Are you passionate about plant–microbe interactions and eager to push the frontiers of biodiversity and disease ecology? We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our international team on the prestigious ERC Advanced Grant project DIGDEEP. This project investigates how plant diversity shapes the spread and impact of soil-borne diseases, aiming to unravel the mechanisms behind diversity–disease relationships in grassland ecosystems.

As a postdoc in DIGDEEP, you will take the lead on the fungal side of the project, designing and carrying out cutting-edge experiments to explore the complex interplay between plant root systems, pathogenic fungi, and beneficial symbionts. This is an exciting opportunity to combine controlled experiments with molecular tools to address fundamental questions in ecology with real-world relevance for sustainable ecosystems.

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post doc: Soil Health awareness and sustainability education and learning

We are looking for an enthusiastic Post-Doc candidate (or a candidate at the very end of the PhD trajectory) that will work on soil heath literacy and awareness, and help advancing environmental and sustainability education and learning. The selected candidate will work within the context of the LOESS (Literacy boost through an operational educational ecosystem of societal actors on soil health) project, a large EU Horizon project involving a network of over 20 core European partners.

The candidate will contribute to the project’s aim of boosting soil health literacy and awareness in both academia and society, and advancing socio-ecological sustainability. Within this aim, the candidate will be responsible for reviewing the current state of knowledge in this field, as well as creating, designing, coordinating, facilitating, and evaluating creative learning activities and events to enhance soil health literacy and awareness among diverse audiences, including academic targets (e.g. scientists, students) and non-academic targets (e.g. children, policymakers, general public).

This large EU project is part of the EU mission ‘A soil deal for Europe’. It embraces a Community Engaged Research and Learning approach as practiced for example through Living Labs and Science Shops. It brings together science and society, it values creative methods unifying science and arts, and it includes and connects formal learning in schools and universities, with knowledge in society and place-based learning through for example environmental conservation groups, urban food initiatives associations, city greening initiatives and social movements.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc socio-environmental data integration for spatiotemporal analyses of complex land systems

Are you motivated by the critical yet complex challenge of developing a spatiotemporal data integration framework to support human action-taking in complex land systems? If yes, this postdoc position at Wageningen University is just right for you!

The Geo-information Science team within the Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing is an interdisciplinary research group focused on integrated approaches to geospatial systems analysis. Our work applies a complex adaptive systems approach that explicitly emphasizes behavioural models of human action-taking and decision-making. Relying on geo-information science as the foundation of our research endeavours, we employ participatory methods and integrate qualitative and quantitative information to analyse the dynamic interactions within complex land systems. The resulting knowledge informs the development of conceptual and simulation models to help further our understanding of land use and land cover changes in space and time. Our research centres on integrating local perspectives with regional and global contexts to gain a deeper understanding of human-environment interactions.
Understanding and shaping land systems is a challenging undertaking. Land systems emerge from complex interactions among human behaviour, environmental processes, and socio-economic drivers, all of which vary across spatial and temporal dimensions. Bringing together diverse data, information, and knowledge—collected from survey data, narrative accounts, and participatory insights to sensor measurements and high-resolution geospatial data—is an essential prerequisite for studying these complex interactions. Varying disciplinary perspectives, data formats, and spatiotemporal resolutions create significant challenges for data integration.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc: New perspectives on the water cycle

We are currently looking for a highly motivated, recently graduated PhD to join our team (one year with the intention for extension to up to three years, full time, fully funded) at the Hydrology and Environmental Hydraulics Group (in collaboration with the Water Resources Management and Earth System Change groups) at Wageningen University. The position is based within the Sector-plan project “New perspectives on the Water Cycle” to develop novel methods for understanding changes in the water cycle (incl. the modeling of hydrological extremes, adaption strategies etc.) and their related uncertainties, and to quantify their consequences for different groups in society in terms of water security, water quality, water justice and food security as well as their relation to decision-making.

As a postdoctoral researcher you will develop a case study on the above-mentioned topic under the supervision the three senior researchers from the chair groups. Together you will select a representative area (e.g. a delta region) to explore and demonstrate possible improvements based on a proposed approach. This will serve as starting point for a joint proposal of the chair groups under your coordination. You will obtain the opportunity to develop own research proposals and contribute to the ongoing work in the chair groups. A special focus will be put on the transfer of model knowledge to practice, i.e. the improvement of communication with decision-makers and the investigation of the impact of model choices. For this purpose, the work will go beyond traditional rainfall-runoff analyses. Special attention will be paid to uncertainty analyses the role of data and model choices and modeling in decision-making.
You will coordinate the joint work between the three chair groups in this project and investigate new paths of collaboration.
