PhD position summary/title: PhD Position – Metastasis Biology Group
Dr. Magdalena Sznurkowska seeks a motivated PhD student with a strong interest in understanding the drivers of cancer spread. We focus on characterising the dynamic behaviour of tumour cells within distinct metastatic niches. Building on our experience in cell-fate tracking tracking and studying various stages of the metastatic cascade, we set out to follow tumour cell-niche interactions to reveal how distant sites shape cancer progression-and where we can intervene. This research is supported by the ERC Starting Grant.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Protein Structural Biology and Biophysics
Proteins must fold correctly to function, and this process is tightly regulated by a network of chaperone proteins. At the heart of this network is Hsp90, a molecular chaperone essential for the folding and maturation of at least 20% of all cellular proteins. Hsp90’s malfunction is implicated in cancer, neurodegenerative, and metabolic diseases. Despite its importance, the precise molecular mechanisms by which Hsp90 recognizes, processes, and releases its client proteins remain elusive due to the complex and dynamic nature of these processes.
This doctoral project aims to unravel these mechanisms by combining two cutting-edge techniques:

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Epidemiology/Public Health/Biostatistics with Interest in Ionizing Radiation and Health (100%)
The aim of this PhD project is to achieve a full assessment of the health risk including the uncertainty in relation to ionizing radiation exposure in a Swiss context. The proposed research will directly support the mission of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) to effectively monitor the safety reporting process, contributing to radiation protection advancement and enhancing the scientific basis for radiation-related health risk assessment and communication. The position is particularly well suited for a biostatistician with interest in epidemiology or vice versa for an epidemiologist with strong interest & experience in complex data analysis.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Quantum Sensing at Milli-Kelvin Temperatures
The Basel Quantum Sensing group at the Department of Physics, University of Basel, is offering a fully funded PhD position in the field of quantum sensing and scanning probe microscopy. Our research focuses on using single electron spins in diamond as sensors to explore magnetic phenomena at the nanoscale.
This doctoral project will center around the development and application of scanning magnetometry at ultra-low temperatures (down to 100 mK). Using Nitrogen Vacancy (NV) and Silicon Vacancy (SiV) centers in diamond, the project aims to probe magnetic properties of low-dimensional quantum materials and develop advanced sensing methods for future quantum technologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Quantum Materials Research and Instrumentation
Stacking and twisting atomically thin materials offers unprecedented control over their nanoscale magnetic, electronic, and optical properties. In this project, we will develop a novel instrument for in-situ assembly of 2D heterostructures, opening new possibilities to study strongly correlated electronic phases and magnetic order. The tool will integrate transport, optical spectroscopy, and quantum sensing techniques to probe these emergent states. The successful candidate will join a small, collaborative team and be involved in all stages of the research cycle:
- design and operation of scanning probe instrumentation
- fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures
- transport, optical spectroscopy, and quantum sensing experiments
- data analysis, modeling, and scientific communication
