PhD position summary/title: PhD-position in modeling the resilience of biodiversity in urban landscapes
We invite applications for a PhD position in the SPARC project: “Species Population Ecological Trajectories & Resilience in Global Cities”. This project explores urban-induced population ecological trajectories and is part of a larger effort to understand how urbanization impacts the evolutionary potential of species worldwide (BEEACON – Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, And Cities’ Operational Nexus, led by dr. Joscha Beninde).
SPARC uses data-driven spatial modeling techniques to quantify the impact of urban landscapes. The project involves modeling habitat suitability and connectivity using a combination of species distribution modeling and current-flow modeling. Species’ traits and metrics of urban affinity will be used to differentiate species- and city-specific drivers of trajectories. Further, a species-level index will be developed to summarize trajectories, specifying the risks or benefits associated with urban land uses. This project focuses on 50,000+ species of all terrestrial taxonomic groups in hundreds of cities globally.

PhD position summary/title: PhD: Generative AI’s Impact on Knowledge Work & Professions
The PhD student will conduct theoretical and empirical research on the (un)intended consequences of GenAI on group and organizational level (instead of taking an individual level lens, such as common in psychology), including studying themes such as GenAI’s impact on knowledge work practices, professionals’ interactions and relationships within the organization, developers’ and management responsibilities and organizational structures.
The PhD student will do field work during an extended period of time as “embedded researcher” (in-house of one or more organizations), which sometimes implies being full-time ‘in the field’ doing observations and interviews.
The PhD student will provide a modest contribution to the Department’s teaching programme, with the opportunity to obtain a basic qualification teaching certificate (shortened as “BKO”). And there is ample opportunity for collaborations with other PhD students on a similar topic, as part of the wider AI@Work Lab. Each works in a different organizational setting / industry. Options for a field setting for this project can be discussed, such as the healthcare industry, creative industry, or educational industry.

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD Positions in Statistical Genetics of Brain-Related Traits
The Complex Trait Genetics lab (www.cncr.nl/ctg/) headed by Prof Danielle Posthuma at the Center for Neurogenomics and Cognitive Research in Amsterdam (see www.cncr.nl) is seeking applicants for a Postdoc Position in Bioinformatics/Computational Biology. The successful candidate will be part of the BRAINSCAPES consortium, which is a 10-year nationwide collaboration funded by the Dutch Government (Gravitation Program, 2020-2030), and led from the department of Complex Trait Genetics. The main aim of BRAINSCAPES is to gain mechanistic insight into brain disorders by leveraging results from recent genetic discoveries, utilizing large-scale bioinformatic resources, and testing genetically informed hypotheses in experimental studies. The candidate will focus on generating GWAS results from multiple brain related traits and interpreting results in biological context. There are two PhD positions. Depending on the background of the candidate(s), these positions can have an accent on the statistical and computational part, the bioinformatic part of analyzing GWAS data. The candidate(s) will work in an enthusiastic team of PhD students and postdocs, with diverse backgrounds, including statistics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, psychology and stem cell biology.

PhD position summary/title: PhD: Adoption of functional agrobiodiversity and modelling ecosystem services
You will be part of a multidisciplinary project (FABforward) on various aspects of functional agrobiodiversity (FAB), funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The PhD student will mainly work on economics and ecosystem services of FAB adoption by farmers. The position involves working across multiple research institutes. At the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the PhD candidate will design and implement a survey and choice experiment aimed at assessing FAB adoption by Dutch farmers. The survey findings will provide input to the student’s work on natural capital models for FAB-related ecosystem services, and on applying these models in a spatially explicit way; this work will be mainly carried out at the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and Wageningen Environmental Research (WENR). The student will be supervised by Dr Mark Koetse and Prof. Pieter van Beukering from IVM, supported by RIVM and WENR staff.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Interactive Robot Learning
The position is embedded in the 10 year Hybrid Intelligence (HI) project, a collaboration between six universities in the Netherlands.
The Hybrid Intelligence centre (HI) aims at creating methods and systems that combine human and machine intelligence, expanding human intellect instead of replacing it. HI systems place humans and their values at the centre, changing the course of the ongoing AI revolution.
This project aims to endow learning robots with the ability to learn more efficiently with the help of human interaction at multiple levels of abstraction (e.g., task vs. motion level) as well as different types of teaching signals (demonstrations, corrections, evaluation, etc.). The candidate will collaborate closely with the robot-assisted surgery team of the HI consortium, including the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam.

The Department of Mathematics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam welcomes applications for a fully-funded, 4-year PhD position in applications of topology to the origins of life as part of the PRELIFE Consortium (www.prelife.originscenter.nl). The Department of Mathematics of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam welcomes applications for a fully-funded, 4-year PhD position in computional modelling of synthetic living systems within the Amsterdam Center for Dynamics and Computation. We are an inclusive, interdisciplinary group, and diversity and internationalism is at the heart of our research principles, as well as our teaching practice.
At the origin of life, chemical reaction networks of prebiotic compounds played an essential role. These networks likely began relatively simple but grew in complexity over time, forming dynamic molecular structures capable of essential functions of life such as self-replication, metabolism, and compartmentalization. Our understanding of how these functions emerged from prebiotic building blocks and their reactivity in different environmental conditions is only starting to unfold. While most biomolecules can now be synthesized under prebiotic conditions, organizing them into a self-sustaining, thermodynamically out-of-equilibrium living system poses a major challenge. This project aims to generate a synthetic living system that features multiple functions of life by modelling the emergence of metabolism and compartmentalization using a simple out-of-equilibrium peptide-based self-replicating system as a starting point. This position is part of the PRELIFE consortium.
We are looking for a candidate with a master’s degree in (applied) mathematics, (bio)physics, (bio)chemistry, biomedical / life-sciences or a related field with a strong interest in computational modelling. The project will entail programming (scripting, Python etc.), solving coupled differential equations and carrying out molecular dynamics simulations on high-performance super-computers.
