PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Electronic Systems with focus on electromagnetic compatibility in electrified airport environment
The environmental effect of flight on climate change has become a major driving force for the development of electric aircraft, where the focus currently is on safety, battery technology and development of drive systems. Today’s certified electric airplanes carry a maximum of two passengers for 100 kilometers, but development is progressing quickly. The Swedish company Heart Aerospace is developing a hybrid aircraft for 30 passengers to be in service by 2028, and at Skellefteå airport pilot training is being conducted with the electric aircraft Pipistrel Velis Electro. Associated charging infrastructure is expanded with charging stations, solar parks and energy storage. At Luleå University of Technology, our group is involved in driving the area forward via projects and collaborations with authorities and local actors.
The ongoing development has actualized the issue of electromagnetic interference (EMI) and compatibility (EMC) in the airport environment. Electric aircraft and chargers, like many other electronic systems, are based on switching power electronics. In addition to intended fundamental tones, this generates a considerable amount of harmonics which can leave the system as radiated disturbances. Effects from these disturbances in a future introduction of electric aircraft and chargers are still largely unmanaged and unknown. The project will contribute to the introduction of electric aircraft by studying electromagnetic interference from electric aircraft and its connection to airport systems. Especially the airport’s system for communication, navigation and surveillance (CNS) in the frequency range 100 – 400 MHz is of interest.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Cybersecurity, Blockchain and Secure Access Control
In the autumn of 2024, Luleå University of Technology will start several projects in the area of cyber security in collaboration with other universities, small and medium-sized companies, large companies, municipalities, regions and authorities such as the Swedish Pensions Agency, the Swedish Armed Forces, etc. You will work within a newly started team that operates in an extremely current and fast-moving area. Specifically, this recruitment refers to work with a focus on blockchain and secure access control.
We are looking for two motivated and innovative PhD students to join our research team to develop cutting-edge solutions that integrate the Internet of Things (IoT), digital twins, and blockchain technologies to improve safety, security, and reliability in high-risk industries such as energy, healthcare, transportation, and manufacturing. You will be involved in a multi-disciplinary project as a focus on conducting experimental research, developing prototypes, publishing research articles and collaborating with international partners. In addition, today’s systems and networks face many challenges, including centralized points of failure, data breaches, insider threats and lack of transparency. Traditional access control systems often rely on centralized servers or databases, making them vulnerable to the failure of a central node and potential hacking attempts. The work aims to meet these challenges by utilizing blockchain technology. We are looking for a highly motivated and innovative PhD student to join our research group and contribute to developing a decentralized, transparent and tamper-proof framework for access control.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Cybersecurity, Secure IT/OT/IoT and Cloud Security
Our upcoming projects focus on cyber security linked to IT; OT and IoT, and cloud security where development and evaluation of technical solutions is a common denominator. This recruitment specifically relates to security in cloud services and architecture for cyber-secure management systems.
The use of automation systems for control of production and distribution processes increases the vulnerability to the cyber threats that have become increasingly common in recent years, while cloud services are increasingly being used for these automation systems. In order to secure IT and OT environments to be maintained over time, there needs to be management systems for cyber security that cooperate with each other. In this work, we focus on experimental research concerning technical parts of cyber-secure management systems, such as network construction, network security and architecture for security, a so-called “blueprint”, which can be multiplied between different sites and organizations. We are looking for a PhD student who, through experimental research and development of prototypes, wants to contribute to future secure cloud service solutions for automation systems used for control in production and distribution processes as well as future architecture for cyber-secure management systems.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Student in Process Metallurgy
Pyrometallurgical extraction of metals generates slags, and for certain processes, the mass of slag is greater than that of the metal produced. Consequently, finding a suitable valorization route for slags is necessary for sustainable metal production from a resource efficiency standpoint. The current project aims to investigate the link between the pyrometallurgical process and the feasibility of utilizing slags as a supplementary cementitious material. By enabling this recycling route, a substantial reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from the cement industry can achieved each year. In this project, your main response parameter will be how the slag behaves as a supplementary cementitious material. The variables include slag composition, crystalline phases, cooling parameters during slag handling, and environmental aspects. You will synthesize samples in high-temperature experiments, test different granulation conditions, evaluate if crystalline phases can be activated mechanically, and utilize our advanced equipment to puzzle the observations into an understanding of the observed phenomena.
