PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Hardware Security of Symmetric-Key Ciphers
Among symmetric-key algorithms, low-latency ciphers are specifically designed to minimise the delay in processing data, making them particularly suitable for applications like memory encryption or pointer authentication. For such ciphers it is essential to design countermeasures that introduce minimal time overhead.
The goal of this project is to investigate countermeasures for symmetric-key ciphers with limited impact on performance. This includes investigating the physical security of their hardware implementations by analysing their susceptibility to side-channel attacks and/or fault injection attacks. The challenge lies in finding a trade-off between security and performance, ensuring that the proposed countermeasures have minimal impact on the overall efficiency of the hardware.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics: Development of Dual Free Electron Laser Spectroscopy
The free electron lasers (FELs) at HFML-FELIX are versatile and highly sought-after sources of intense picosecond light pulses, useful for investigating dynamic processes in matter. Your research project will focus on designing and testing a new type of optical experiment using two synchronised FELs in a novel operation mode currently being commissioned at HFML-FELIX. This set-up aims to simultaneously use infrared and THz light to explore fundamental dynamic processes in solids that were previously inaccessible. Our FELs provide short intense pulses of radiation in the whole spectral range of low-energy physics covering the full quasiparticle spectrum from magnons and phonons to Cooper pairs and polarons.
Deadline : 02 March 2025
(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Algebraic Topology
The Department of Mathematics at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands) is seeking two outstanding and highly motivated PhD candidates to work on PhD projects in homotopy theory.
One of the two positions will be under the primary supervision of Dr. Magdalena Kedziorek and the other the primary supervision of Dr. Steffen Sagave. Each position is funded for 4 years and has a light teaching load (10%). You will be encouraged to participate in relevant conferences, workshops and seminars, and to communicate your findings through publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Deadline : 10 March 2025
(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Neural Mechanisms of Imagery and Perception at the Donders Centre for Cognition
Are you fascinated by how the brain balances perception and imagination? You will help explore cutting-edge questions about neural processes using techniques like fMRI and EEG. Shape the future of cognitive neuroscience while advancing your career in a collaborative research environment!
The Donders Centre for Cognition (PI group of Prof. M. Peelen) is looking for a PhD candidate to address these questions. You will use neuroimaging methods (fMRI, EEG) and behavioural experiments to investigate how the human brain combines imagery and perception, and how people differ in this ability. You will also have the possibility to investigate the neural mechanisms of switching attention between internal and external representations, and how healthy aging affects this process. The specific projects you will work on depend on your skills and interests; your creative input is appreciated.
Deadline : 23 March 2025

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Experimental Astroparticle Physics
The most energetic particles in the universe are ultra-high-energy cosmic rays, subatomic particles with measured energies up to 1020 eV. To address major questions about their nature, origin and interaction, the Pierre Auger Observatory, the world’s largest observatory, has been upgraded. You will enhance the performance and analyse the data of the 1600 recently installed radio antennas.
Deadline : 16 February 2025
(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Molecular Mechanisms of Motor Neuron Degeneration
We are recruiting a PhD candidate who will work independently on mouse genetics projects. Your main project will involve investigating the role of the skeletal muscle in ALS associated with mutations in TDP-43. You will use mouse genetic and viral gene transfer approaches, and evaluate the disease course of model mice using motor behavioural analysis and electromyography (EMG). Furthermore, neuropathological analysis will involve immunohistochemistry, fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH), and confocal and super-resolution imaging. You will use state-of-the-art in vivo non-canonical amino acid tagging (NCAT) to evaluate protein synthesis, as well as molecular biology, biochemistry, and next-generation sequencing, including single-nuclei sequencing. In addition, you will have the opportunity to contribute to other ongoing projects in the lab, for example studying the molecular pathogenesis of CMT peripheral neuropathy associated with mutations in tRNA synthetases, following up on our published work (e.g. Zuko, Mallik et al, Science, 2021). You will have the opportunity to collaborate with a senior postdoctoral researcher who will provide practical/experimental guidance. You will get some exposure to teaching in Master’s courses, and you will have the opportunity to collaborate with and supervise Bachelor and Master’s students.
Deadline : 16 February 2025
