Article about LTH being the first in Sweden with an artistic doctorate in architecture – on lth.se (in Swedish).

An artistic doctorate emphasizes design-driven processes and artistic exploration as methods of inquiry, bridging academic research and the professional practice of architecture. Research within this framework may follow a Research by Design approach, where designed artefacts generate new insights. Alternatively, the research may draw on the candidate’s own professional experiences, using long-term case studies, or contribute directly to the design process by developing new methods, tools, techniques, or reflecting critically on design methodologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position within the Infection Medicine Research Group

The research group led by Professor Johan Malmström develops techniques in quantitative and structural mass spectrometry to analyze protective antibody repertoires at high resolution. This detailed information on protective antibody responses is subsequently used to structurally characterize conserved epitopes and to facilitate the design of multivalent nanoparticle vaccines. The team was recently awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to determine the optimal combination of epitopes that elicits the highest level of protection.

Within the research group, we value a positive work environment built on respect and consideration in our interactions with one another. We continuously strive to create conditions that foster job satisfaction, development, and participation for all members of the team.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biology with a focus on Molecular Microbiology

Biology is a broad subject about all living things. It encompasses everything from processes at the molecular and cellular level to global processes at ecosystem level. The subject is divided into a range of sub-disciplines and specializations. The PhD program at the Department of Biology includes many of these specializations, from molecular biology to applied ecology, from viruses and individual cells to evolutionary biology and global biodiversity. Taking on research studies at the Department of Biology generally means focusing on a delimited part of the research area of biology and may include field studies, experiments, theoretical studies, or a combination of these.

Molecular microbiology is a field of science that focuses on understanding how microorganisms such as bacteria and their viruses function at a molecular level. Biofilms, the most common way bacteria grow in nature, are complex 3D communities. They can consist of one or more bacterial strains, all enclosed in a protective, self-produced extracellular matrix. The research project aims to understand how bacteria form biofilms and how these structures increase their resistance to adverse environmental conditions. In natural ecosystems, adaptation to stress is crucial for survival. Therefore, this project aims to map the molecular mechanisms behind biofilm formation and develop new methods to study them. The research will use both model systems and bacteria relevant to medicine and biotechnology.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in microbial resource limitation and element cycling in soils

This PhD position is in collaboration with the University of Amsterdam (UvA).

Soil microorganisms play a fundamental role in global biogeochemical cycles, shaping life on Earth and influencing climate change. Through the decomposition of organic matter, they regulate the balance between carbon stored in soils and carbon released into the atmosphere as CO2. Additionally, they drive nutrient cycling, determining the availability of essential elements for plants and crops, and also contributing to environmental challenges related to nutrient leaching.

Despite the critical role of soil microorganisms in element cycling, the extent to which it is constrained by the simultaneous limitation of multiple nutrients (co-limitation) remains poorly understood. This project will integrate laboratory experiments, field assessments, and modelling approaches to investigate microbial nutrient limitations across diverse ecosystems and climates. By improving our understanding of these processes, this research will contribute to the development of more sustainable land management strategies that enhance soil carbon storage, optimize nutrient availability, and mitigate negative environmental impacts.

The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
