PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher, Travel behaviour and well-being
The Spatial Planning and Transport (SPT) research group has a vacancy for a highly talented and motivated candidate to carry out a doctoral research project on everyday mobility, travel behaviour, and the experiential dimensions of sustainable transport. The doctoral project will contribute to the group’s research agenda on the relationships between mobility, well-being, accessibility, and equity, and how these shape individuals lived experiences of urban environments. The PhD project may focus on one or more of the following themes: (i) experiential and emotional dimensions of travel behaviour and travel satisfaction; (ii) equity, mobility justice, and the distribution of accessibility; (iii) the role of time, autonomy, safety, and mental load in shaping daily mobility; (iv) the social and behavioural mechanisms behind mobility transitions; and (v) innovative qualitative, quantitative, or mixed-methods approaches for capturing lived mobility experiences. While the primary geographical focus will be on Finland, the research may incorporate comparative or complementary cases from other countries as appropriate.

A Doctoral Researcher position to study condensation and interfacial phase change at nanoscale is available at the Soft Matter and Wetting (SMW) group, Department of Applied Physics (School of Science) at Aalto University. We are looking for an enthusiastic doctoral researcher to experimentally investigate condensation processes at surfaces with molecular precision. The work focuses on developing advanced methods for controlling wetting and nucleation, combining cutting-edge surface engineering with high-resolution experimental techniques. Potential applications span from energy-efficient heat exchangers and water-harvesting surfaces to antifogging and anti-icing coatings.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral and Master’s theses on Advanced Marine Structures
The Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering is a community of approximately 300 staff members, including 30 tenure-track professors, dedicated to researching, teaching, creating, and developing solutions to address society’s needs. Key research areas include marine and arctic technology, energy technologies and systems, mechanical systems and mechatronics, as well as materials, manufacturing, and product development. We are now seeking early-stage researchers to conduct their Master’s or Doctoral theses at Aalto University’s School of Engineering, within the Department of Energy and Mechanical Engineering. To devise control techniques for high performance and accuracy To reduce development costs for varying types of the heavy-duty boom To alleviate the need to develop high fidelity simulators for all product series To utilize existing datasets with new products and when existing products change during operation
The Doctoral Researcher is expected to focus on research on applying offline reinforcement learning to heavy machines. While there is recent work on offline reinforcement learning, work that utilizes offline reinforcement learning on heavy machines is scarce. To learn control for boom, learn contextual control from existing datasets for other kinds of booms and utilize the learned control with crude models of the original excavator eliminating the need for high fidelity simulation. The Doctoral Researcher is expected to gain broad knowledge of the state of the art in related fields, such as simulation, reinforcement learning, imitation learning.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher in Electrochemical Interfacial Study with Advanced Characterization
We are now looking for a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher to join the Department of Applied Physics at Aalto University. In this position, you will have the opportunity to explore interfacial phenomena in lithium-based electrochemical systems using state-of-the-art characterization techniques. Your work will contribute to understanding and designing the next generation of energy storage and conversion technologies, with impact on both green ammonia production and sustainable energy storage. In this position, you will contribute to pioneering research in lithium batteries and lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction (LiNR), with a particular focus on electrode-electrolyte interface/interphase.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher / Master’s Thesis Worker RingO – Piston Ring Dynamics Measurement for Understanding and Reducing Lube Oil Transport
Lubrication is essential in internal combustion engines to reduce wear and friction between sliding components, particularly the piston–liner system. Inevitably, some of the lubricating oil enters the combustion chamber, leading to carbon deposits, coke formation, particulate emissions, and, in the case of alternative fuels such as hydrogen, severe risks of pre-ignition. Minimizing oil ingress while maintaining sufficient lubrication has become a major engineering challenge.
Despite extensive research and simulations, oil transport mechanisms are still insufficiently understood. Current models lack proper validation data. This project focuses on developing novel measurement techniques to capture piston ring dynamics and lube oil transport with high temporal and spatial resolution. The work will directly contribute to improving existing simulation tools used in both academia and industry.
The project is part of the Wärtsilä–Aalto Industrial D.Sc. program, ensuring strong industrial relevance and access to unique experimental setups. You will be employed by the University, but your work will be conducted physically both at Aalto University campus and Wärtsilä Vaasa STH laboratory, to provide best-possible methodological support for your doctoral dissertation project.
