PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate Computational modeling of cAMP signaling in the context of Alzheimer’s disease.

The School for Mental Health and Neuroscience (MHeNs) and the Institute for Technology-inspired Regenerative Medicine (MERLN) at Maastricht University in the Netherlands together with the BIOMED institute at Hasselt University in Belgium invite applications for a PhD position. The PhD student will perform cutting-edge research in computational modeling methods applied to cAMP signaling in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. Nearly 50 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the leading cause of dementia. The progression of AD coincides with neurodegeneration and memory loss. Only five treatments have been approved for AD therapy, all of which have limited efficacy and severe side effects, including nausea, vomiting, and even swelling of the brain. Thus, alternative drug targets within neuronal cells should be considered. At the subcellular level, we have previously shown that the second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) signaling is important to consolidate information into memory. In addition, an association was found between increased phosphodiesterase 4D (PDE4D) expression, a specific cAMP degrading

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in the field of peripheral nerve and immune cell interactions within a 3D in vitro oviduct model

The PhD Candidate will engage in the development and assessment of a humanized 3D in vitro platform that combines peripheral neurons with innate and adaptive immune cells. This is within the context of an in vitro oviduct model, looking at neuro-immune interactions as this tissue responds to infection and damage, with the prospective of investigating peripheral neuron-immune interactions within other tissues. The student will engage in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culture, neural differentiation, and immune cell differentiation and culture. Other activities include applying biofabrication technologies to create 3D in vitro environments and fluidic culture devices, the application of different biochemical and molecular assays to monitor immune response and the onset of fibrosis, and a particular focus on applying (multiphoton) microscopy to visualize dynamic cell behaviour within 3D cell culture platforms. The candidate will have a proven outstanding record to be part of an exceptionally skilled team that is being assembled thanks to recent European funding secured by the department. The work will suit highly ambitious candidates, who like to solve problems, and are at ease with timely deadlines, who like a fast-paced, but friendly and collaborative international environment with new challenges and opportunities for growth. The candidate is expected to disseminate the results through publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at international conferences.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Full-time PhD candidate interested in Health Economics

For patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy who are not eligible for (re)operation, there is a pressing need to improve minimally invasive curative treatment. This comes with the benefit of improved clinical (seizure) outcomes for this under-served population (currently dependent on palliative therapies), reduced treatment risk, improved quality of life and lower societal costs. To achieve this goal, an innovative artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted clinical intervention planning suite by seamlessly integrating available technologies based on multimodal brain imaging and invasive electrophysiological recordings of different brain regions will be developed. To investigate this topic, NWO has granted the project called ‘’AI-assisted 4D cortical assessment for Minimally invasive treatment of EPILEPSY (AIM@EPILEPSY)’’. We are looking for a PhD Candidate who will investigate the effects, the societal costs as well as the cost-effectiveness of this new AI-based treatment for drug-resistant focal epilepsy patients.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in particle physics (theory)

Beauty quarks are promising tools to perform powerful precision tests of the Standard Model of Particle Physics. These tests require to match the wealth of experimental data currently available with precise theoretical predictions. This requires understanding the nonperturbative long-distance effects. In this project, we will pursue this challenging task. Specifically,

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Trustworthy Conversational AI using FAIR Data and Services

We are seeking a highly qualified PhD candidate to join our research team and pursue groundbreaking research in the field of Conversational AI. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing new techniques and methodologies to enhance the accuracy, precision, and trustworthiness of conversational AI systems. The research will focus on methods and frameworks for knowledge integration, knowledge graph construction, autonomous service interaction, neurosymbolic reasoning and explanation, and human-AI collaboration. You will be part of one of the 17 new ICAI labs, named GENIUS (Generative Enhanced Next-Generation Intelligent Understanding Systems) consisting of 5 PhD students, who will collaborate to create human-AI knowledge engineering systems to support collaborative knowledge synthesis, integration of distributed knowledge, knowledge-graph and services powered generative AI, neurosymbolic reasoning, and hybrid human-AI ethics. The GENIUS lab will bring together two of the strongest groups on human-AI knowledge engineering in the Netherlands (UM and Delft), with industry partners DSM and kickstart.ai, to develop effective and trustworthy generative AI technologies in a variety of contexts including personalized medicine, food system innovation and supply chains.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate The value appraisal of high-value artworks

The main research question of your PhD project is how does high-value art get appraised? This involves the following key dimensions: which individuals and organisations are involved in appraisal processes? Which devices and techniques do they deploy in appraising art? Which individuals and organisations commission appraisals and for which purposes (e.g. tax filings, insurance, accounting, or financial assetization)? In addressing these questions, your research will aim at 1) mapping the (networks of) actors and the factors of valuation and revaluation processes and practices, and 2) understanding the authoritative norms and forms of appraisal expertise. In this four-year academic position, you will conduct research leading to a final dissertation. You will work with the supervisors, as well as with the greater PRICELESS consortium to achieve project goals and produce project outputs. You will also participate in PRICELESS consortium events, outreach activities, and research meetings. The PRICELESS consortium consists of a large group of both public and private partners, allowing for a mutually beneficial networking and research experience. A percentage of your time may be dedicated to gaining teaching experience.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate Risk and vulnerability in the assetization of expensive pre-owned watches

As PhD researcher with PRICELESS, you will be investigating the value appraisal and pricing of expensive (pre-owned) watches, focusing on online marketplaces and assetization platforms and their relationships with traditional jewellers and smaller (pre-owned) watch retail businesses in the Netherlands. Whether new or pre-owned, large volumes of expensive watches sell and resell for prices barely scraping the applicable reporting thresholds for (cash) payments. However, there are also many instances of watches that are much more expensive than the reporting thresholds, and—similar to art collections (the focus of another PRICELESS PhD position) entire watch collections as well as highly valued individual timepieces can now be assetized financially, which poses risk factors for subversive crime. A specific focus of this PhD project is on the advertisement and increasing use of digital value appraisal technologies online (e.g. through photographs), as well as on the development and use of new online escrow payment services, consumer credit and lending services (including in foreign and crypto currencies), and financial products based on fractional ownership. This will include 1) mapping the (networks of) actors and the factors of valuation and revaluation processes and practices and 2) understanding the authoritative norms and forms of (technological) appraisal expertise. Two primary concepts within this PhD project will be the concepts of risk and the concepts of vulnerability, which will inform the theoretical framings of this work package.
