PhD position summary/title: PhD Thesis – Therapy for Huntington’s Disease
The Fraunhofer Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology ITMP researches and develops innovative methods for the early detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases resulting from impaired immune system functions. We see ourselves as a strong partner to university medicine for the consistent translation of research findings into application, as well as to the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry for the application of the latest findings from science and research to specific projects.
One of our projects aims to innovate therapeutic advancements for Huntington’s disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disorder that affects the glymphatic and lymphatic systems, which are critical for removing the waste products of brain cells. Major symptoms include motor dysfunction, cognitive decline, and neurological issues. Currently, there is neither a known treatment to delay Huntington’s disease onset nor sufficient digital tools to evaluate the lymphatic system. Our mission is to collect comprehensive imaging data from these systems to develop a machine learning algorithm and thus create a versatile tool for preclinical therapeutic evaluation.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Mathematics ITWM is the world’s largest institute for industrial mathematics and is one of the top employers in Germany. In the Optimisation department, we use multi-criteria optimisation methods to develop innovative solutions for the diverse challenges faced by our customers from a wide range of industries. The results of our research work are of direct benefit to industry and society. Examples of this include the optimised irradiation of tumours and the planning of ground-mounted photovoltaic systems.
The simulation of production processes can make a decisive contribution to increasing energy and resource efficiency. When using simulations in practice, it must be taken into account that influencing variables such as energy and raw material prices are subject to stochastic fluctuations. To protect against such fluctuations, additional storage and buffers must be created, which lead to increased investment and operating costs.
Model-based, interactive decision support tools can highlight the interdependencies between increased resilience and increased costs and lead to the most balanced compromises possible.

In order to increase resource and energy efficiency in production, the Fraunhofer ITWM develops prediction models on the basis of which process optimisations are carried out. These models are calibrated by adapting model parameters to measurement data. The quality of this adjustment is a decisive factor for the quality of the prediction models. The quality of the fit depends not only on the measurement accuracy, but also on the design of the measurements. Typically, this experimental design task is addressed by linearisation in the model parameters. In process engineering and biotechnology, however, one often has to deal with strongly non-linear relationships. The subject of this work is the development and investigation of methods to take into account non-linear relationships in the design of experiments in such a way that a practical benefit for industrial application arises.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student »Parameter identification for soil-tool interaction simulation«
The area “Mathematics for Vehicle Development” works on modeling and simulation methods for the virtual product development of vehicles. One focus is the simulation of the interaction of construction and agricultural machinery with soil and material. We develop, implement and qualify new modeling and simulation methods and apply them in projects with leading industry partners.
In this context, we model and simulate soft soils based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM). In order to predict correct reaction forces with this method, it is essential to parametrize the simulation model accordingly. The parameterization step includes a calibration based on real measurements from soil mechanics laboratory tests such as so-called triaxial or adhesion tests.

With the branch of the Fraunhofer IGB in Upper Swabia/Biberach/Ulm, a new center for virus-based therapies will soon be created, funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Viruses and viral vectors represent highly innovative therapy options for diseases such as genetic defects or cancer that cannot be treated or can only be treated insufficiently. However, since virus-based therapeutics differ significantly from conventional drugs in terms of both composition and mode of action, completely new methods for their biotechnological production and for proving their function and efficacy have to be developed. Exactly this strategy is pursued by the Virus-Based Therapies branch office, which is located in the BioPharma Cluster South Germany and strengthens the solidarity between basic research at the University of Ulm and University of Applied Sciences Biberach as well as industrial application.
