(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Researcher in transcriptomics of plant programmed cell death
A post-doctoral position is available at the University of Helsinki, Finland as a part of a recently funded Academy of Finland project “The role of cell specific signaling in plant defense and cell death”. In this project, we will develop methods to define the transcriptome at cell death lesions induced by treatments with air pollutant ozone. Further, new regulators of plant programmed cell death and plant defense to ozone pollution will be identified. We have previously generated extensive genetic resources and RNAseq data to understand plant global response to ozone, and in this project these will aid development of cell specific assays. (03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral or Doctoral Researcher in cell/vascular biology
The candidate most suitable for the position is expected to be enthusiastic about scientific research. The candidate should be able to demonstrate abstract thinking as well as the potential to develop and pursue a scientific project in the field of cell biology. He/she should have strong communication skills (English) and the ability to work in an international environment in an organized manner. Experience in cell culture, microscopy, image analyses, in vivo models and/or other related disciplines is considered beneficial. At the postdoctoral level, a successful candidate should have a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate biological subject and a demonstrated track record of peer-reviewed publications. For a post-doctoral researcher, the brutto salary is starting from 3500 euros/month, depending on previous qualifications and experience.
Deadline : 15.8.2022
(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher to Hematology Research Unit
The Hematology Research Unit Helsinki (HRUH) is a translational research group, led by Professor Satu Mustjoki, which aims at understanding the pathobiology of malignant blood diseases and chronic inflammation. In blood cancers, the responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors have been modest, and there is a significant need for more effective therapies and for better understanding individual resistance and response mechanisms (personalized medicine). In our ongoing projects we aim to discover more effective immunotherapies, and individual resistance and sensitivity mechanisms using unbiased functional screens at the single cell level (e.g. CRISPR-Cas9 screens, high-throughput drug sensitivity assays) and utilizing primary patient immune and cancer cells in the dynamic co-culture models.
Deadline : 14.8.2022
(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher, changes in microbial CUE and C stabilization under global change
The research focuses on the effects of climate warming on microbial CUE, community composition, and C stabilisation under global change. We work with translocated soils samples (north to south translocation within boreal forest zone in Finland, and from high altitude to low altitude sites along a Kenyan altitude gradient in the moist montane rain forest) to look at the effects of warming on functioning of microbial communities, soil C stocks and C stabilisation. Specific hypothesis about microbial processes and functioning of the “soil microbial C pump” will be tested in controlled conditions, by combining isotope methods to laboratory incubations. The research is part of Kristiina Karhu’s Academy of Finland funded Research Fellow project: “Unraveling the mechanisms of the soil “microbial carbon pump” – soil C sequestration under global change”.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Environmental Geochemistry and Coastclim centre
We are looking for a highly motivated and talented postdoctoral researcher to work in the Environmental Geochemistry group in collaboration with the new Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Research (Coastclim). The position is based at Department of Geosciences and Geography (Faculty of Science, Kumpula campus) and Tvärminne Zoological Station (Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences). The position is intended to strengthen expertise in sediment biogeochemistry and organic geochemistry, through carrying out innovative research into carbon dynamics in human-impacted coastal sedimentary environments.
Deadline : 5.8.2022
(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher / Doctoral Researcher in the Functional Cancer Genomics group
The goal of our research is to understand how cancers develop and spread, and how this knowledge could be used for the development of new approaches for therapy. We study how cancer mutations activate oncogenic programs and how these programs lead to cancer progression and metastasis. Specifically, our aims are to understand (i) how normal transcriptional programs are co-opted for carcinogenesis, (ii) how these programs interact with genetically activated oncogenic pathways, (iii) what the critical pro-tumorigenic mechanisms of cancer mutations are, and (iv) whether cancer-specific cellular programs lead to molecular vulnerabilities that could be exploited for cancer therapy and patient benefit. Our research combines experimental cancer models and human cancer data sets with state-of-the-art genomics (e.g. chromatin and transcriptional profiling), mechanistic analysis using various methods of genetic perturbation, and unbiased functional genetic screens (e.g. CRISPR/Cas9 screens), as demonstrated by our recent work (Patel et al. Nature 2022).

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website
The University of Helsinki is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.
As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.
The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.
Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
