(01) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: PostDoc to work on Solvent-based Processing and Lamination of Sustainable Polymers for Inert Filter Composites
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa’s around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.
In our research group, we transfer membrane and encapsulation strategies from academia to industry. Solution-based processes like electrospinning and microfluidic wet spinning produce membranes, fibers and particles for applications including tissue scaffolds, drug delivery and air filtration. Scalable post-processing technologies subsequently allow for the production of functional prototypes for industry partners.
This project is an Innosuisse collaboration with a Swiss polymer materials producer and combines electrospinning and crosslinking with scalable textile processing for sustainable filter composites.
Postdoc summary/title: Post-doc in the field of high through-put PVD process control and synthesis applied to compositional gradient thin film libraries
You will work on basic science topics as well as on applied research projects funded by InnoSuisse. Coating libraries will be synthesized using reactive and/or HiPIMS sputtering and microwave assisted deposition techniques. You will exploit various diagnosis tools that characterize the deposition environment, investigate their properties and microstructure of the deposited thin films by cutting edge analytical techniques, such as scanning/transmission electron microscopy, atom probe tomography or scanning probe microscopy.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher or Scientist in Externally Bonded CFRP Strengthening of Concrete with Flexible Adhesives
The position is hosted within the Innovative Concrete Structures Research Group at Empa, an interdisciplinary team specializing in structural engineering, advanced materials, and innovative concrete strengthening solutions. Our work combines experimental investigations, analytical modelling, and numerical simulations to develop and validate novel reinforcement systems. This position is part of an Innosuisse-funded collaborative project with industry partners, focusing on the development and performance assessment of externally bonded CFRP reinforcements using flexible adhesives.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral researcher with a background in Computational biology or Data Science
Empa’s Laboratory ‘Particles-Biology Interactions’ and its group ‘Multi-omics for healthcare materials’ are looking for a candidate for an interdisciplinary project on the development of new computational approaches for improving safety and sustainability of (nano)materials based on publicly available data and tools, including omics data, and integration of novel methods for replacing animal testing. The project involves collaborations with several leading European research groups and experts in the field. The Postdoctoral researcher will perform cutting edge research work, develop novel computational tools and integrate new strategies for the safe and sustainable use of chemicals and materials.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in ‘X-ray based multimodality development: semi-crystalline and amorphous materials for space applications’
The Center for X-ray Analytics develops X-ray methodologies for understanding materials structure in materials science. Our core activities is the development X-ray based methods focusing on the evaluation of the structure – property relationship in applications such as biomedicine and space.
In the frame of an ESA project interfacing research and industrial needs, we are looking for a postdoc holding a PhD in material science, physics or chemistry, with a clear link to X-ray based analytical methods, especially to X-ray diffraction and even more specifically to XRD-PDF (pair distribution function). The project is linked to crystalline and amorphous alloys, and in an industrial context to process design by establishing the structure-property relationship. We expect the candidate’s enthusiasm for X-ray based analytical methods and Space sciences!
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Techno-institutional Design of Community PV
The focus of this postdoctoral position lies in demonstrating the real-time optimization of community PV systems, e-mobility, and edge data center integration at the Swiss pilot site hosted at Empa’s NEST demonstrator. The role involves coordinating the deployment and validation of advanced planning and energy management solutions that enhance self-consumption by intelligently controlling PV systems, batteries, electric vehicle charging, heat pumps, and thermal storage. Beyond the technical implementation, the candidate will contribute to the development of regulatory frameworks, business models, and social analyses that enable broader adoption of community PV. This interdisciplinary position bridges engineering, policy, and user-centric perspectives, and includes stakeholder engagement through workshops and training activities. The candidate is expected to translate research ideas into practical solutions in close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team and external academic and industry partners. Responsibilities also include supporting master’s and PhD students, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and participating in international conferences.
Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc in laser process monitoring and ML/AI-based control
We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join an applied research project focused on the development of AI/ML-based methods for the automation of laser processing techniques. In close collaboration with our industrial partner, you will design and implement innovative architectures for real-time detection and control of laser processes.
This interdisciplinary role combines artificial intelligence and machine learning with the physics of laser–matter interaction. Your developments will be directly validated through multiple experimental runs on state-of-the-art laser processing equipment. You will work closely with experts in material science, numerical modelling and laser physics, enabling you to integrate diverse expertise into robust control frameworks. This collaboration provides a unique opportunity to work with rich datasets, advanced analytical tools, high-performance computing infrastructure, cutting-edge photonic sources, and modern industrial machinery. In this position, you will contribute to ongoing research projects, publish your findings in peer-reviewed journals, and present your work at national and international conferences.
