PhD position summary/title: PhD Student position in Climate Epidemiology
The PhD student will conduct interdisciplinary and innovative research on the effects of droughts on human health, within the framework of the IGIA-SETH project (“unravelInG the ImpActs of droughtS on human hEalTH”), funded by the SNSF Ambizione program 2023. The aim of the PhD project is to advance knowledge of the role of droughts in the public health field and identify vulnerability patterns at global, regional and local scales, using new data sources and state-of-the-art methods in climate epidemiology. The PhD project will lay the foundation for groundbreaking research, providing valuable evidence to reduce the health burden and inequalities related to the effects of climate change.
Supervision and Research Environment:
The PhD project will be developed under the supervision of the senior researcher assistant and PI of the SNSf Ambizione Coral Salvador, and Prof. Ana M. Vicedo-Cabrera. The PhD candidate is expected to develop and apply advanced methodologies by combining methods in climate modeling, epidemiology, and other relevant fields to assess the effects of droughts across various geographical scales. This PhD project will complement the work of the Climate Epidemiology and Public Health team by addressing a relevant and neglected topic in climate epidemiology.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position at the Institute of Parasitology
We have identified key aspects of energy and nutrient acquisition in E. multilocularis. One of them is the threonine dehydrogenase (TDH)-dependent threonine-uptake, which is crucial for parasite growth and development, that represents a non-functional pathway in humans (Kaethner et al., 2025, Int J Parasitol Drugs Drug Resist). Therefore, for the proposed project, the candidate will validate EmTDH expression through transcriptomic, proteomic and enzymatic analyses in samples from infected humans and animals and assess the essential roles of this enzyme by RNAi. Specific TDH inhibitors will be identified by screening repurposed drugs on the recombinant E. multilocularis and mouse enzymes. We will evaluate the efficacy on E. multilocularis versus mammalian cells in vitro and in the AE mouse model, assessing functional effects on TDH activity and identifying other drug effects through identification via affinity chromatography and proteomics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position (100%) in philosophy of climate science
In current climate science, there is a strong push towards more detailed and powerful computational models to address the challenges posed by current climate change. However, are bigger models always better? Which epistemic purposes can be reached with higher resolution and new machine-learning methods, and which not? How can the scientific understanding of the climate system be deepened with computational models? How is it related to providing decision-relevant climate change information? Our research project takes current discussions in climate science about the future of the discipline as an opportunity to examine its epistemic foundations with a special focus on values

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position: Feline Dermatology / Feline Hypersensitivity Syndrome
A PhD student position is available at the University of Bern, Switzerland, to join the research group of Prof. Elisa Maina (Department of Clinical Veterinary Medicine, Division of Clinical Dermatology) in collaboration with the Division of Veterinary Anatomy.
The successful candidate will work on research projects within the field of feline dermatology, with a particular focus on feline hypersensitivity syndrome. This will involve both clinical case work and laboratory-based investigations, with the aim of improving the understanding, diagnosis, and management of pruritic skin diseases in cats.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Terahertz-Driven Ultrafast Dynamics of Quantum Materials
A PhD project is available in the Nonlinear Optics group at the Institute of Applied Science – University of Bern.
Our research uses ultrashort intense lasers and terahertz pulses to probe and control the properties of complex solids. We focus on the nonequilibrium dynamics of quantum materials-including systems that exhibit macroscopic quantum phenomena (e.g., high-temperature superconductivity). By driving materials far from equilibrium and tracking their response on femtosecond timescales, we access structural, spin, and electronic dynamics and uncover the underlying out-of-equilibrium physics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student – survey and analysis of China and/or Russia experts
The five year project “Through a Glass, Darkly: How to Study Authoritarian Regimes” is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and examines how foreign audiences learn about the inner workings of authoritarian regimes (specifically the People’s Republic of China and the Russian Federation), focusing on the role of country experts and their connections. Note that there is a 2nd position available in this project that focuses on using LLMs to extract political networks from unstructured text.

PhD position summary/title:
Doctoral candidate in the field of spectroscopic characterization of doped organic thin films in EU Training Network FADOS
The project focusses on the spectroscopic elucidation of transport properties in doped organic thin films. The main tools will include film preparation, optimization of doping protocols, electrical conductivity measurements, temperature-dependent terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, and time-resolved spectroscopy of photocatalytic doping processes. The work will be done in close collaboration with the other members of the FADOS network.
Objectives:
1) Understand how the intrinsic conductivity on the local scale translated to macroscopic conductivity, relating this to disorder and the presence of grain boundaries.
2) Understand the transport mechanism by combining temperature-dependent data, THz conductivity spectra and theoretical analysis.
3) Understand how the different oxidation states present in a film affect its conductivity.
4) Insight to the mechanism of photocatalytic doping with ultrafast time resolution.
The project will include three secondments:
1) Imperial College London, Prof. Jenny Nelson and Prof. Julie Euvrard (2 months): Time-of-flight and temperature-dependent Hall measurements for macroscopic transport.
2) University of Stuttgart, Prof. Sabine Ludwigs (2 months): Preparation of devices with morphology control.
3) FLUXIM, Switzerland, Dr. Davide Moia (2 months): Course drift-diffusion simulations of electronic and ionic transport
