(01) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in integrative physiology.
The project will focus on immunometabolic responses in skeletal muscle and their beneficial effects of exercise in insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes using different model systems. The doctoral project will be focused on small molecules and metabolites activating inflammation in skeletal muscle and regulating glucose and lipid homeostasis. Molecular mechanisms and effects of targets on whole-body energy homeostasis will be studied using in vitro and in vivo model systems. Identified targets will be validated in human blood and skeletal muscle biopsies.
The student is expected to fulfil the course requirements of the doctoral program, participate in regular group meetings, seminars, present at national/international meetings and take part in routine work within the research team.
Deadline of PhD Position: 23.May.2021
(02) PhD Position – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in Host-bacteria interactions and cancer.
The doctoral project aims at understanding the molecular mechanisms of cancer promotion by oncogenic bacteria both on the host and bacterial side, using Klebsiella pneumoniae as a model. The main goals of the projects are:
– To understand how bacterial Type VI secretion systems (T6SS) affect gut inflammation and host tumor suppressor pathways.
– To investigate how Klebsiella T6SS machinery participates in cancer initiation and progression in vivo, using mice models of colorectal cancer
The doctoral student will design and perform the lab experiments needed, including animal experiments, and will draft the manuscripts linked to the project. Additionally to the work directly related to the doctoral project, the student is expected to contribute to the lab routine duties of the group. Finally, the student will participates in group meetings and journal clubs, and will have the opportunity to attend international conferences on the topic.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in social gerontology.
The doctoral student will be working in the project “Aging in flux: how changing behaviors and lifestyles in the new cohorts are reshaping old age”. The overall aim of the project is to investigate behaviors and lifestyles in today’s older population, how they have changed over the life course, and if and how behaviors and lifestyles differ compared to earlier birth cohorts of older people.
The student will together with the supervisors, within the framework of this project, develop more specific research questions for the doctoral thesis. With the support of supervisors, the student will perform statistical analyses of existing longitudinal data and write up the results of each study for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
Deadline of PhD Position: 28.May.2021

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral postition at the Institute of Environmental Medicine.
This doctoral project will be focused on development of a mechanism-based approach for identifying and assessing the toxicity of endocrine disrupting chemicals that is applicable in the regulatory setting. The project will be centered around applying Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) methodology to organize, integrate and interpret different types of toxicity data (in silico, in vitro, in vivo and human) and draw conclusions about endocrine disrupting properties of chemicals. The project builds on several on-going projects and will make use of phenotypic and molecular effect data, such as histopathological and -omics data, generated in these projects. A significant part of the project will also be to identify and integrate relevant data from the scientific literature and databases.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website
The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.
The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.
The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.
The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre. While most of the medical programs are taught in Swedish, the bulk of the PhD projects are conducted in English. The institute’s name is a reference to the Caroleans.
