(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Medical Science

Your work will entail the investigation of how Wnt signaling, a cell-to-cell communication pathway conserved across the animal kingdom, acts as master regulator of cell fate. While the mechanisms of canonical Wnt pathway have been extensively studied, it is yet not understood how nuclear protein β-catenin can drive the wide arrays of transcriptional responses depending on the context or developmental stage. You will investigate how the activation of Wnt signaling leads to promiscuous protein-protein interactions that, in a complex but deterministic manner, steer genomic function to regulate and fine-tune cell fate.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Deadline : January 2nd, 2024.

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Machine Learning

The research focus for the advertised position is machine learning for spatio-temporal modeling, prediction, and reasoning. The project involves the development of novel methods for combining deep-learning-based predictive models (for instance based on graph neural networks, transformers and neural operators) with probabilistic models for representing and reasoning about uncertainties in the models and their predictions (for instance by using latent variables, deep generative models, and ensemble predictions). The project involves both fundamental research on new machine learning models and computational algorithms, as well as applied research to demonstrate the usefulness of the new methods. For the latter, particular emphasis will be put on problems related to weather forecasting and climate science. Examples of this include predicting the risk of extreme weather events, combining predictive models with remotely observed data (e.g. hyperspectral images from satellites), and developing space-time continuous machine learning models. The PhD project will be carried out in collaboration with the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). Machine learning has made a significant impact on applications related to climate and weather over the past few years and the advertised PhD project will contribute to this development.

Deadline : January 14, 2024

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Scientific data analysis and visualization

This position is part of the project “Scientific data analysis and visualization via topology guided feature extraction and comparison” funded by the Swedish Research Council. The goal of this project is to develop new methods for explorative visual analysis of large feature-rich datasets derived from simulations or experiments. In recent years, feature-based analysis methods rooted in the strong mathematical foundations of topological data analysis (TDA) techniques have shown a lot of promise for addressing this challenge. The first step in this process is feature extraction, wherein hidden substructures in the data are identified and extracted using multi-scale feature descriptors based on the potent data abstraction capabilities of TDA. However, the primary emphasis of this project lies in the subsequent step of this visual data analysis pipeline, namely feature comparison. This is an active area of current research with many open questions. Efficient feature comparison methods would enable various downstream analysis tasks such as data summarization, feature tracking, and ensemble analysis.

Your primary research task will be to develop new algorithms as well as implement practical efficient solutions for computation and comparison of features using TDA-based techniques. An equally important task will be the application of the developed techniques to real scientific data provided by our collaborators with expertise in theoretical chemistry and physics. We envision the novel data analysis and visualization techniques developed during this project will be particularly useful for gaining insight into complex multi-dimensional data generated through workflows rooted in quantum mechanics.

Deadline : 22nd of January 2024.
