(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Research Associate (PhD Position) for the history, economy and law of the early islamic empire, in association with the “Romanislam Center for Comparative Empire and Transcultural Studies”

The professorship of Islamic Studies works in field of Early Islamic and Comparative Empire studies. The applicant will work within an interdisciplinary environment. The position requires an active participation and engagement in the activities of the professorship of Islamic Studies at the Asien Afrika Institute (https://www.aai.uni-hamburg.de/voror.html) and the RomanIslam Center for Comparative Empire and Transcultural Studies (www.romanislam.uni-hamburg.de), i.e. coordinating the websites, lecture series, workshops, research colloquia and further activities in the field.

The RomanIslam Center of Comparative Empire and Transcultural Studies convenes the disciplines of comparative empire and transcultural studies. The approach aims to compare transcultural acculturisation processes during the first millennium CE, or the so-called „Long Late Antiquity“, including the Early Islamic Period.

The successful applicant will concentrated on the political, economic, or cultural history of the early Islamic Empire and the period of the regional states. A successful PhD-thesis is expected in the field of administrative divisions, political structures, imperial religions versus local believes, economy, the transformation of cities, etc.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate for the Project “Formation and Evolution of Supermassive Black Holes”

We invite applications for one position in extragalactic astrophysics at Hamburg Observatory (Universität Hamburg) within the DFG-funded Emmy Noether Research Group led by Dr. Jan-Torge Schindler.

The group studies the formation of growing supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and their subsequent evolution in the early Universe. We aim to understand the processes by which SMBHs form, how they grow to their observed masses and how they influence the evolution of their host galaxies. Furthermore, we use actively growing SMBHs – quasars – as probes of the cosmic large-scale structure and the physical evolution of the intergalactic medium. In order to address these science questions, we use wide-area photometric surveys to discover new quasars at high redshift (using Euclid, LSST, data mining, machine learning, spectroscopy), conduct follow-up observations to characterise them (with optical, near-infrared, and sub-mm observations, spectroscopic modelling) and analyse their demographics (e.g., luminosity function, mass function using statistical inference).

We are looking for a candidate with a keen interest in the formation and growth of supermassive black holes in the first two billion years of cosmic time. The prospective candidate will focus their work on the selection, discovery, and characterization of high-redshift active galactic nuclei and quasars using wide-area survey data (e.g., from the Euclid Mission, the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory). With a particular interest in building a comprehensive census of the active SMBH population, we expect the candidate to lead the development of more inclusive selection methods using modern machine learning techniques.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate Searching for high-frequency gravitational waves

Research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.

The successful candidate will be strongly engaged in the experimental work in our Astroparticle Physics group which is part of the Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe”. A new experiment to search for MHz gravitational waves is currently in the prototype stage. You will be driving the design and optimization of the RF detector that will be operated inside a 14 T solenoid to search for both transient and stochastic gravitational waves. Your main contributions will be the installation and commissioning of the first detector design, reduction of noise contributions and running a matched-template search on real-time data for a first-science data run. You are also expected to contribute to the development of the next iteration of the experimental setup, optimizing both the design and the operation of a follow-up experiment. The research associate is expected to contribute to teaching at the level of 2.5 hours per week.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate (Postdoc) – Ecophysiology of non-vascular vegetation

The research associate will examine key physiological and ecological processes that determine the response of non-vascular vegetation to climate change. These include limiting factors of acclimation, and controls on dispersal and establishment. Non-vascular vegetation, such as mosses and lichens, are key for ecosystem functioning in many regions of the world, but the organisms are seldom represented in process-based based dynamic vegetation models (DGMVs) that are used for prediction of future vegetation patterns and functions at global scale. In particular, processes that may limit range shifts under climate change, such as dispersal and establishment, or mechanisms of acclimation to altered climate at the individual level, are missing in DGVMs.
The research associate will carry out fundamental work on the mechanisms behind these potentially limiting processes and their impacts on future distribution patterns of mosses and lichens. Based on a combination of advanced laboratory experiments on non-vascular ecophysiology and small-scale field experiments, the research will inform the next generation of DGVMs that represent mosses and lichens and their impacts on the Earth system
