(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Using artificial intelligence to improve a real-world mental health crisis helpline service
In this exciting PhD research opportunity, the PhD researcher will work closely with the Public Health Agency (PHA) to analyse Lifeline, Northern Ireland’s crisis response helpline. The PhD researcher, with a background in data analytics and/or statistics from a psychology or computer science background, for example, will analyse Lifeline service call data to identify patterns in caller behaviour and counsellor responses. There will also be an opportunity to trial real-time service performance dashboards and explore options for modernisation of the service, for example to experiment in the use of generative AI for chatline response generation. These insights will help guide PHA in preparing for a transition to the Encompass system.
The PhD researcher will spend around 3 months at the PHA premises over the 3-year period. There will also be opportunities to facilitate face-to-face workshops involving Lifeline, PHA and Ulster teams members and others, and to identify the current challenges and opportunities in the development of this helpline, as well as new ideas and research questions that can inform the development and trial of new analytical components.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Novel lightweight aerospace materials under thermo-mechanical loading
This project will investigate the benefits of an Additive Manufacturing (AM), aka 3D-printed, mechanical component made of a novel lightweight composite material for aerospace or defence applications.
The study shall focus on the effect of the thermo-mechanical loading on the physical properties and on the structural strength and stiffness of a composite material. The aim is to develop a novel material as a substitute for a typical aluminium alloy in manufacturing a range of products of interest in the UK aerospace industry. This scholarship top-up provided by Thales UK Ltd. will provide an enhanced PhD experience over 4 years, by increasing the student stipend and allowing for other opportunities including an industrial placement, and in addition cover items such as travel and subsistence. This PhD studentship offers an annual non-taxable maintenance grant of approx. £19,500 (plus an additional annual stipend top-up of £5000).

PhD position summary/title: Integrative multi-omics approaches for exploring host-microbiome interaction and biomarker identification
This project aims to develop an innovative AI-based multi-omics integration framework for comprehensive analysis of the relationships between microbiome, host and environment and their causal role in biological processes by addressing the following key questions:
1. What is the impact of the microbiome and its functional activities on biological process?
2. How does the interplay between the microbiome and the host at a genetic level influence traits such as metabolism and gene expression?
3. Can artificial intelligence and machine learning provide insights and potential strategies to manipulate the microbiome-trait connections to achieve desired outcomes?

This full-time wet lab project aims to develop an environment-friendly integrated process technology for the production of nanocellulose fibres, lignin, and cellulase enzymes from agricultural wastes such as cereal straws (oat, wheat and other lignocellulosic substrates).

PhD position summary/title: Developing AI platforms for rapid diagnosis of adult and childhood blood cancer
The goal of this PhD project is to create AI and machine learning techniques to more accurately and quickly identify plasma cells in bone marrow samples to assist with diagnosing myeloma. The project includes three aims:
- Train AI and machine learning systems using data from about 200 previously collected bone marrow samples that include detailed information from five blood specialists.
- Analyse new bone marrow samples as they are obtained and compare the speed and accuracy of these AI tools with the assessments made by experienced specialists.
- Use insights from the research above and analyse the environment around the bone marrow cells (an aspect not currently considered in standard diagnostics) to develop a pilot AI tool for diagnosing and predicting outcomes for childhood leukaemia based on bone marrow samples

PhD position summary/title: An artificial intelligence approach to investigate neurodegenerative diseases in ageing; interdisciplinary project integrating nutrition, genetics, environmental science and data analytics
The global population is ageing rapidly, with the proportion of people over 60 expected to reach 2 billion by 2050. Neuropsychiatric disorders, such as dementia and Parkinson’s disease, are leading causes of disability among older adults. Over 50 million people currently live with dementia, a figure projected to triple by 2050, while Parkinson’s disease affects approximately 10 million people worldwide. Their combined social and economic burden necessitates urgent public health strategies to prevent or delay their onset.
Ageing and genetic predispositions, such as the Apolipoprotein E4 allele (linked to Alzheimer’s disease) and mutations in the α-synuclein gene (implicated in Parkinson’s disease), are major risk factors. In addition, modifiable factors, including lifestyle and environmental influences, play a crucial role. It is estimated that 40% of dementia cases are preventable. Dietary patterns, such as the Mediterranean and MIND diets, along with nutrients like B-vitamins, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids, have been studied for their potential in mitigating neurodegenerative diseases.
This interdisciplinary PhD project will utilise data from the Trinity-Ulster Department of Agriculture (TUDA) study, an extensive ageing dataset of over 5,000 adults aged 60+ in Ireland. The research will apply advanced Whole Genome Sequencing, biomarker analysis, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to explore the interactions between biological, genetic, and environmental factors in neurodegenerative diseases. By integrating these insights, the study aims to identify key risk factors and inform public health strategies to prevent neurodegenerative conditions and improve the health and well-being of older populations.

PhD position summary/title: AI for diabetes – enhancing diagnosis and personalised care
Diabetes is a growing global epidemic, with cases rising from 200 million in 1990 to 830 million in 2022, according to the WHO. Type 2 diabetes (T2D), which is predominantly lifestyle related, now affects almost 10% of the global population and is expected to rise exponentially over the next 20 years. Mortality rates from diabetes have been increasing since 2000, and gestational diabetes is also a growing concern, currently affecting around 1 in 20 pregnancies in the UK.
Preventing and detecting T2D early is essential to avoid additional complications, reduce long-term damage, and ultimately save lives.
Clincians are moving beyond a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach, seeking to better classify subtypes of T2D using readily available clinical parameters to deliver personalised care.
This project seeks to leverage AI to transform T2D care by combining heterogeneous datasets to deliver:
- improved diagnosis and prediction of disease progression,
- improved, personalised treatment options and
- better patient outcomes.
