PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Data-Driven Time-Series Analysis

We are looking for a creative and curious PhD candidate to explore novel approaches for analyzing and visualizing complex signals. You will help develop new methods that transform how we work with data from biomedical devices, audio recordings, or industrial sensors. These signals often contain subtle patterns or irregularities, and your research will focus on uncovering them through smart mathematical techniques.

You will be part of a supportive and experienced research team that brings together expertise in signal processing, mathematical modeling, and systems analysis. Together, we will study how to embed signals in ways that help us identify structure, dynamics, and meaningful patterns, especially when the data is noisy, incomplete, or nonlinear.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate on Health Data Governance and Legal Adaptation in the Netherlands and the EU

Health data is deeply personal, but it also holds immense societal value. It impacts how we understandand treat medical conditions, design and govern health care, protect rights, and drive innovation. The governance of health data in the EU is equally multi-faceted. It involves multiple layers of national and EU law, including recent legislative developments governing digitalization and data. While this emerging legal framework is designed to enhance healthcare, protect privacy and promote innovation, its realworld implications are not as straightforward. Healthcare providers are faced with the challenge of providing healthcare amidst both rapid advancements in digital health and the complex web of EU and national regulations governing digital technologies, data, healthcare, and medical practice.

In this PhD project, you will investigate how healthcare providers in the Netherlands and other EU member states are navigating digitalization healthcare within this complex legal landscape with a focus on health data governance. Your research will explore what organizational strategies and compliance mechanisms are being used and what barriers are providers encountering when balancing individuals’ rights to privacy with the right to receive high-quality, data-driven care? You will address these questions using both empirical legal methods and doctrinal and comparative legal analysis to understand how health data governance impacts healthcare delivery and patients’ rights. By examining whether some implementation difficulties stem from deeper structural misalignments between national and EU law, the research also aims to generate actionable insights into how Dutch law may need to evolve structurally in light of EU developments and digitalization in the health sector, and where practical implementation can be improved through policy, training, or institutional design.

You will be part of a cross-disciplinary team at Maastricht University’s Faculty of Law, the Maastricht law and Tech Lab, and MUMC+, contributing to a project that bridges health law, technology, and policy.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate on the Psychological Consequences of Working Under Algorithmic Management

The increasing use of algorithmic technology supporting the organization and execution of work is rapidly changing both workers’ and managers’ roles, tasks, and experiences. One of such applications is algorithmic management, which refers to the use of programmed algorithms to perform managerial functions, such as task assignment, target setting, performance monitoring, and decision-making regarding rewards or penalties. For instance, package delivery drivers work under varying degrees of algorithmic management, as an algorithmic system sets their daily targets, plans their routes, and monitors their driving behavior. This technological advancement can have substantial advantages, such as increased efficiency and reduced costs, supported decision-making, and inclusivity. However, depending on how algorithmic management is implemented and used, it may also affect the power dynamic between the employer and employee, with employers having increasingly comprehensive means to control employees’ behavior.

This 4 year PhD project investigates the conditions under which algorithmic control fosters feelings of powerlessness among employees, and aims to uncover why this may be the case. Moreover, we will examine factors that may mitigate these effects in order to eventually be able to offer practical advice to organizations who aim to ethically and sustainably implement such systems. Planned methodology includes survey studies (cross-sectional, longitudinal, and experience sampling) as well as experimental designs conducted both online and in laboratory settings.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate on the development of new, interlocking sustainable and circular business models

You will participate in the exciting multi-disciplinary project ‘Accelerating the Circular Transition’ (ACT!). ACT! develops a systemic approach to accelerate the fair transition to a circular society in The Netherlands (and beyond). It will co-create a toolbox, including shared visions of a circular society (with societal wellbeing at the centre), simulation models, and an integrated approach to manage this complex transition. For this, the consortium exists of a large variety of scientific researchers (from different disciplinary backgrounds) in combination with stakeholders from all parts of the Dutch society, from (national, regional and local) government to industry, and local NGO’s.

The Maastricht Sustainability Institute (MSI) at the School of Business and Economics of UM is one of the partners in ACT!. A key challenge in the circular transition is to establish circular value chains that are composed of interlocking circular business models. The primary objective of the PhD position at MSI is to develop actionable insight on how such value chains can be facilitated to emerge in the context of wider efforts (from civil society and government) to accelerate the circular transition. In the course of the project you will work together with researchers at other universities that are partners in ACT!.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate for the project: “Food systems education”

As a PhD candidate in this project, your research will explore how knowledge about food and food systems is created, circulated, and contested across a range of educational settings. You will investigate the role of both, formal education (e.g. school curricula and university programmes) and informal modes of learning (e.g. food literacy campaigns, activist-led movements, and social media narratives). Your research will ask critical questions about whose knowledge is legitimised or marginalised, who is positioned as the educator or learner, and how education can foster more inclusive, reflective, and action-oriented approaches to food systems transformation. You will also explore how inter- and transdisciplinary pedagogies can be meaningfully embedded in food systems education. Empirical work may be grounded in regional, cultural, or institutional settings of your choice, in discussion with the supervisory team.
