(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Biosciences (Restoration Ecology) : Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Assessing and enhancing functional biodiversity in solar parks and ecological restoration projects (RS848)

As part of the Restoration Ecology and Dynamics (READY) Doctoral Focal Award, we invite applications to the following PhD project: Assessing and enhancing functional biodiversity in solar parks and ecological restoration projects.

Solar parks are rapidly becoming a prominent feature in our landscapes, representing one of the most significant newly emerging changes in anthropogenic land-use. While their primary function is to generate renewable energy (at the cost of covering large areas with solar panels), there is growing recognition that solar parks also offer a unique opportunity to restore and enhance terrestrial biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, critical gaps remain in understanding how the design, structure, and landscape context of solar parks influence ecological communities, and how habitat enrichment strategies can be tailored for best conservation success.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Biosciences (Restoration Ecology) : Fully Funded Phd Studentship in Harnessing ecosystem resilience to inform woodland restoration across Wales (RS849)

In this project we will adopt a multi-disciplinary approach including empirical data analysis, experiments, and theoretical modelling to develop science-based management strategies for the restoration of woodland ecosystems. We will collect, and collate from public sources, data on the current status of ecological communities in several woodland patches across Wales, encompassing all taxa. The data will comprise species presence and distributions as well as ecological interactions. These data will be analysed to understand similarities and differences between disturbed and undisturbed patches to assess resilience. If feasible, measures of resilience will be complemented with mesoscale experiments involving connected patches of woodland communities to assess their reaction to change. Data from both experiments and the field will be used to inform computational models considering networks of patches and their species and interactions composition to predict spatial and temporal community structure across restoration gradients, aimed at developing a predictive decision-making framework to facilitate the design of restoration strategies.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Biosciences (Restoration Ecology) : Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Measurement and modelling of future persistence of restored peatlands at their bioclimatic range limits (RS850)

In this project we aim at filling this gap by examining the persistence of peatlands under future climate change, incorporating projected outcomes from restoration activities and the identification of environmental tipping points from mechanistic modelling of species distributions and habitat suitability. Possible topics to be investigated include (but are not limited to): species distribution modelling and desiccation thresholds for peat-forming Sphagnum moss species; rewetting and water table dynamics; drought response; physical aspects (such as pre-restoration compaction, hydraulic conductivity, changes in microtopography); and the role of shallow peats. The direction of the PhD will be open for the student to refine. We anticipate a mix of field data collection, laboratory and Sphagnum growth experiments, alongside a strong modelling component. The work will focus on exemplar sites within the UK, with potential opportunity to expand to other global peatland sites at their range limits.

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Biosciences (Restoration Ecology): Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Restoring Intertidal Systems using Electronics (RS851)

Successful candidate will first construct sensors using microcontrollers (e.g., Arduinos and peripheral sensors). These sensors will be designed to measure key determinants of restoration success (e.g., hydrodynamics and water quality) and include advanced features such as remote data transfer making them highly user-friendly. Calibration of these devices will be done in both flume and field settings. The sensors will then be deployed in alongside planted saltmarsh and seagrass across Wales, and potentially planted mangroves in India, Bangladesh, or Vietnam, to track intertidal transitions from unvegetated to vegetated states as metrics of restoration success. Depending on the candidate’s prior experience and research interests, there is also the possibility of developing a computational model to simulate hydro-sedimentary dynamics and morphology between restored patches to explore conditions favourable for restoration. Validated with data on vegetation cover and elevation change gathered from repeat drone surveys, this ground-breaking research will identify the factors key to ensuring optimal, rapid, and successful restoration.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: History: Fully Funded PhD Studentship in Early education, education, education: childcare in the policy and imagination of New Labour’s England, 1994-2003 (RS852)

This studentship explores the policies and practice of childcare as envisaged by New Labour between 1994 and the early 2000s. The student will use recently opened material held at The National Archives to investigate the politics of childcare, and to consider the ways that it intersected with, and was informed by, governmental interest in poverty, the family, work, and social mobility during this era of contemporary British history. The project will be particularly appealing to students with an interest in the politics of the late-1990s and early 2000s, and students with an interest in the social history of gender and the family in the period. The student will be supported to undertake original oral history interviews with policy makers and childcare professionals alongside archival research, and will receive training to develop these skills.

It will be jointly supervised by Dr Sarah Crook and Dr Jessamy Carlson. The student will be expected to engage with the research environment of both Swansea University and The National Archives, although there is no residency requirement around proximity to Swansea UniversityThe student will be encouraged to undertake training in oral history methodologies, as well as to undertake training in other approaches as necessary. The student will also be supported to present their work at relevant conferences and seminars.

Deadline : 25 July 2025

Swansea University (Welsh: Prifysgol Abertawe) is a public research university located in Swansea, Wales, United Kingdom. It was chartered as University College of Swansea in 1920, as the fourth college of the University of Wales. In 1996, it changed its name to the University of Wales Swansea following structural changes within the University of Wales. The title of Swansea University was formally adopted on 1 September 2007 when the University of Wales became a non-membership confederal institution and the former members became universities in their own right.

Swansea University has three faculties across its two campuses which are located on the coastline of Swansea Bay. The Singleton Park Campus is set in the grounds of Singleton Park to the west of Swansea city centre. The £450 million Bay Campus, which opened in September 2015, is located next to Jersey Marine Beach to the east of Swansea in the Neath Port Talbot area. The annual income of the institution for 2021–22 was £369.9 million of which £69.2 million was from research grants and contracts, with an expenditure of £446.3 million.

It is the third largest university in Wales in terms of number of students. It offers about 450 undergraduate courses, 280 postgraduate taught and 150 postgraduate research courses to 20,375 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
