(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Employment as PhD student in Medical Science

Cancer evolves over time and space, with subclones often acquiring new mutations that drive tumour growth and resistance to treatment. In this project, you will leverage large-scale single-cell genomics to uncover the clonal and mutational features that underpin tumour evolution. By integrating data from primary patient samples and experimental models, you will predict evolutionary trajectories and identify novel targets for precision medicine, aiming to enhance treatment responses and improve long-term survival in cancer patients. You will have the opportunity to learn and develop novel computational workflows for cutting edge single-cell genomics technologies and contribute to the advancement of precision medicine in oncology.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a passion for advancing scientific knowledge. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in data analysis, excellent problem-solving skills, and the ability to thrive in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.

Deadline : 31 Jan 2025

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in material science – Soft electronic solid-state cooling

Air conditioning currently accounts for 10 % of global electricity use and is one of the major drivers for global growth in electricity demand and the International Energy Agency (IEA) has therefore identified cooling technology as a key area for reducing emissions and climate change. Vapor compression refrigeration systems are today dominating the market, but they are associated with several issues including cost, efficiency, safety, greenhouse gases, and space. This project aims at developing an alternative cooling technology based on soft electronic solid-state cooling. The combination of soft electronics and polymeric caloric materials will be explored and developed, with the aim of substantially improving the efficiency and adiabatic temperature change in polymeric caloric materials. The project includes a wide range of activities from material and conceptual development to device design, fabrication and characterization. The PhD studies will include laser processing of materials and components in a cleanroom facility, together with the characterization of electrical/mechanical material properties and device performance. The work will be performed in a highly collaborative research environment and closely with Assistant Professor Aiman Rahmanudin from the Soft Electronics group

Deadline : 31st of January 2025

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Mathematical Sciences

Project 1: Robust optimization for treatment planning of radiotherapy. Radiotherapy is a common modality for cancer treatment and mathematical optimization is an important tool for treatment planning. There are several uncertainties, for example regarding tumour contours, and this project aims at developing mathematical models and algorithms to take uncertainties into account and mitigate the effect from them. Our group has ongoing cooperations internationally and nationally and with industry.

Project 2: Optimized production planning for hydropower plants. In close collaboration with the R&D department at Vattenfall AB, the project aims at extending the currently used optimization models for planning the hydropower production in Sweden. The project will focus on introducing stochasticity into the existing models, hence exploring the area of robust and stochastic optimization. Among other things, such stochastic models enable more accurate forecasts and allow for seasonal planning with expected market prices.

Project 3: Advanced decision making under uncertain data. The project aims to protect the operation of modern power systems against the effects of uncertain data, that occur due to natural uncertainties, such as fluctuations in wind and solar power, or human-made uncertainties, e.g. cyber-attacks. To this end, we explore the mathematical areas of distributional robustness and the interplay between AI and optimization, and collaborate with the power system unit at RISE – the Research Institutes of Sweden in order to ensure the practical impact of potential project outcomes.

Project 4: Statistical modelling and predicting cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicity. The project aims to develop statistical and mathematical models for predicting and identifying risk factors for cancer treatment-related cardiovascular toxicity (CTR-CVT) among child, adolescents, and young cancer survivors by using and comparing real-world clinical data from large longitudinal datasets. Machine learning techniques and modern (multivariate) statistics for big data will be used to gain insights into contributing risk factors for CTR-CVT.

Deadline : 29 January 2025.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Medical Science

As a PhD student, you will participate in the project: Predictive markers for chemotherapy-induced toxicity in childhood cancer. The goal will be to find genetic prediction models to be able to predict which childhood cancer patients have a high or low risk of toxicity in childhood cancer. Preliminary the doctoral project involves collecting clinical data on the effects of childhood cancer treatment, bioinformatically handling sequence data and developing prediction models, as well as conducting Single Cell RNASeq studies and potentially HiCap studies.
