PhD position summary/title: ONE OR MORE PHD STIPENDS IN SIGNAL PROCESSING ENABLED CHANNEL CHARATERIZATION AND ANTENNA TESTING FOR EMERGING 5G AND BEYOND WIRELESS SYSTEMS

A raft of advanced wireless technologies is increasingly emerging in the arena of modern 5G and 5G beyond wireless communication systems design. This includes, among other technologies, the utilization of massive multiple-input multiple-output(MIMO) systems with analog, hybrid and digital structures, ultra-wide system bandwidth, reconfigurable intelligent surface(RIS) and millimeter-wave(mmWave) and sub-THz frequency technologies, and machine learning technologies etc. Radio channel charaterization is essential for design and development of wireless communication system. Antenna testing is required to ensure that the designed radio system can meet the performance specification. Even though there are already many pioneering works on theoretical and measurement-based works related to radio channel charaterization and antenna testing, many challenges are still present due to many advancement in radio technologies. The successful PhD candiates will work on one or more of the following research directions 1) radio propagation research for massive MIMO, sub-THz, RIS-enabled wireless systems 2) signal processing enabled advanced measurement and charaterization of massive MIMO, RIS, millimeter-wave antenna array 3) over-the-air testing of advanced radio systems. The research group is recognized internationally as a strong research group in radio propagation and antenna measurements. The group also pioneered over-the-air antenna testing for single-antenna handsets, which later became an international standard, and has also strongly influenced later testing of multi-antenna devices in 4G and 5G radios. The group is well known for its strong relationship with industry and experimentally based research, which is enabled by world top-notch laboratory facilities.

PhD position summary/title: PHD SCHOLARSHIP IN SOCIAL WORKERS’ ASSESSMENT OF RISKS OF HOMELESSNESS

The PhD scholarship is part of the project‘Exploring homelessness among care leavers(HACL): Addressing challenges and finding potentials’ which is funded by NordForsk. Young people, who have been in out-of-home care during their upbringing are significantly over-represented among homeless young people. Thus, the HACL project aims at addressing the challenge of homelessness among young care leavers(age 18-24) from a life course and a qualitative curiosity-driven perspective. The project is based on a Nordic collaboration between Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, and Denmark, with the project leader, associate professor Anne-Kirstine Mølholt, being based at Aalborg University. Anne-Kirstine Mølholt will be supervisor and professor Veronika Paulsen from NTNU in Trondheim, Norge, will be co-supervisor. The project consists of four work packages(WPs). WP 1 is a systematic review of research on experiences of homelessness among young care leavers. WP 2 explores the experiences of care leavers who are homeless or in the risk of homelessness. WP 3 explores social policy and initiatives across the included countries. WP 4 explores how social workers within child welfare services assess risk and needs in relation to homelessness when young people leave care.

PhD position summary/title: PH.D.

PhD position summary/title: ONE OR MORE PHD STIPENDS IN 6G RADIO ENABLERS FOR HETEROGENEOUS DISRUPTIVE SERVICES

Wireless communications have become more and more pervasive in the last decade, and the trend is expected to continue in the coming years with the introduction of the 6th Generation(6G) radio access technology. 6G will enable disruptive applications and services whose requirements in terms of data rate, or latency and reliability, are significantly beyond what supported by current radio technologies, such as immersive extended reality, holographic communication, fast closed loop control for industrial automation or life-critical services. Also, services with very different requirements may need to be coexist in the same radio cell; an example being wireless controlled robotic-assisted surgery where high data rate video feeds must co-exist with low data rate deterministic communication cycles for robot control, or low delay haptic feedback. The complexity and the heterogeneity of scenarios, applications and requirements to be supported by a 6G system calls for disruptive enhancements.

PhD position summary/title: PHD POSITION IN CIRCULAR PLASTICS VALUE STREAM MANAGEMENT

The PhD position will be integrated in ongoing research projects on the circular plastics economy, with a particular focus on the management and operationalization of the circular plastics value stream in manufacturing organizations. The focus will be on concrete industrial challenges in managing the transition from linear material streams to circular ones, for example related to supply or resource management, production management, or new collaboration models to enable a circular plastics business model. In this context, the candidate is expected to perform fundamental and applied research on the nature of specific challenges of a circular plastics value stream for manufacturing firms, and the development of adequate strategies to address these challenges in context. The transition from established linear material streams to circular plastic streams requires fundamental changes to organizational structures, processes, and business models. These changes, however, are contingent on numerous contextual factors, such as industry, product type, functionality of plastic in the product and so forth.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN DYNAMIC DECISION-MAKING FOR AUTONOMOUS VEHICLE-BASED SYSTEMS UNDER UNCERTAINTY

The need for deploying autonomous vehicles in various service areas is increasing due to their performance advantages over traditional means of service delivery. Following the need, the technologies relevant to autonomous vehicle deployment have been advanced, improving the feasibility of implementing autonomous vehicle-based service systems. However, the current level of implementation and demonstrated performance of autonomous vehicle-based service systems is lower than what the technologies can promise, primarily due to a lack of solutions to address concerns about reliability and safety of the systems especially under a high level of uncertainties in their operational environments and interactions between vehicles. The PhD position focuses on addressing challenges in the current and future implementation of autonomous vehicle-based systems through research on operational decision-making problems in various autonomous vehicle-based service systems. In particular, the decision-making problems with uncertainties in operational environments and highly coupled multi-vehicle operations are of key research interests of the position. The position involves developing solution algorithms and systems to tackle these decision-making problems to obtain robust, flexible, and adaptable decisions to the problems and this requires knowledge from multiple research domains including optimization, scheduling, simulation, statistical analysis, and control.
