PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher / Väitöskirjatutkija (Cellular and Molecular Biology)
The project investigates how evolutionary divergence between two closely related hare species (Lepus timidus and Lepus europaeus) leads to differences in cell cycle dynamics and regulation at both physiological and molecular levels. The work integrates core molecular and cell biology methods with advanced live-cell confocal imaging, single-cell ATAC-seq, and nascent RNA transcriptomics. Research is carried out in Tampere under the daily supervision of a postdoctoral researcher, in close collaboration with the Joensuu team.
The project aims to uncover mechanisms linking life history strategies to cell cycle regulation. In addition to its relevance for species conservation, the project is expected to provide insights relevant to cancer biology and cellular senescence.
Deadline : October 10th 2025

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher (integrated learning and control) / Väitöskirjatutkija (integroitu oppiminen ja ohjaus)
As ALCAN Research Group, we work on the safety and reliability of complex autonomous systems that interact directly with people. We invite applications for a fully funded Doctoral Researcher position to conduct research in our recently awarded 4-years project, Human Intention Aware Control Strategies for Autonomous Driving (HUMINAC). The project focuses on developing novel, human intention–aware control strategies at the intersection of machine learning, reinforcement learning, and optimal control. Our work aims to make a significant impact not only on autonomous driving but also across robotics and autonomous systems more broadly.
The direction of the research will be shaped by the project tasks. However, the research focus and responsibilities can be tailored to align with the candidate’s skills, experience, and interests. The position involves collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to advance current knowledge and technology in this field, publishing findings in reputable journals, presenting at international conferences, and may include a few months of mobility to a European partner for collaborative work during the research stages.

(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher (Cellular and Molecular Biology) / Väitöskirjatutkija (Solu- ja molekyylibiologia)
We are seeking a highly motivated Doctoral Researcher to join a project investigating metabolic adaptation in cell models from cold- and temperate-adapted species, with a particular focus on alternative mitochondrial electron transfer pathways.
The successful candidate will design and conduct experiments both independently and in collaboration with other team members. The work will combine molecular biology and cell culture techniques, including flow cytometry, imaging, high-resolution respirometry, and the analysis of metabolomics, lipidomics, and RNA-seq data.
The candidate is expected to analyze data, publish results in peer-reviewed journals, participate in conferences, workshops, and seminars, and contribute to teaching and mentoring activities.
The work will be supervised by Dr Sina Saari (TUNI) and conducted in collaboration with Dr Eric Dufour (TUNI) and Prof Jaakko Pohjoismäki at University of Eastern Finland.
In addition to the doctoral dissertation, the duties of a doctoral researcher may include participation in education or other faculty tasks that support your studies.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Researcher (Computational Biophysics) / Väitöskirjatutkija (Laskennallinen biofysiikka)
The group recently obtained proof-of-concept funding for the optimization of protein-based liquid foams using a combination of computational and experimental approaches. The multidisciplinary framework with national and international collaborators is used to build a molecular model for the organization of proteins at the air–liquid interface in the foam. Next, this knowledge is used to design point mutations which would alter the properties of the foam. These designed protein variants are then produced by the collaborating team at VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, followed by experimental validation of their performance.
Your tasks will involve performing and analyzing simulations, participating in manuscript preparation, and disseminating the findings at meetings and conferences. You might also contribute to the teaching activity of the unit. You will work together with a postdoctoral research fellow who is recruited to coordinate the project.
