(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Researcher on ‘Metaphysics, Ethics, and Epistemology of Risk’

Risk judgments play a pivotal role in human societies. By acting in the world we inevitably take risks and impose them on others. Risk is connected to normative practices. For instance, whether a war against a state suspected of sponsoring terrorism is morally justified depends in part on whether it minimizes the risk of future terrorist attacks. It is often proper to blame someone for imposing unnecessary risks on us, such as transporting hazardous materials without taking proper safety measures. Plausibly, whether one knows a proposition depends on how high the risk of forming a false belief is. But what exactly is risk, and why is it of normative significance?

In the research project ‘Metaphysics, Ethics, and Epistemology of Risk’ new insights about how we should understand risk are applied to a wide range of ethical and epistemological questions. The postdoctoral researcher’s work is expected to focus on ethical questions where the notion of risk can be utilized, such as ‘what ought we do under conditions of moral uncertainty?’, ‘does the risk value of a given event increase with its disutility?’, ‘should we be concerned about farfetched events which have catastrophic consequences?’, ‘can the kind of accidentality that is incompatible with morally worthy action be understood in terms of risk?’, and, ‘can we harm others merely by imposing risks on them?’

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher, Alternative Splicing Regulation in Human Diseases

We conduct data-driven research to understand the pathogenesis of human diseases, with a focus on metabolic disorders, such as obesity, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancers. In close collaboration with multidisciplinary researchers, we integrate biobank resources, clinical data, omics technologies, as well as novel computational approaches to uncover the cellular and molecular mechanisms driving disease development and progression. A key objective of our work is to develop advanced computational tools to dissect the role of alternative splicing in these diseases.

The postdoctoral fellows will work on computational method development and data analysis for bulk and single-cell omics data from human patient samples. Individuals with a strong interest and background in computational biology/bioinformatics are strongly encouraged to consider this opportunity. Our research is funded by the Research Council of Finland, Sigrid Jusélius Foundation, the Digital Precision Cancer Medicine Flagship (iCAN), and among others.

Deadline : 5.3.2025

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in the field of cancer data science

The advertized project focuses on implementing a hierarchical Variational Autoencoder (VAE) framework to integrate bulk multi-omics cancer data. Developed by the Kuijjer group to integrate multi-modal single-cell data, this framework incorporates biological data dependencies to model variability at both joint and data type-specific levels, providing insights into regulatory mechanisms. The research will leverage a large in-house dataset from iCAN, complemented by publicly available data, to examine transcriptomic dependencies on transcription factor abundance and/or somatic mutations. These efforts aim to enable pan-cancer subtyping and uncover regulatory processes contributing to cancer and cancer outcome.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in autophagy and metabolic homeostasis

We are seeking a talented postdoctoral researcher to identify and characterize novel regulators of autophagy and metabolic homeostasis. Building on our recent discoveries, the project will leverage state-of-the-art OMICs technologies, CRISPR screening, and advanced cell biology studies to identify and characterize adaptive homeostatic responses in novel disease models. These insights hold significant translational potential, particularly for pharmaceutical companies developing next-generation precision medicines targeting autophagy-related diseases. This is a unique opportunity to work at the interface of discovery and translational cell biology research in a well-resourced and collaborative research environment.

About The University of Helsinki, Finland – Official Website

The University of Helsinki  is a university located in Helsinki, Finland since 1829, but founded in the city of Turku (in Swedish Åbo) in 1640 as the Royal Academy of Åbo, at that time part of the Swedish Empire. It is the oldest and largest university in Finland with the widest range of disciplines available. In 2018, around 31,200 students were enrolled in the degree programs of the university spread across 11 faculties and 11 research institutes.

As of 1 August 2005, the university complies with the harmonized structure of the Europe-wide Bologna Process and offers bachelor, master, licenciate, and doctoral degrees. Admission to degree programmes is usually determined by entrance examinations, in the case of bachelor’s degrees, and by prior degree results, in the case of master and postgraduate degrees. Entrance is particularly selective (circa 15% of the yearly applicants are admitted). It has been ranked a top 100 university in the world according to the 2016 ARWU, QS and THE rankings.

The university is bilingual, with teaching by law provided both in Finnish and Swedish. Since Swedish, albeit an official language of Finland, is a minority language, Finnish is by far the dominating language at the university. Teaching in English is extensive throughout the university at master, licentiate, and doctoral levels, making it a de facto third language of instruction.

Remaining true to its traditionally strong Humboldtian ethos, the University of Helsinki places heavy emphasis on high-quality teaching and research of a top international standard. It is a member of various prominent international university networks, such as Europaeum, UNICA, the Utrecht Network, and is a founding member of the League of European Research Universities.
