(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND/INTEGRATED PHD STIPEND IN INVASIVE INSECT ECOLOGY AND THERMAL ADAPTATION

A PhD stipend is available in invasive insect ecology and thermal adaptation. The background for the project is that the number of invasive species, especially invasive insects, being redistributed across the world, has been increasing due to both climate change and increased global travel and trade. Understanding how and why some species are successful invaders will be crucial for our ability to predict and mitigate the negative impacts of invasive insects on native biodiversity, human health, and food supply. The PhD candidate will merge eco-physiology, ecological modelling and insect biomonitoring using molecular techniques such as microbiome analysis, meta-barcoding and environmental DNA. Further, the role of interactions between insects, microorganisms and plants for insect fitness and invasion success will also be investigated. The position will include a combination of laboratory experiments and field work mainly in temperate regions but potentially also in Arctic or Antarctic regions. The candidate will participate in all aspects of the project including acquisition of data from the literature, experimental work, field work, molecular work, modelling, data analysis, writing etc. The project can to some extent be tailored to the candidate’s interests and expertise.

A relevant educational background within biology or biotechnology/molecular biology is an advantage. We seek a candidate with strong competences in ecology and molecular biology, excellent analytical skills, and proficiency in R(or equivalent). Experience within one or more of the following areas is advantageous: insect ecology, ecological modelling, meta-barcoding, eDNA or microbiome analysis. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory. The selected candidate will become a member of the growing Environmental Change and Adaptation research group within the Section of Bioscience and Engineering. As part of the PhD study, it is expected that the candidate spends 4-6 month abroad, likely in laboratories of our collaborators in Australia, France, or the USA. Field work might include a period in Antarctica.

The PhD student will follow courses according to the university’s PhD program. The candidate is also expected to engage in teaching within topics such as ecology, ecophysiology, ecosystem modelling, molecular biology, and environmental microbiology and be involved in project-based student supervision within the section. All educational programs at Aalborg University are based on Problem Based Learning, with projects making up half the teaching at all semesters. For more information seewww.en.bio.aau.dk

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND – MARIE-SKLODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS DOCTORAL NETWORK “REWORLDING”, RECONNECTING FOR SUSTAINABLE WORK PLATFORMS

The project will investigate how to design and establish physical spaces, legal, economic, and technological services, capable of promoting the emergence of platform cooperatives in the city of Aalborg. That implies co-designing, together with the cooperative movement and marginalised social groups as unemployed graduates or international workers, strategies that can allow the establishment of platform cooperatives at the local level.

More specifically, the objectives of the project are:(1) Perform Participatory Action Research(PAR) with the goal of establishing the Future Jobs Lab– an umbrella initiative supporting the emergence of different platform cooperatives in Aalborg.(2) Detect and articulate the specificities of reconnecting physical spaces, legal, economic, and technological services, in a way that is capable of supporting marginalised groups, as unemployed graduates or migrants, in building their local platform cooperatives in a variety of service and industrial sectors.(3) Co-design and test strategies for prototyping future work platforms in their institutional, physical, and technological elements.

The expected results include:(1) PAR report on co-designing the Future Jobs Lab.(2) Collection and description of strategies and design capabilities for sustainable work platforms.(3) Prototypes of digital, physical, and institutional elements for sustainable cooperative work platforms.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND – MARIE-SKLODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS DOCTORAL NETWORK “REWORLDING”, RETRACING SUSTAINABLE PLATFORM COOPERATIVE MODELS

The project will focus on promoting the emergence of a platform cooperative in the city of Aalborg, relying on the adaptation of existing technologies(e.g. coopcycle.org in the delivery sector). By involving university graduates and migrant workers, the initiative allows tracing the network of support needed for the formation of platform cooperatives. This allows putting at the centre of co-design activities organizational models for platform cooperatives.

More specifically, the objectives of the project are:(1) Support, through Participatory Action Research(PAR) in the city of Aalborg, the establishment of a platform cooperative to support the sustainable transition of the delivery sector, e.g. food, relying on existing technologies(e.g. coopcycle.org/en/) and involving university graduates and international workers.(2) Trace and document the more-than-human network involved in establishing a platform coop with a strong local orientation, beginning with the public institutions supporting the establishment of the cooperative.(3) Propose co-design strategies to identify ways of collecting start-up capital and developing business and technology models to maintain and develop the cooperative.

The expected results include:(1) PAR report on creating and launching a sustainable, platform-based cooperative within a local community.(2) Collect, describe and analyse emergent practices in delivery, income-generation and relations between the cooperative, support space, local community and the technology design, development, and use.(3) Co-design infrastructures for business and technology models to maintain the platform cooperative.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND FOR RESEARCH IN CO-CULTURES OF BACTERIA AND YEAST

A PhD stipend is available in the area of microbial co-cultivation of bacteria and yeast for improved and alternatively biotechnologically produced food products. Novel and advanced monitoring tools allow a better track of single cells and thus, a growth monitoring of individual species. These methods shall be applied to better understand the interaction of individual cells with their growth environment. The knowledge gained shall be used subsequently to control the growth of individual species in bioreactor cultivations. In order to achieve this, also a better knowledge of relevant interactions between single cells and species is required when grown together. This knowledge shall be gained under dynamically changing cultivation conditions, e.g. under cell stress. The data can then ideally be used to set up growth, and finally population balance models, in which the population dynamics are known based on the experimental measurements. The candidate will participate in all the mentioned aspects including acquisition of data from literature, data analysis, and publishing own data according to a publication plan.

A relevant educational background within microbial biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, food technology or similar is necessary. We seek a candidate with strong competences either in wet-lab work and metabolite analysis or population balance modelling. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory.
