(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate (Job Number: 24001468)

This project is a collaboration between Psychology and Computer Science. As Psychology PDRA, the successful applicant will be required to liaise with the Computing staff and VR developers in the project to build environments which allow you to rigorously and effectively test your hypotheses. Your responsibilities will be to design and run experiments using these environments and to write these up, in collaboration with a team of co-authors, for publication. Additionally you will be expected to disseminate findings at conferences, and engage in outreach and networking with families and the VR developer community. The project is therefore suited for a clear communicator who is excited about working as part of an interdisciplinary team, but who also has a solid experimental psychology training base. There is a technical aspect to the project so the person must have an aptitude for technical work. Since most experiments involve a child sample, the person must be also able to personally engage children and their families and collect high-quality data from children including as part of longitudinal studies. Likewise, the person must be able to independently liaise with school teachers and outreach contacts to arrange testing in schools.

This is a great opportunity to work as part of a friendly team on a cutting-edge project which has both a clear theoretical focus and an applied angle. The PDRA will have access to outstanding resources including equipment, dedicated technical support, a large developmental database and related resources, and travel funding for conferences and collaboration. You may have some support in collecting data but must be prepared to personally collect data.

Deadline : 07-Sep-2024,

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Organisational Behaviour and Leadership (Job Number: 24001299)

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to support a research project entitled “Sweating it out for a good purpose: Scaling up mass participation sports events in sustainable ways”. The project has two main goals. First, it aims to examine key antecedents of participation in running events, such as runners’ motivations, differences between younger and older runners, between junior employees and senior leaders as well as between men and women. It also aims to examine the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and career-related effects of physical activity at the workplace and beyond, such as its effects on wellbeing, leaders’ resilience, careers, and social judgements or biased evaluations of others. Second, this project also has a sustainability focus, and its findings aim to (1) encourage the building and nurturing of partnerships between organisations in support of sustainability aims, and (2) to prompt runners make specific changes in behaviours in order to achieve sustainability goals. We aim to understand the environmental impact of running events, capturing the complex interactions among the organising company, its partners, and runners, with the aim of improving sustainable practices. You will work alongside a local organisation that organizes mass running events to help answer these research questions and inspire and scale their activities. This will involve bringing your expertise into the role to help shape the underlying research agenda and how it translates into real world impact.

The successful applicant will work alongside the project PI, Dr Maria Kakarika, and the project partner as well as the rest of the academic project team. The role is funded by Durham University Business School’s Smart & Scale initiative which is an interdisciplinary impact-driven research programme in smart and scale-up activities, focusing on innovation and business development of SMEs in the North-East of England.

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Associate in Machine Learning (Job Number: 24001485)

The BioDiMoBot project will deliver a system for autonomous, long-term robotic assessments of aquatic biodiversity and ecology. This project will develop an innovative measurement system to monitor biodiversity and provide insight into the drivers of ecosystem degradation. Additionally, it will assess organismic and environmental stress levels by using novel biohybrid sensors. About Durham University, England – Official Website

Durham University is a collegiate public research university in Durham, England, founded by an Act of Parliament in 1832 and incorporated by royal charter in 1837. It was the first recognised university to open in England for more than 600 years, after Oxford and Cambridge, and is thus one of the institutions to be described as the third-oldest university in England. As a collegiate university its main functions are divided between the academic departments of the university and its 17 colleges. In general, the departments perform research and provide teaching to students, while the colleges are responsible for their domestic arrangements and welfare.

The university is a member of the Russell Group of British research universities after previously being a member of the 1994 Group. Durham is also affiliated with the regional N8 Research Partnership and international university groups including the Matariki Network of Universities and the Coimbra Group. The university estate includes 63 listed buildings, ranging from the 11th-century Durham Castle to a 1930s Art Deco chapel. The university also owns and manages the Durham World Heritage Site in partnership with Durham Cathedral. The university’s ownership of the World Heritage Site includes Durham Castle, Palace Green, and the surrounding buildings including the historic Cosin’s Library. It was Sunday Times University of the Year for 2005, and the Times and Sunday Times Sports University of the Year for 2015, and was awarded a Queen’s Anniversary Prize in 2018. Durham University Student Volunteering and Outreach was awarded the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service in 2020.

Among British universities, it had the sixth highest average UCAS Tariff for new entrants in 2018 and the third lowest proportion of state-school educated students starting courses in 2016, at 62.9 per cent (fifth lowest compared to its benchmark). The chancellor of the university is Sir Thomas Allen, who succeeded Bill Bryson in 2012. Current and emeritus academics include 14 Fellows of the Royal Society, 17 Fellows of the British Academy, 14 Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences, 5 Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 2 Fellows of the Royal Society of Arts and 2 Fellows of the Academy of Medical Sciences. Durham graduates have long used the Latin post-nominal letters Dunelm after their degree, from Dunelmensis (of, belonging to, or from Durham)
