Applications are invited for the position of a Research Fellow in Trapped Ion Quantum Computing in the Ion Quantum Technology Group in the Sussex Centre for Quantum Technologies at the University of Sussex. The position is part of the UK National Quantum Technologies programme and is concerned with the development of utility scale quantum computers capable of solving disruptive societal and industry challenges. Trapped ions are one of the most mature implementations to deliver practical quantum technologies. We have developed a unique approach for trapped-ion quantum computing that enables scaling to a large number of qubits. The approach couples scalable global microwave based quantum gate technology with fully integrated quantum computing microchip modules that can be linked together using fast electric field links. This position is part of a larger effort to develop and operate quantum computing solutions which scale to significantly larger system sizes. We currently operate 5 quantum computer prototypes in our lab and the position will focus on one or multiple of these experimental setups directed towards the implementation of quantum error correction, ion transport and quantum gate execution, raising gate fidelities, operation of multi-module quantum computing prototypes and the development of quantum computing microchips.

The Climate Science and Society group at the University of Sussex is seeking to appoint a highly talented and motivated researcher to join our project “strengthening Pastoral Livelihoods in the African Greater horn through Effective anticipatory action (PASSAGE)”. Funded through the Climate Adaptation and Resilience (CLARE) programme, the project aims to enhance operational early warning and anticipatory action systems for drought risk in pastoralist livelihood systems across Greater Horn of Africa to enhance climate-resilient and sustainable livelihoods, especially for the most vulnerable. In this exciting role you will be working with our academic, civil society, government, and business partners in the region and engage with a wide network of stakeholders. You will have the opportunity to apply your skills and develop novel approaches in analysing satellite-based earth observation data to monitor and forecast natural resources that are important to pastoralist communities in the region. The Experimental Particle Physics group at Sussex seeks to appoint up to two talented and creative researchers, with strong computational and experimental skills, to join Sussex’s vibrant research programme on Experimental Particle Physics. The application of more senior researchers is strongly encouraged. The posts focus on the implementation of efficient tracking strategies to the ATLAS experiment Phase 2 upgrade of the High Level Trigger, contributing in parallel to analogous R&D within the SWIFT-HEP inter-experiment project. The successful candidates will be expected to work on the development, deployment and benchmarking of High Level Synthesis FPGA algorithms for real-time Particle Physics applications, where the group has significant institutional commitments.  The posts are funded until June 1^st 2025. Extension beyond this date will depend on future funding opportunities. The Sussex ATLAS group has significant involvement in both the ATLAS Upgrade and the SWIFT-HEP efforts, and continuation will be considered depending on funding. Candidates are expected to hold, or be close to obtaining, a doctorate in experimental particle physics and to have a demonstrated track record of internationally recognised research at a large-scale collider experiment.

The post focuses on the study of indirect new physics signatures related to Heavy Flavour Physics and Lepton Flavour Universality Violation in beauty and top quarks. The successful candidate will be supporting the ATLAS Sussex Flavour Physics activities in collaboration with its faculty members and in synergy with other PDRAs. The primary focus will be on the exploitation of ATLAS Run 3 data in Flavour Physics, applying – besides traditional analysis techniques – novel machine learning techniques and technologies. The work will involve the use of early Run 3 and existing Run 2 data while in parallel establishing – and exploring as much as possible – approaches extendable to HL-LHC and future colliders efforts.

The Morgan Lab at the University of Sussex is seeking to appoint a highly talented and motivated Research Fellow to progress a 3-year Children’s Cancer & Leukaemia Group (CCLG) Little Princess Trust (LPT) research project grant targeting aberrant Wnt/b-catenin signalling in paediatric acute myeloid leukaemia (pAML). Specifically, this project will interrogate b-catenin interaction with RNA binding proteins (RBP) and RNA and how this impacts pAML cell growth/survival/chemosensitivity, with the aim of developing targeted patient treatments. The research focus of the group is centered around understanding the role of Wnt/b-catenin signalling in both normal haematopoiesis and AML. Candidates with practical experience in RNA-based methods (e.g. RIP, CLIP, in vitro transcription, polysome profiling etc) are highly desirable alongside competencies in the following molecular techniques below:

We seek a postdoctoral scientist with a strong background in RNA, molecular biology, and machine learning techniques who is capable of working as part of a small team as well as the ability to organise and direct their work within a larger collaboration.
