy (TIRFM), correlative MT-TIRFM, single-molecule FRET, combined optical tweezers and fluorescence microscopy. Specifically, our lab aims at reconstituting the viral replication-transcription complex in vitro for the aforementioned viruses. We will use a combination of force and fluorescence spectroscopy to investigate how the composition of these complexes regulate their function. Our long-term goal is to discover new drug antiviral targets. Within the lab, the successful candidate will design and perform experiments, and develop new computational analysis tools to perform these investigations.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title:  POSTDOC: LAND SYSTEM SCIENCE TOOLS FOR ASSESSING PATHWAYS TOWARD ACHIEVING GLOBAL BIODIVERSITY TARGETS
This project will synthesize the extent to which land system science based assessment methods are able to impact on decision making towards implementing  sustainability goals. We will use the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework as a case.
Achieving biodiversity targets might create unanticipated negative consequences for human livelihoods, other sustainability dimensions or (indirectly) biodiversity through demands and influences on land use in places distinct and distant from those where the CBD goals and targets are implemented. The postdoc will work with a small core team of land system scientists (Peter Verburg, Erle Ellis and Yves Zinngrebe) while engaging the larger land system science community.

Deadline : 10/2/2023

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH POSITION ON A PROJECT TO QUANTIFY SPATIAL PATTERNS IN ANTARCTIC TERRESTRIAL BIODIVERSITY

Protecting Antarctic biodiversity is a key aspect of the Antarctic Treaty System, but difficult to achieve given the paucity in spatially explicit data of Antarctic terrestrial biodiversity. To address this issue, a multidisciplinary project “The Antarctic biota count (ABC)” is ongoing to deliver spatially explicit data on terrestrial biodiversity along the Antarctic Peninsula. By quantifying spatial patterns and cryptogam (moss and lichen) functional traits underlying biodiversity and associated ecosystem process rates we aim to develop a systematic approach to Antarctic conservation planning. Within the ABC project we are looking for a motivated researcher who wants to contribute to Antarctic conservation through integrating data from this project on spatial biodiversity patterns and ecosystem processes. The main objective is to deliver a data-driven approach to Antarctic conservation planning and provide a baseline to which future changes can be monitored. The project runs in close collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey (UK).

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  POSTDOC ON QUANTIFYING NATIONAL GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS USING ATMOSPHERIC MEASUREMENTS

The European research project AVENGERS develops techniques for improving the greenhouse gas emission reports that countries submit annually to the UNFCCC. Currently most country reports are based solely on emission accounting methods based on statistics on economic activities. This project investigates how results of atmospheric inverse modelling can be used to improve national emission inventories, such that they are consistent with observed changes in greenhouse gas abundances in the atmosphere. The international and multi-disciplinary research team includes scientists as well as inventory experts from national environmental agencies in Europe.

About  The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website

The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.

In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.

The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
