PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher

The position is related to the project “Comprehensive measurement of aerosol light absorption with cantilever photoacoustic spectroscopy” of Academy Research Fellow Juho Karhu (https://researchportal.helsinki.fi/en/persons/juho-karhu ) and is done in conjunction with the Laser Spectroscopy Group (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/laser-spectroscopy ). The group has a long history of applying cantilever enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy for high performance gas sensing, and in the past few years has extended the technique to aerosol absorption measurements of black carbon (https://doi.org/10.1080/02786826.2021.1998338 ). The new project aims to further expand on the photoacoustic black carbon measurements, revise the instrumentation to cover a wider range of target particles, and apply the method also for infrared absorption spectroscopy of aerosols.

We are looking for a motivated student with keen interest towards experimental research. Past experience with optical instrumentation or aerosol transport phenomenon are advantages for an optimal candidate. The applicant should hold a master’s degree in chemistry, physics, or a related field. The applicant should either hold a doctoral study right at University of Helsinki or be able to attain one within the 6 months trial period at the beginning of employment.

University of Helsinki offers an opportunity to work and study in an international, multidisciplinary research environment. The salary is based on the collective agreement followed by Finnish universities, with starting salary typically in the range of 2500-2800 €/month.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in the Field of Genetics and Gene Therapy

HORIZON-EUROPE Consortium project, main goal is to develop a new bioprinting platform capable of spatially patterning numerous CRISPR/Cas-9 genome edited cellular aggregates or microtissues into scaled-up, personalised durable load-bearing grafts and guiding their (re)modelling into fully functional articular cartilage tissues in vivo within damaged or diseased cartilage joint environments. This will be achieved using a converged bioprinting approach capable of rapidly depositing cells and microtissues into guiding scaffold structures with high spatial resolution in a rapid, reliable, reproducible and quantifiable manner. These guiding structures will then function to direction the fusion and remodelling of cellular aggregates and microtissues into structurally organised tissues in vitro and in vivo, as well as providing medium-term (3-5years) mechanical support to the regenerating tissue. The Consortium is composed of: University of Helsinki (Finland), University College Dublin (Ireland), Trinity College Dublin (Ireland), UMC Utrecht (Netherlands), The University Hospital of Würzburg (Germany), University of Aveiro (Portugal), University of Basel (Switzerland), University of Otago (New Zealand) as well as leading SME’s in articular cartilage regeneration therapy and 3D Bioprinting. In our group you will have an opportunity to gain knowledge in osteoarthritis and cartilage repair, use versatile analysis methods, do data analysis, learn scientific communication and develop your own collaboration network. We offer you a motivating working environment in a multidisciplinary research group, supervisors who are ready to guide you in your journey to an independent researcher. You will work along with other researchers and laboratory technicians from the Helsinki Rheumatic Diseases & Inflammation Group, and our extensive international collaboration network with profound knowledge of the latest state-of-the-art analysis methods, clinical and animal studies, along with bioinformatics and computational modelling. The lab research funders include Horizon Europe, Academy of Finland, Jane & Aatos Erkko Foundation, HUS, Orton, and Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Deadline : 31st October 2024

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, Boreal Peatlands

Boreal peatlands store vast amounts of carbon and are important carbon sinks that help mitigate global warming. Increasing drought in the boreal zone threatens these carbon sinks as limited water availability can drastically reduce plant production. The water use strategies of boreal peatland plants in response to drought and their impact on peatland production, however, are largely unknown. Therefore, we urgently need to understand the water use of peatland plants and its implications for peatland carbon sink potentials. To address this knowledge gap, our project will assess the drought response of distinct peatland types, i.e., pristine and forestry-drained peatlands.
We will systematically characterize the impact of plant water use strategies on peatland productivity by combining 1) novel in-situ water stable isotope methods and state-of-the-art machine learning techniques for process understanding with 2) eddy-covariance carbon and water flux monitoring and multi-sensor remote sensing for vegetation and soil water dynamics. We will integrate our results in a process-based land surface model to provide improved predictions for future carbon emissions of boreal peatlands. The doctoral researcher will work with the extensive observations collected during the project. The observations include novel in situ plant and soil water isotope data, greenhouse gas exchange measurements, as well as ecosystem level eddy covariance measurements, collected at different peatland sites. The doctoral researcher will actively conduct and participate in observations.
The doctoral researcher will work as part of the new Academy of Finland fellowship PeatStress. The position will be located in the micrometeorology group at INAR. The work will be done in close collaboration with the Finnish Meteorological Institute, the German Aerospace Center (Munich, Germany) and University College Dublin (Ireland), including visits to our collaborators.
We are seeking a talented and motivated doctoral researcher (PhD student), who recently completed their MSc degree in the field of Meteorology, Environmental Sciences, Hydrology, Geography, Environmental Data Sciences, or similar areas. MSc students near the completion of their degree are also encouraged to apply.

Deadline : Open until filled

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
