Summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
The Astronomy Unit at Queen Mary is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work with Dr Edward Gillen on the early evolution of planetary systems as part of the European Research Council (now UKRI Frontier) grant “Age-Enabled Exoplanet Science”. The successful candidate will work on determining the timescales and relative roles of key evolutionary processes in sculpting planetary system architectures and bulk planet properties. They will play a leading role in one or more of: (i) characterizing young transiting planet systems detected by TESS and PLATO (Dr Gillen leads the Young Stars and Planets Working Group in PLATO and has multiple Guest Investigator programmes with TESS), (ii) determining planet occurrence rates as a function of time (from 1 Myr – 10 Gyr), and (iii) testing the predictions of specific evolutionary processes with well-characterised sub-samples of young planetary systems (e.g. migration mechanisms and atmospheric mass loss processes). The successful candidate will be expected to both lead and contribute to journal publications, and will be encouraged to develop and pursue independent research programs according to their interests.

Summary/title: Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Associate in Health Data and Cancer Detection
We are seeking a Research Assistant or Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Cancer Early Diagnosis Unit where they will undertake research focussed on improving our understanding of cancer risk and developing novel models and tools to improve cancer early detection. The successful candidate will contribute to Cancer Research UK and NIHR funded projects, including studies using large healthcare datasets, such as CPRD, to improve prostate cancer, lung cancer and upper gastro-intestinal cancer detection. In addition to leading their own project, they will support more junior researchers in the preparation and analysis of data. The Research Associate will be supported by a multidisciplinary internationally renowned team with diverse expertise including in health data science, epidemiology, risk prediction, AI and clinical practice. They will be supported to develop their career and build their own grant or fellowship applications.

Summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available in Dr Guifen Chen’s lab in the Department of Psychology, School of Biological and Behavioural Sciences. Building on the pervious work from Dr Chen’s lab (Yang et al, Current Biology 2024), the project will explore the neural mechanisms that enable the brain to construct and update allocentric spatial maps from egocentric sensory cues – a fundamental process that allows organisms to navigate the world. Using state-of-the-art virtual reality techniques, the research aims to advance our understanding of spatial cognition and its disruption in neurodegenerative diseases.
The post is full-time, with an initial contract for 18 months. The primary responsibilities of the role are to design and carry out experiments, conduct data analysis, and write scientific reports. In addition, there is scope for supporting PhD students, and collaborating with other experimental and computational neuroscientists within and outside the UK. The initial funding is through a 3 year BBSRC grant, with the potential for extension subject to additional grant approval.
