(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the field of transmission electron microscopy of 2D van der Waals layered ferroelectrics

You will contribute to a research project in the field of free-standing ferroelectric membranes. The emphasis will be on the growth and characterization of complex polarization textures in 2D van der Waals ferroelectric superlattices. You will design and realize cutting-edge scanning transmission electron microscopy experiments (e.g. aberration-corrected STEM, STEM-DPC, 4D-STEM, ptychography, EELS and EDX). Additionally, a substantial part of this position involves the development and/or implementation of algorithms for data analysis and phase-field simulations.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Nanomaterials Engineering for Intraocular Infection with Antimicrobial Resistant Bacteria

The student will develop multifunctional nanoparticles to efficiently eradicate multidrug-resistant bacteria and mitigate retinal damage caused by bacterial infections. The project will involve the synthesis and physicochemical characterization of the nanoparticles, as well as biological assessment in relevant in vitro systems. Additionally, the student will establish an ex vivo endophthalmitis model to demonstrate the efficacy of the nanocomplexes under conditions closely simulate in vivo environment.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position on Compression-Dominant 3D-Printed Concrete Structural Systems for Buildings

In this project you will focus on structural form finding of compression-dominated structural systems for buildings. The structural system will be composed of discrete blocks made up of 3D printed concrete. Compression-dominant behavior will be achieved by designing an optimized structural form that directs forces primarily into compression paths, minimizing tensile stresses. This behavior will be further enhanced through mechanically induced compression using iron-based shape memory alloy (Fe-SMA) reinforcement.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Application of Raman spectroscopy for Biomarker Detection in Wounds

The student will use Raman spectroscopy to identify a handful of protein and metabolite biomarkers for different phases of wound healing and define when presence of specific proteins/metabolites can indicate initiation of chronic wounds. The project will involve preparation of artificial wound exudates, as well as measurements on wound exudates from patients. The student will combine Raman spectroscopy, along with cutting-edge machine learning approaches and statistical analysis, to enable timely identification of high risk for the chronic wound formation.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on multi-constituent nanopastes for sinter-bonding

The Laboratory of Joining Technologies and Corrosion at Empa in Dübendorf drives innovations in joining technologies and corrosion management to enable evolution towards increasingly efficient, reliable and sustainable material technologies.

Joining is a key-enabling technology for advanced manufacturing. In order to address increasingly complex demands on joining (dissimilar materials combinations, miniaturisation, extreme operation conditions, thermal management issues, life-cycle considerations and sustainability,…), nano-micro-joining (NMJ) aims at utilising nanoscale, out-of-equilibrium effects for joining purposes, e.g. to achieve joints with higher operation temperature at lower joining temperature. A major NMJ research effort is the development of nanoparticle pastes (nanopastes) for sinter-bonding. For our research activities in this field, we are looking for a PhD candidate to investigate the feasibility and application potential of multi-constituent nanopastes. This PhD project runs over 4 years, and is offered in collaboration with ETH Zurich.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Atomic and Molecular Quantum Magnetism

You will play a key role in conducting systematic research on the quantum coherent manipulation of spins on surfaces. Particular emphasis is placed on molecular spin systems, where you can harness quantum correlations of many-body spin systems, enabled by atomically precise bottom-up synthesis. In our newly established lab, you will use low-temperature, high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and tuning fork atomic force microscopy (QPlus AFM), combined with electron spin resonance techniques.
