(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral researcher, ERC GEOCLOUD project

The Digital Economic Security Lab is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher with a background in politics, law, economics, or related disciplines to work on GEOCLOUD: The Geopolitics of Cloud Computing, a European Research Council Advanced Grant project.

Outsourcing computation to cloud providers can be economically efficient while at the same time generating new systemic risks and dependencies that governments try to manage.

GEOCLOUD is concerned with mapping the changing geography of computational infrastructures and understanding how it is shaped by the interaction of technology companies’ business interests and states’ economic and security interests.

The project focuses on Europe and East/Southeast Asia, situated within the broader context of U.S.-China technological rivalry. It aims to contribute to international political economy, security studies, and related fields. The researcher will join a multi-disciplinary team led by Professor Vili Lehdonvirta, consisting of both computer and social scientists.

Deadline : 30.9.2025

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning Engineering [Academic Research Software Engineer]

This position will be similar to a postdoc, but with an emphasis on research infrastructure and technology rather than preparation for an academic career path.  You will be involved in research, but more focused on learning and improving how computing, workflows, and data are used in research than finding your own novel research results and publishing them.

You will work in a research group and be affiliated with Aalto Scientific Computing (ASC).  You’ll serve as an intermediary between the two.  Compared to the staff of ASC, you will be directly based in a research group, much more involved in day-to-day research, follow projects for a much longer period, and more involved in publications.  Compared to a typical academic position, you will have a joint affiliation with ASC and get extra training in research engineering.  There will be less emphasis on novel results for the sake of novelty, and more on applying and developing best practices in the way the research is done.

Deadline : 29.9.2025

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher for Experiments in Swarming Dynamics of Living Swimmers

We are looking for a skilled experimentalist who would perform technically challenging swimming force experiments with tiny living organisms using a micropipette force sensor (Backholm et al., Nature Protocols 2019 https://doi.org/10.1038/s41596-018-0110-x and Lara et al., arXiv:2503.21396 https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2503.21396)). In parallel with your experimental work, you would develop theoretical models in collaboration with our international collaborators. You would also develop advanced image analysis schemes to analyse the experimental data. Your focus would be to investigate the effect of nearby swimmers on the swimming dynamics of brine shrimps. You would be expected to take charge of your own research project, conduct your work with high scientific quality, and actively communicate your problems, mistakes, and scientific findings to the rest of the team. We help each other to succeed in making exciting new scientific discoveries.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researchers in Quantum Nanomechanics

This project aims to address one of the great unresolved challenges in physics: While quantum mechanics successfully describes low-energy phenomena, it is incompatible with general relativity which governs gravity and huge energies. The interface between these two has remained experimentally elusive, because only the most violent events in the universe have been considered to produce measurable effects due to the plausible quantum behavior of gravity. We aim at detecting gravitational forces for the first time within a quantum system. We use mechanical oscillators loaded by milligram masses and bring two such gravitationally interacting oscillators into nonclassical motional states. The initial phase of the project focuses on measuring the gravitational force between milligram-scale gold particles, representing a new mass scale showing gravitational forces within a system. This work is part of the ERC Advanced Grant project “GUANTUM: Probing the limits of quantum mechanics and gravity with micromechanical oscillators”.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in optomechanics with light-matter Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs)

The successful candidate is expected to lead the experimental effort with a team of PhD and master’s students and collaborate closely with theorists in the group. They will collaborate with our academic and industry partners worldwide and will have the chance to contribute to other relevant projects beyond fundamental research, e.g., optical computing with BECs. They expected to lead preparation of research manuscripts for publications in top-tier journals, coordinate submissions, and taking the role of corresponding author. Besides the expertise in experimental quantum optics, the candidate will acquire excellent training in grant writing and research leadership provided by Aalto University and at the MQO group level by contributing to research management and funding applications within the team.

About Aalto University, Finland –Official Website

Aalto University  is a university located in Espoo, Finland. It was established in 2010 as a merger of three major Finnish universities: the Helsinki University of Technology (established 1849), the Helsinki School of Economics (established 1904), and the University of Art and Design Helsinki (established 1871). The close collaboration between the scientific, business and arts communities is intended to foster multi-disciplinary education and research. The Finnish government, in 2010, set out to create a university that fosters innovation, merging the three institutions into one.

The university is composed of six schools with close to 17,500 students and 4,000 staff members, making it Finland’s second largest university. The main campus of Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, Espoo. Aalto University Executive Education operates in the district of Töölö, Helsinki. In addition to the Greater Helsinki area, the university also operates its Bachelor’s Programme in International Business in Mikkeli and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory in Kirkkonummi.

Aalto University’s operations showcase Finland’s experiment in higher education. The Aalto Design Factory, Aalto Ventures Program and Aalto Entrepreneurship Society (Aaltoes), among others, drive the university’s mission for a radical shift towards multidisciplinary learning and have contributed substantially to the emergence of Helsinki as a hotbed for startups.Aaltoes is Europe’s largest and most active student run entrepreneurship community that has founded major concepts such as the Startup Sauna accelerator program and the Slush startup event.

The university is named in honour of Alvar Aalto, a prominent Finnish architect, designer and alumnus of the former Helsinki University of Technology, who was also instrumental in designing a large part of the university’s main campus in Otaniemi.
