PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student

This PhD project will develop and implement traffic flow models and simulations for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers of motorized modes, particularly in a shared space context but also for interactions in a general traffic context with dedicated traffic spaces such as pedestrians crossing streets or cyclists overtaking each other on bicycle lanes. Each traffic participant has a destination which will lead to some participants moving in the same direction (possibly forming spontaneous “lanes”), crossing, and opposite flows. For single-lane vehicular traffic, the model should revert to a car-following model. In cooperation with the supervisor Dr. Treiber, the existing “Intelligent Agent Model” (IAM) for directional disordered traffic flow will be generalized to meet the above objectives (working name IAM2d). The main task is to simulate and visualize the IAM2d in a suitable simulation environment, preferably Python, and to calibrate and validate it on naturalistic and experimental data. Ultimately, the IAM2d will be evaluated in various low-level transport scenarios such as intersections or shared spaces to to support sustainable mobility planning within the AgiMo digital twin framework. The project will actively collaborate with other AgiMo subprojects.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student 

The Research Training Group RTG 3120 offers several positions starting April 1, 2026, subject to the availability of resources, across 12 collaborative thesis projects covering a wide range of approaches — from theoretical physics, to experimental biophysics and biochemistry, and, to cell and molecular biology involving data science. A position comprises 65-75 % of the fulltime weekly hours and is limited until March 31, 2030. The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). The positions offer the chance to obtain further academic qualification (usually PhD).

PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student 

At the Chair of ‘Accelerator Mass Spectrometry and Isotope Research’ (AMS) a state-of-the-art AMS system (HAMSTER) with the highest sensitivity is being set-up in collaboration with the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR). We aim to significantly improve measurement efficiency and accuracy in AMS and in SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry) measurements. For this we pursue a novel approach to improve sensitivity by deceleration of negative ions in an ion cooler, where the rare isotope beam is cleaned from interferences by means of chemical reactions, collisions, and interactions with photons from a laser, before the particles are injected into a particle accelerator.

PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student

The Schirmeier lab is a small multicultural research group with PhD students and postdocs of different nationalities. Thus, the group’s communication is in English. We aim to analyze the metabolic homeostasis of the central nervous system. Using Drosophila, we study how flexible neural metabolism is and how it adapts to suboptimal conditions, such as malnutrition. Adaptations to nutrient uptake and transport, changes in glia-neuron metabolic interactions, and the underlying regulatory mechanisms are studied. A greater understanding of the metabolic plasticity of the nervous system will lay the basis for better understanding for e. g. neurodegenerative diseases.

PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student

You will work on the scientific research project “Advancing the understanding of glacial isostatic adjustment in Antarctica” (ANT-GIA) as part of the German Research Foundation’s priority programme “Antarctic Research”. The research project will be realised together with the GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences (Potsdam). Thus, you will closely cooperate with the PhD student at GFZ in order to link the interpretation of geodetic GNSS measurements with the modelling of glacial-isostatic adjustment (GIA). You will focus your work on the analysis and interpretation of the GNSS observations as well as on the application of geological and glacial-geomorphological findings for the reconstruction of ice-load history in Antarctic regions. Participation in the priority programme enables you to cooperate closely with further national and international partners. The main goal of the project is to significantly improve the understanding of GIA-driven processes and, hence, the GIA modelling in Antarctica.

PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student

You will work on the research project “Resolving processes of Antarctic Ice Sheet change through innovations in satellite altimetry” (RAISA) as part of the German Research Foundation’s priority programme “Antarctic Research”. You will collaborate with national and international partners, including the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. The tasks include:

  • scientific advancing methods of satellite altimetry analysis over the Antarctic Ice Sheet
  • analysis of measured surface elevation changes in conjunction with results from numerical modelling of surface mass balance, firn compaction and ice flow dynamics
  • identifying and quantifying processes of ice sheet change and ice mass balances
  • developing stochastic uncertainty characterisations for mass balance estimates from satellite altimetry
  • applying the results in comparative studies and combination studies with complementary methods such as satellite gravimetry
  • presentation and publication of the results

PhD position summary/title: Research Associate / PhD Student

The position is part of a DFG funded project “Decoupling above- from belowground litter decomposition and impacts on stabilization of soil organic matter with increasing aridity”. Drylands cover large areas of the land surface and may continue to expand in the future due to climate change. Even though dryland soils have low organic carbon (OC) concentrations, they store a significant fraction of global soil OC stocks. However, predicting effects of increasing aridity on soil OC stocks is not yet possible because above- and belowground processes of litter decomposition and soil organic matter (SOM) stabilization are differently affected by aridity. Therefore, the project focuses on the differential response of above- and belowground litter decomposition to increasing aridity and to elucidate the consequences for SOM stabilization. We will take advantage of a unique gradient in precipitation found on common parent material in Spain. We will study above- and belowground litter decomposition and SOM stabilization by applying 13C-labelled litter (shoots and roots) of an annual herbaceous plant in the field along the aridity gradient. The use of stable isotopes allows us to monitor litter decomposition and follow SOM formation under conditions as natural as possible along the gradient. We will measure 13CO2 fluxes in the field and combine these data with the incorporation of the 13C tracer into different SOM fractions. Experiments in the laboratory complement the field approach.
