PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Communication Science
This fully funded four-year PhD position is part of the NWO-M 2024 research project “Real Fake: How Highly Immersive Disinformation Affects What People Believe”. The project investigates how people respond to immersive disinformation: highly realistic, AI-generated content such as deepfakes and 360° virtual reality videos. By looking and feeling authentic, this kind of content can make people feel as they are truly witnessing an event. Whereas most disinformation research focuses on text, we assume that highly lifelike digital (mis)experiences of immersive disinformation can shape beliefs more powerfully by creating a sense of “being there”.

PhD position summary/title: PhD-position: Quantitative approach to Fin Ec Crime Prevention & Discrimination
The project: Financial institutions are obliged to perform tasks related to financial economic crime (FEC) such as anti-money laundering, sanctions evasion and terrorism financing. These are crucially important yet challenging tasks. First, they require considerable resources (e.g., costs, employees, IT infrastructure, specialized training). Second, they may require the use of quantitative models, data analysis, and algorithms, but these applications must also safeguard the data privacy and non-discrimination rights of their clients. This topic will become even more relevant in the current age with the dawn of AI.

PhD position summary/title: Three PhDs De-Escalating Aggressive Encounters Frontline Workers and Citizens
Your project will be a part of the ORC-NWA consortium project “De-escalating Aggressive Encounters between Frontline Workers and Citizens.” The aim is to understand the mechanisms that drive escalation and de-escalation of aggressive encounters between frontline workers and citizens. The project involves academic and societal partners working together. We are looking for three PhD’s for the project to analyze video recorded encounters between citizens and different types of frontline workers: PhD1 on law enforcement, PhD2 on public transport and PhD3 on service work. These multimethod projects involve participant observations, and both qualitative and quantitative analysis of video footage.
We are seeking candidates who are interested in learning or already have experiences with video analysis, have an affiliation with observational and statistical methods, and are passionate about working in an interdisciplinary team.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Public Administration & Digital Governance
Are you a public administration or management student interested in AI and/or value-based governance? Are you interested in doing research about the risks of AI use in public administration and how to manage conflicting public values? Please apply at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam VU!
As a PhD candidate (0.8-1.0 FTE) you are part of the NWO-funded project “AI4ALL: Value-aligned AI for Public Organizations”. You conduct research on the actual and intended use of AI in public organizations, researching the intended reasons and expected impact of AI in the public sector, and empirically measuring public values affected by the use of AI in public governance. More specifically, your research will focus on empirically measuring public values affected by AI use in public governance, examining which values are actually impacted and what citizens consider most important in terms of value trade-offs. PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Design Cultures
This PhD position is part of a larger interdisciplinary project exploring cultural drivers for the growth of waterproof outdoor clothing consumption in the context of an over-carbonised economy and changing human experiences of weather. We are seeking a candidate interested in questions of environmental sustainability with experience researching material cultures of clothing/textiles. The PhD role is to research the presence of high-performance waterproof textiles in everyday wardrobes, which involves ethnographic fieldwork on how consumer-users form relationships with clothing objects (WP2). Alongside writing their dissertation, the PhD student will be involved in the organisation of public-facing events including the materials workshop that forms part of the overall project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Philosophy
This PhD position will be embedded in the NWO-funded project TEND (Technological Niche Disruptions), which investigates the impact of new, disruptive technologies on both individuals and societies from an ecological perspective, adopting a niche construction framework.
The PhD project will focus on developing the foundational framework of the project, as well as one (or both) of two case studies. One case study concerns the disruption of epistemic spaces, with a focus on a historical comparison between the emergence of the printing press in the modern era and the recent advent of the Internet. The other case study concerns chatbots (like ChatGPT) and other similar AI architectures, focusing on how they challenge and disrupt the concepts of ‘communication’ and ‘authorship’. Both projects will be carried out in close collaboration with the project’s principal investigators, Prof. dr. Catarina Dutilh Novaes and dr. Guido Löhr. A short description of TEND is available on https://sites.google.com/view/tend-project/home, and a full description is available upon request.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Ultra-High Speed Computational Optical Coherence Tomography
You will join an ambitious research project at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), carried out in close collaboration with ARCNL. Our research focuses on computational imaging for biomedical applications. By combining advanced numerical methods with customized optical imaging systems, we aim to enhance resolution, boost imaging speed, reduce costs, and introduce innovative contrast mechanisms.
This project aims to push the boundaries of optical coherence tomography (OCT) by breaking current acquisition speed records by an order of magnitude. To achieve this, we will employ full-field swept-source OCT, combined with sparse sampling and compressive sensing.
As a PhD candidate, you will play a key role in the experimental realization, characterization, and application of this cutting-edge imaging approach. You will also collaborate closely with another PhD student at ARCNL, working on complementary aspects of the project.

About The Vrije University Amsterdam, Netherlands –Official Website
The Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is a public research university in Amsterdam, Netherlands, founded in 1880, and consistently ranks among the top 150 universities in the world by major ranking tables. The VU is one of two large, publicly funded research universities in the city, the other being the University of Amsterdam (UvA). The literal translation of the Dutch name Vrije Universiteit is “Free University”. “Free” refers to independence of the university from both the State and the Dutch Reformed Church. Both within and outside the university, the institution is commonly referred to as “the VU”. Although founded as a private institution, the VU has received government funding on a parity basis with public universities since 1970. The university is located on a compact urban campus in the southern Buitenveldert neighbourhood of Amsterdam and adjacent to the modern Zuidas business district.
In 2014, the VU had 23,656 registered students, most of whom were full-time students. That year, the university had 2,263 faculty members and researchers, and 1,410 administrative, clerical and technical employees, based on FTE units. The university’s annual endowment for 2014 was circa €480 million. About three quarters of this endowment is government funding; the remainder is made up of tuition fees, research grants, and private funding.
The official university seal is entitled The Virgin in the Garden. Personally chosen by Abraham Kuyper, the Reformed-Protestant leader and founder of the university, it depicts a virgin living in freedom in a garden while pointing towards God, referring to the Protestant Reformation in the Netherlands in the 16th and 17th century. In 1990, the university adopted the mythical griffin as its common emblem.
