Dr. Krassioukov is a Professor in the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of British Columbia, the Associate Director of Rehabilitation Research for the International Collaboration on Repair Discoveries (ICORD), and a physician in the Spinal Cord Program at Vancouver Coastal Health’s GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. He is the past President of the American Spinal Injury Association (2019-2021). His laboratory is internationally recognized for its contributions to autonomic research. The Canadian group in the DarkLight collaboration has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral researcher to join us in a search for new bosons in the mass range from 10 to 20 MeV using the TRIUMF/ARIEL e-linac. The successful applicant will join a small international collaboration and be based at TRIUMF in Vancouver, BC. The brief and intense schedule for the DarkLight experiment means that this position provides a unique opportunity for a young postdoctoral researcher to participate in a particle physics experiment from the design stages right through data taking to a final result during their time at TRIUMF.

An early change in cardiac metabolism is considered a major culprit for diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). The metabolic shift in the diabetic heart includes reduced glucose consumption, and a switch to utilize more fatty acids for energy, a destructive adaptation implicated in cell death and DCM. The Rodrigues Lab is interested in examining the mechanism of how fatty acids are provided to the heart and how an excess can lead to cardiac disease. Appreciating this mechanism should allow the identification of novel targets for therapeutic intervention to prevent heart failure during diabetes. A full-time postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Brian Rodrigues, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC. The individual will be responsible for the design and execution of research projects involved in investigating the switch in cardiac energy supply (from glucose to fatty acid) following diabetes. Applicants must therefore have extensive knowledge and experience in various lab techniques to investigate cardiac metabolism, using animal modeling, cell culture (primary endothelial cells and cardiomyocyte isolation), molecular biology, and biochemistry. Applicants should have a PhD in pharmacology, biochemistry, or a related field with relevant experience. You will be expected to take the lead role in your projects, to publish manuscripts as a first author, and to present your projects and data at lab meetings, as well as local and international meetings. A high level of participation in a collaborative team setting is required, with a high level of self-motivation, excellent time management skills, ability to demonstrate creativity and sound judgment. Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills are preferred as the candidate is expected to work closely with graduate students. The candidate should demonstrate strong writing skills to ensure writing of quality scientific publications and grant applications. Preference will be given to those with a strong publication record. We are well-funded by our grants, and are looking for a dynamic and diligent addition to our group.

Repurposing clinically-approved drugs for alternate indications is a proven strategy to accelerate the development and approval of new treatments. Through conventional and advanced ‘omics approaches, we have recently identified an off-patent drug and demonstrated efficacy in multiple models of ischemia and reperfusion injury (eg. cardiac (MI/transplant), spinal cord perfusion injury, skin (pressure injury and thermal injury). Administration of the clinically-approved drug prevented superoxide generation, increased nitic oxide bioavailability, improved tissue perfusion, reduced inflammation and accelerated healing in models of cardiac, spinal cord and skin injury. Our research program spans basic molecular biology, biochemistry, and proteomics through to target validation, proof-of-concept in animal and human models, and collaborations with clinicians and industry. The Postdoctoral Fellow (PDF) will be responsible for conceiving, designing, and implementing pre-clinical studies to advance the development and novel formulations of this drug as well as playing a key role in intellectual property and commercialization. The position will provide a unique opportunity to join a CIHR-funded translational academic research lab, lead pre-clinical studies, gain entrepreneurial training, and collaborate with industry and leading academic collaborators at UBC and abroad.

We invite applications for a full-time post-doctoral position in the areas of genomic variant identification and comparative genomics. The research position will lead a computational effort to characterize the importance of large structural variants for plant genomes. Responsibilities include developing genomes/genomic data analysis, linking associated variants with functional knowledge, annotations and other key genomic features, and development of manuscripts; supervising duty might be assigned.

The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) is seeking a post-doctoral researcher in detrital zircon geochronology. The successful candidate will undertake a project relating the isotopic and geochemical compositions of minerals in modern rivers to the geology exposed in their catchments.  The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to integrate geological concepts related to sediment transportation within a source-to-sink system and detrital geochronology. Background and experience with laboratory analytical methods and/or numerical methods of analyzing multi-variate detrital data sets is also required. The ability to integrate additional data sets (such as microXRF or petrology) into a quantitative interpretive framework would be considered an asset, as would a background in coding. EOAS is a dynamic, inter-disciplinary Earth Sciences department, with research and teaching interests spanning the history of Earth and its functioning from the core to the stratosphere. The successful candidate will have completed their Ph.D. in a field closely related to the topics described above by the starting date and will be no more than 5 years from completion of their Ph.D. by the start date. This position has a 24-month duration and a salary of CAD$67,000.
