(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title:  Postdoctoral Scholar in Epidemiology and Data Science in Kidney Health

The Alberta Kidney Disease Network (AKDN) and the University of Calgary are accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in Kidney Health Epidemiology and Data Science, to be based in Calgary, Alberta. The AKDN is a collaborative network of researchers located in the cities of Calgary and Edmonton in Alberta, Canada. AKDN trainees and junior faculty have previously published papers as first authors in a variety of prestigious journals including the Lancet, BMJ, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine, JASN, and Kidney International (for more information visit https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/research/akdn ).

This Postdoctoral Scholarship will engage in high-impact research aimed at: (1) examining the burden, management, and outcomes of chronic kidney disease to inform care delivery and health policy, and (2) developing and testing risk prediction tools (including machine learning and statistical learning) for kidney disease, using several existing databases, including a provincial repository of administrative, clinical, and laboratory data. Candidates will have the opportunity for first-hand experience with research initiatives directly related to the key focus areas.

The postdoctoral scholar will work under the supervision of Dr. Ping Liu, Epidemiologist in the Department of Medicine and adjunct assistant professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences, and Dr. Pietro Ravani, Professor of Medicine in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences.

We offer close mentorship, opportunities to contribute to a wide variety of research projects in chronic kidney disease, and a collegial and supportive working environment. The expectation is for recruited Scholar to apply for external fellowship funding support at the university, provincial and national level.

(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar, Masculinities Studies in Education

The Werklund School is a leader in teacher education. Ranked in the top five of Canada’s Education programs (2021), the Werklund School prides itself on providing teacher candidates with a balance of both theoretical and practical understanding of what it means to teach critically and thoughtfully for the youth of
the future. 

The successful candidate will have expertise in masculinities studies in education, gender, sociology of education, intersecting with qualitative and/or quantitative research methodologies, teacher education, practitioner-oriented research, and scholarship.

This position will work closely in collaboration with Dr. Michael Kehler, Werklund Research Professor of Masculinities Studies and provides an opportunity to develop the current research agenda within Masculinities Studies in Education. Research, current and ongoing, addresses areas intersecting masculinities and gender more broadly with specific lines of inquiry into: body image, adolescent masculinities, homophobia, sport, physical health education, and allyship. This is not an exhaustive list and is open to further areas of inquiry that build on already established research. In addition to building a clear research agenda, the candidate will work closely with Dr. Kehler to develop and submit collaborative research grants at both the provincial and national level. With a focus on research development, publications and scholarship, the successful candidate will have demonstrated a strong emerging research record and moreover, demonstrate excellent initiative in both analytical, organizational, and writing abilities. 

In addition to scholarly writing the position lends itself to considerable knowledge mobilization in both the academic and more general public arenas. Under the guidance of Dr. Kehler, the candidate will participate in collaborative efforts to develop, create, and mobilize research in accessible ways.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Clinical Research Fellowship, Pediatric Emergency Medicine

This fellowship is supported by a One Child Every Child (OCEC) Clinical Transformative Excellence Award. One Child Every Child is a Canada-first research and translation initiative funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, with a vision for all Canadian children to be the healthiest, most empowered and thriving in the world. Led by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Research Institute at the University of Calgary, One Child Every Child brings together Indigenous partners, Canada’s child health research institutes, equity-deserving communities, local and national partners as well as global collaborators to dramatically improve the lives of children across Canada and beyond.

The successful candidate would become an integral member of the Pediatric Emergency Research Team (PERT – https://cumming.ucalgary.ca/research/pediatric-emergency-research-team ). The PERT team includes 9 physician principal investigators who have unique areas of focus and methodologic expertise. The team is well resourced with 4 research nurses, 21 research assistants, and a 50-member volunteer research program. The team supports researchers from all sections across ACH and ACHRI, enabling them to recruit patients in the ED and numerous other clinics. The team is recognized as the preeminent program in the country and is a leader in the Pediatric Emergency Research Canada (PERC) network (https://perc-canada.ca/
enabling ACH to both lead and participate in national research initiatives.

The team includes Dr. Stephen Freedman, the ACHF Professor in Child Health and Wellness who brings expertise to the team as the Associate Dean, Clinical Trials for Cumming School of Medicine. He is the past-Chair of PERC and a member of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. He is supported by Dr. Graham Thompson, Program Director, Care Transformation for Children who has expertise in sepsis, and Dr. Mohamed Eltorki, an early career researcher with expertise in pain trials. Other PERT members have expertise in quality improvement, education research, health service research, the patient experience; and eSimulation. The collective expertise and interests of this group enable trainees to embark and excel in the conduct of research 
across methodologies and topics.

The overall aim of this fellowship is to prepare Pediatric Emergency Physicians for an academic career as a clinician researcher with an emphasis on fostering a new generation of transdisciplinary child health and wellness researchers. 

Clinical research fellows recruited through the Clinical Transformative Excellence Awards stream should be physicians who have completed fellowship and are interested in pursuing a career as clinical researchers. Support will be provided to pursue advanced training in biostatistics and epidemiology.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar in Preventive Health Interventions and Data Science on Cancer and Chronic Disease

The University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in Preventive Health Interventions and Data Science on Cancer and Chronic Disease, to be based in Calgary, Alberta. Candidates will have the opportunity for first-hand experience with research initiatives directly related to the key focus areas. The Successful candidate will support The Integrating Prevention into Connect Care for Health (IPiC-Health) research project, which aims to integrate Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral (SBIR) within Connect Care-facilitated clinical workflows in ambulatory and inpatient settings, to identify and address tobacco use, alcohol use, and physical inactivity and to demonstrate the feasibility, acceptability and impact of SBIR. Additionally, the candidate will contribute to other health care intervention and data science projects pertaining to cancer and chronic diseases in relation to the IPiC-Health initiative.

The postdoctoral scholar will work under the co-supervision of Dr. Kamala Adhikari Dahal and Dr. Gary Teare. Drs. Adhikari and Teare are epidemiologists and population health services researchers by background. They are Senior Scientist and Scientific Director, respectively, in the Cancer Prevention and Screening Innovation team (within the Public Health Evidence and Innovation Division of Provincial Population and Public Health, Alberta Health Services). They are also both Adjunct Assistant Professors in the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholarship – Metabolic Physiology

The Shearer lab at the University of Calgary is seeking candidates for a Postdoctoral Scholar position. Driven by a mission to ¿leverage metabolic insights to predict, prevent, and treat chronic diseases,¿ this research is at the forefront of uncovering the links between lifestyle, nutrition and disease risk. The successful candidate will work on a project that aims to understand the role of mitochondria and gut microbiota in health and disease. Experimental approaches include human cohorts, rodent models, microbiota sequencing and bioinformatics. Experience in gut microbiota analysis (16S, shotgun sequencing) and interpretation is essential. Likewise, prior experience working with mitochondrial respiration is an asset. Candidates will be expected to apply for external and internal fellowships and have a strong desire to establish an independent career in science. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment and have access to career development and training opportunities through core facilities and research institutes at the Cumming School of Medicine (Libin Cardiovascular Institute and Alberta Children¿s Hospital Research Institute). The research program of the Shearer lab is funded by CIHR, NSERC and industry.

(06) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar Position in Computational Condensed Matter Physics and Nanoscience

The postdoctoral scholar will be part of the Complex Nano Materials Group (CNMG), led by Primary Investigator Dr. Claudia G. Rocha, a research and development team that uses a broad toolkit of computational methods and high-performance computing (HPC) to investigate non-conventional nanomaterials engineered for specific technological applications: (i) neuromorphic (brain-like) systems, (ii) transparent conducting films, and (iii) molecular quantum sensors. The work will focus on building descriptive and predictive models to infer the physical responses of nanomaterials-based sensors at realistic environmental conditions. Emphasis is on implementing first principles and/or machine-learning (ML) methods, coupled with static and/or nonequilibrium transport theories, for accurate prediction and detection of chemical impurities interacting with low-dimensional materials.

The successful applicant will be based at the University of Calgary and will join an interdisciplinary and collaborative team with supporting research funding from NSERC and Alberta Innovates. The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewable for a second year, contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.

(08) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Scholar, Medical Genetics/Genomics/C. elegans

The Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar focused on high throughput identification of genetic modifiers, genetic interactions, using a model organism, Caenorhabditis elegans.

The available position is part of the multidisciplinary research program in the Tarailo-Graovac group which combines human and model organism (Caenorhabditis elegans) genomics and traditional molecular genetics approaches to understand genetic modifiers of rare human disease with focus on diseases related to centriole biogenesis deficiencies. We also study diseases related to deficiencies in mRNA biogenesis. We utilize high throughput genetic screens, whole genome sequencing, transcriptome sequencing and CRISPR/Cas9 knock-out and knock-in methods to better understand human disease.

We are looking for a creative and highly motivated postdoctoral fellow with strong interest in genetic interactions, human disease, penetrance/expressivity, phenotype-genotype correlations and deeper understanding of the mechanisms associated with proper centriole function or mechanisms related to proper mRNA biogenesis. The ideal candidate will have expertise in C. elegans molecular techniques and a passion for research.
