PhD position summary/title: Colombo: Layered Histories in the Global South City PhD Studentship (Fixed Term)
The UKRI-funded 5-year project, ‘Colombo: Layered Histories in the Global South City’, selected for funding by the European Research Council under its ‘HORIZON’ programme, is recruiting to its doctoral studentship.
This is a fully funded full-time international studentship for three years, commencing January 2026. The prospective doctoral student will focus their attention within the broad field of the ‘Environmental and/or cultural history of Colombo’, ideally in the early modern or modern era. Given the project’s aim to generate dialogue between Sri Lanka and Europe, candidates applying from Sri Lanka are especially encouraged.
Colombo has a deeply layered imperial past. It came under a succession of European empires, Portuguese (first trading post in 1518), Dutch (1656-1796) and British (1796-1948). It was also pivotal to the early globalisation of Islam and has housed a series of diasporic and minority communities. This project interrogates how invaders and residents made a city in an unstable environment at the centre of the Indian Ocean, in which arose a diverse society, generating an abundance of cultural production and a sequence of violent politics.

PhD position summary/title: EPSRC IDLA PhD Studentship – Measuring and influencing user experience of automotive interiors
This is an exciting opportunity to participate in a cutting-edge interdisciplinary research project supported by an industrial collaborator. Automotive designers strive to offer drivers and passengers luxurious transportation. An important aspect of this is the interior environment of the vehicle, particularly the ways in which vehicle occupants experience tranquillity, serenity and calm. Many factors influence this, including multi-sensory perceptions, design features and vehicle dynamics. A focus on these factors not only has the potential to improve customer satisfaction but also reduce driver workload, increase usability and generally make the vehicle a special place to be.
The project will treat the experience of tranquillity as a phenomenon that can be measured and influenced. That phenomenon will be defined, decomposed and assessed through attention to artefacts and practices across a range of sectors and disciplines. Focusing on the automotive context, the project will develop a comprehensive model of what tranquillity is, the factors that influence it and how to design for it. Attention to design contexts and design processes will be key to ensuring that useful measurements, methods and representations are developed. In particular, the project will support designers to achieve driver and passenger experiences that surpass current best-in-class benchmarks. Beyond the automotive sector, the project might also contribute to our understanding of how other spaces can be designed to support the required user experiences.

PhD position summary/title: Junior Clinical Training Scholar in Small Animal Surgery and Anaesthesia
The Department seeks to recruit a Junior Clinical Training Scholar (JCTS) in Surgery and Anaesthesia from January 2026, or as soon as possible after that date, in order to enhance provision of the Small Animal Surgical and Anaesthesia services and undergraduate teaching.
You will help to facilitate the smooth running of the Small Animal Soft Tissue and Orthopaedic Surgery services by supporting the team with all aspects of the work-up, diagnosis and management of small animal surgical patients, helping with scheduling of appointments, preparation for and assisting with surgeries, and the post-surgical aftercare and discharge of the patients. You will contribute to the Anaesthesia service by assisting with sedations and anaesthesia of the wide range of surgical and medical patients seen at the Queen’s Veterinary School Hospital and including the critical care unit. You will support final-year veterinary students during their small animal surgery and anaesthesia rotations.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship in Logistics Automation
A PhD studentship is available to work on Logistics automation. The student associate will work in the Intelligent Logistics Group within the Distributed Information and Automation Laboratory (DIAL). DIAL is based at the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM).
The PhD will be oriented around one of the focus areas of the Intelligent Logistics Group which includes low cost digital solutions for SME logistics providers, resilient forecasting and planning of logistics operations, management of sustainable logistics operations, next generation warehouse automation and others. The work will involve developments such as novel algorithms to support logistics operations, novel automation approaches or the design and development of new digital support tools for logistics providers. Significant flexibility will be given to the successful candidate to ensure the PhD project is suited to their interests. Part of the first year of the PhD studies will involve undertaking mini studies in one or more of the above areas to consolidate the PhD focus. The PhD will involve interaction with one or more industrial partners and industrial case studies to ensure the work is industrially relevant as well as academically new.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentships in Neuromorphic Computing
Two fully-funded 3-year PhD studentships are available in Neuromorphic and Bio-inspired computing at the interface between control engineering, electrical engineering, computational neuroscience, artificial neural networks and bio-inspired robotics:
“Rhythmic-reactive regulation for robotic locomotion” (Supervisor: Prof Fulvio Forni) will apply techniques from nonlinear control and optimisation to develop novel, bio-inspired neural networks that flexibly and robustly control locomotion in multi-limbed robots.
“Self-organised clocks for reliable spiking computation” (Supervisor: Prof Timothy O’Leary) uses principles from systems neuroscience to develop reliable, low-power spiking neural networks and learning algorithms for implementation in a new generation of neuromorphic hardware.
Both projects are part of a European consortium (https://www.elevate-dn.eu), providing access to a community of 20 PhD students in world class institutions throughout Europe and a dedicated summer school. Candidates will join a thriving network of researchers with mixed backgrounds, based in the University of Cambridge.

PhD position summary/title: Systems pathology of the breast tumour microenvironment in obesity
Being overweight is a known risk factor for developing breast cancer, and obese patients experience poorer outcomes. But the biological basis of these associations remains poorly understood. Past efforts have investigated the link between obesity and the primary tumour, but these analyses relied on data derived from bulk tissue samples lacking cellular and spatial resolution. The hypothesis underpinning this project is that obesity alters the cellular content, activation state and, critically, the spatial architecture of the tumour microenvironment in breast cancer. To test this idea we must characterise thousands of tumours with single-cell and spatial resolution, associated with data on patient height and weight. Using our expertise in single-cell spatial analysis and collaborations with leading epidemiologists, we have collated unique data resources that will enable us to characterise the link between obesity and the breast tumour microenvironment at unprecedented resolution. Moreover, we will also explore the role of exercise in modifying the microenvironment of normal breast tissue in an exercise trial. This is a remarkable opportunity for a motivated scientist to unpick the impact of host factors on tumour structure. To lead this research as a doctoral student you will be passionate about using large-scale data to address important questions in cancer research, have extensive experience of quantitative analyses, and be a positive contributor to our focussed team. Individuals with experience of epidemiology are especially encouraged to apply.
